Photography – Introduction to Creative Photography

with Susan Hill (6wks)


This is a project-based course designed to teach students how to use their
SLR camera creatively. Learn to use your SLR film or digital camera in
manual mode, composition techniques and understanding light. Students
create images in response to a given theme and are encouraged to use
photography as a medium for expressing and developing ideas. A field trip in
Fremantle is included and students are required to have their own SLR
camera. No previous necessary.

Tutor Biography: Susan Hill is a curator, practicing artist and lecturer. She
gained her BA in Visual Arts (photomedia) at Canberra School of Art,
Australia. After moving to England, Hill studied for a Post Graduate Certificate
in Education (P.G.C.E.) at the University of Greenwich before completing a
MA in Photographic Studies at the University of Westminster, U.K. Her
previous teaching experience includes positions at The University of
Sunderland, Chelsea College of Art & Design and Camberwell College, and
prior to returning to Perth she ran her own private courses in London.

Aims of the Course:

At the end of this project the student should:


• Have a practical knowledge of the operation of a traditional/ film or
digital SLR camera on the manual setting.
• Have a good understanding of the qualities of different types of film or
ISO settings.
• Have a basic understanding of visual awareness skills with regards to
photography via the exploration of a given theme.
• Have a basic awareness of composition and how it can be used to
control meaning within photographic images.
• Have a basic understanding of how to analyse the meaning and
messages conveyed within photographs.

Materials/equipment students will need to bring:

• A 35mm SLR manual camera (traditional or digital) and a tripod if


available.
• A hand held light metre if you have one.
• Photographic film if you are using a traditional camera.
• A notebook, pen and an A4 folder with sleeves to keep prints in.

NB - students will be required to get their photographs developed and printed


at a lab.
Materials/equipment to be supplied by tutor: Handouts and a light meter to
use within class.

REFUNDS POLICY FOR COURSES


Fees are paid in advance and your place is only confirmed by
payment. If you are unable to attend notice must be given five days
before the course commences to receive a credit note less a 20%
administration fee. If a class is cancelled by Fremantle Arts Centre
due to lack of participants we will refund your money in full.
