Technology-Based Sheltered Instruction: Making Meaningful Connections

creating connections to new information based on the students prior knowledge and experiences.
Technology-integrated Sheltered Instruction is an effective way to couple traditional direct instruction
with presentations, pictures, and videos.

Make It and Take It
A Makerspace is an area where students can come together to experience hands-on design and
creation. Most of the time the emphasis is on creation using technology, but not always. It is not
unusual to find real ""physical"" tools like wrenches or pliers in a makerspace. The basic idea is to
encourage students to think creatively and to offer them a space to tinker either individually or in a
collaborative group. Most importantly, students take the initiative to learn and to create a product
that genuinely engages them. Through trial and error, students may experience success or failure,
learning to problem-solve and collaborate with others along the way. This presentation will include a
slideshow of makerspace activities in the media center at Southwest Middle School. I will share tips
and suggestions for starting a makerspace in your library. How to encourage student participation
and ideas for funding your makerspace projects. I will also share some of my tips for managing
student use of the Makerspace area to include organizational strategies through my library website.
