Some students have a background, identity, interest, or talent that is so meaningful they believe their
application would be incomplete without it. If this sounds like you, then please share your story.
Life had tried to make my dreams impossible, and it failed. Growing up was difficult for me. I had bad grades, and
my parents had given up on supporting my education. I fell victim to child abuse, and always went to school
knowing that my parents did not care about my school performance. Living in a ghetto and poor part of California
made racial profiling and stereotypes prevalent among the streets. I would always shock others because they
would think that all Asians were supposed to be smart. This stereotyping would affect me in school because I
would be constantly bullied which in turn affected my ability to think during class. Knowing that both no one at
home or at school cared about me, I began to push myself further academically. I would force myself to stay
during lunch to get extra help on assignments and I would get started on my homework early. And while all of this
is happening, I had one single drive that kept me going. And that was the fact that I wanted to better myself so that
I could one day prove to my parents that I am worth the time. Soon my grades were changing, I was getting A's
instead of D's and I knew if I kept this up, I can go far. Then bit by bit, my life started to fall apart again. Divorce
came, and I was abandoned by my father and sent to Washington to live with my mother and her parents.
Adjusting to life was hard because my grandfather hated Koreans. He treated my mother and me almost like
slaves, to just do whatever he needed done for free. Although all these hardships were blocking my life, my
constant drive to better myself was still there, and I kept striving to achieve good grades no matter what. But then
all in one day I lost everything. On September 2, 2014 one day before my junior year started, my first girlfriend left
me; I was kicked out of my grandparents' house because my grandfather hated Koreans, and I was forced to live
in various shelters with strict schedules. School at this point was done for me, I could not keep up with my AP
loaded schedule and after the first semester I had received my first D grade. One reason why I had bad grades
was my shelter's strict schedule. In the shelter, I had to get situated and then do my chores every single day,
which lasted for 5 hours. This gave me only 1 hour to do homework. When asked to do homework in the night, I
was denied and in the end my grades plummeted. I had lost all hope, until I was given a house to live in. I knew
this was a once in a lifetime opportunity for me so I began to study the moment I was in the house. I knew my
grades were far from being saved but I had to try to see if I could do better next year. After being so lost for so
long, I had realized that all this negativity was good for me in the end. It broke me, molded me into a new form,
and remade me into the hardworking and determined man that I am now. I want to go to a 4 year university to fulfill
my dream of proving to my friends and mother that I'm not just some "smart" Asian, but instead determined and
different.
Additional Information
My family has had financial problems during my freshman year in highschool, and all the way up to my junior year,
where I became homeless and had to live in a shelter. My grade had significantly dropped due to not having
enough time to study in the shelter. But after getting a new apartment and less stress, my grades in my senior
year have gotten higher (4.0 GPA, for the first semester of senior year).
