Engineered Industrial Coatings

PPI High Performance Aquazinc™ Coating

Water Soluble Aquazinc™ Coating Technology (Replacement for Zinc Plating)

Premium products Inc., USA has developed Aquazinc™ water based coating as an alternate
replacement for Zinc Plating for threaded hardware and metal parts in Automotive and
engineering construction and it offers direct cost saving by not using solvents compare to
other solvent based products.

Aquazinc™ Coating

The coating is single pack system which gives easy to use & suitable for various climates
and reduces costs of rejection by not having risk of jellifying process. The water based
Aquazinc™ coatings are normally non flammable, Easy water cleanup, Low Odor,
Environmental friendly and low Curing temperature compares to other products around 200
deg c. This coating has a ability to recoat and better adhesion with different substrate.

Environment Protection by Aquazinc™ Coating

There are no hazardous and declarable substances in Aquazinc™ coating, thus it is friendlier
with environment. The Polymet coatings are water based therefore I is low HAP (hazardous
Air Pollution), Low VOC (Volatile Organic Content). The coating meets ELV, WEE and
ROHS norm guidelines for not using hazardous and declarable substances like:

-Lead
-Mercury
-Cadmium
-Hexavalent chromium
-Polybrominated biphenyls (PBB)
-Polybrominated diphenly ether (PBDE)

Application for Aquazinc™ Coating

Aquazinc™ products can be applied with Non Electrolytically applied Dip Spin coating
techniques for mass produced hardware parts and by spray application with or without
electrostatic for larger metal parts.

Surface Preparation: Optimum effectiveness of high performance protective coatings is

highly dependent on the preparation of the surface prior to application of the coating
formulation. Superior results are achieved when the items to be coated are first degreased

(using, preferably, conventional alkaline degreasing - although solvent based processes can
also be used) and then blasted with an abrasive such as silica, steel grit, or alumina to
achieve a surface profile that provides optimum performance and adhesion. In general, the
best performance is achieved when the surface preparation is a ‘white metal blast.’

Oil Cleaning-Degreasing: Environmental friendly Alkaline or Solvent base oil cleaning is

recommended to use, It is applicable to all metal parts. Good oil cleaning is also enough as a
pre-treatment for some parts. No acid cleaning for parts having 32 HRC or higher hardness
and spring steel to avoid hydrogen embrittlement.

Phosphate (as for example, zinc phosphate or iron phosphate) is often used as a surface
preparation for coatings; it is inexpensive and relatively foolproof. The primary
disadvantage of phosphate coatings is that they are non-conductive. Nearly all high
performance protective coatings rely on sacrificial action to achieve a high level of
protection; the traditional view is that having a non-conductive intermediate coating
interferes with the efficacy of the coating; this view has disappeared somewhat over the past
decade or so.

Shot Blasting: For high strength steels (10.9 grade and above or hardness >32 HRC), Shot
blasting is preferred, since Phosphate treatment may lead to Hydrogen Embrittlement, so it
is not recommended for spring steel and high strength steel.

Dip spin coating process whereby product is placed in a mesh basket, submerged in
Polymet coating solution and spun to remove the excess coating. The temperature and
viscosity of the coating, immersion time, spin direction and velocities and the cure method
are among the variables that allow users to customize a process recipe and achieve precise,
highly repeatable results.

Spray coating process: The Polymet coatings can be applied by Spray application
techniques which are known in finishing industry. To have more efficiency and economical
coating results HVLP and other technological improved systems are more useful compare to
older equipments and application techniques.

Polymerisation Cycle: The coated parts need to cure at around 200 deg c for
polymerisation and cross linking of added polymers before the coating is functional. The
SST results and other chemical related properties vary if the baking cycle is not being
performed properly.

Main Characteristics of Aquazinc™ Coating

The first and important characteristic of Aquazinc™ coating is higher corrosion protection
in comparison with electrolytically deposited zinc or zinc alloys. With uniform application
of coating layer by advanced application techniques, depends up on pre-treatment and
geometry of component; over 240 hours SST can be achieved and the coating is suitable for
spring steel and high strength steel parts. Other properties are:

• Water soluble: Low VOC

• Sacrificial behavior
• Heat resistance 200 deg c
• Free from Hydrogen Embrittelment
• Protection of various corrosions
• Anti Freezing in cold climates
• High Chemical resistance
• Improved Wear resistance
• Colored sealer top coats for aesthetic and sorting
• Possible to adjust the required Co-efficient of friction
• No hydrogen Embrittelment stress cracking of high strength metal parts

Field of Application for Aquazinc™ coating

• Replacement or Alternate of Zinc Plating
