Project Summary (less than 200
words)
May 2016
May 2017 Tentatively
The Project is concerned with GRID TIED MULTI-LEVEL INVERTER with Power Quality Analysis and
Monitoring. Power quality (PQ) regulation is a major issue in industrial and domestic power consumption.
Left unattended it will directly pollute entire power distribution system through Point of Common Coupling
(PCC). As of today, the industry cannot safely run the motive loads without PQ monitoring. For having
longer machine life, better machine performance and more profit in transmitting power, the maintenance
of PQ at international standard is necessary. The main objective of the project is to improve the quality
output voltage of the multilevel inverter. The project will have a Graphics Touch LCD with a user friendly
Graphical User Interface developed in it. That LCD will display the Grid parameter as well as will take
various commands to manually set the desired parameters by the means of touch. A five level improved
diode clamped Inverter with minimum Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) required by the WAPDA will be
developed for grid connectivity. An important aspect of this multilevel inverter design is that to generate
nearly sinusoidal output voltage waveform and to eliminate lower order harmonics. Multilevel Inverters not
only can generate the output voltages with very low distortion, but also can reduce the dv/dt stresses,
therefore electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) problems can be reduced. Besides this, the Power Quality
Monitoring part will play an important roll in the project. That will be accomplished using synchronization of
all the required parameters like phase sequence, frequency, voltage etc. The overall grid connectivity of
the Inverter will be automatically controlled by the National Instruments myRIO FPGA (and Microcontroller)
without having to have any manual operation.

All the parameters like frequency, voltage and phase of the multilevel inverter will be automatically
synchronised using the microcontroller. A Graphical User Interface on the LCD will be used for user
inputs as well as display of different parameters and can be used to acquire the parameters given by the
user. An improved diode clamped multi-level (five level) inverter will be implemented for grid connectivity.
The inverter will use the diodes as clamping devices. All of the software implementation will be done
using National Instruments LabVIEW.

As Pakistan is a country facing with severe Energy Crisis so need of the hour is to look for new Energy Generating
Resources and to improve the efficiency of presently available resources. Renewable Energy Resources such as
Photovoltaics, Wind, Low Head Hydro and GEO-Thermal are the expected Energy Resources of the future. The
general function of Multilevel Inverter is to synthesize a desired AC voltage from several levels of DC voltages.
For this reason, Multilevel Inverters are ideal for connecting either in series or in parallel to an AC grid with Renewable
Energy Sources such as Photovoltaics or fuel cells. Moreover, there will be no need of human efforts for Grid Connectivity of Renewable Energy Systems. All the necessary parameters will be auto controlled. User friendly interface will
allow everyone to visualize the ongoing operations. All the necessary parameters of grid supply can be visualized on
the Graphics Touch LCD Panel. Moreover, Multilevel inverter will also tend to increase the overall efficiency of
the whole system as compared to simple inverters.
