GENERAL AIMS

This module is prepared for students in the second semester who are following the
Certificate/Diploma programmes in Malaysian Polytechnics. It aims to expose
students to the Electrical Technology concept in each unit and to lead them towards
self-directed learning or with guidance from their lecturers.

PREREQUISITE SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE

GENERAL OBJECTIVES

At the end of this module, students should be able to:

1. state the law of magnetic attraction and repulsion for two current-carrying
conductors in close proximity
2. define magnetic flux, , and magnetic flux density, B
3. define magnetomotive force, Fm, and magnetic field strength, H, and state their
units
4. perfom simple calculations involving Fm = NI and H = NI/l
5. understand that magnetic fields are produced by electric currents
6. apply the screw rule and grip rule to determine magnetic field direction
7. recognize practical application of an electromagnet, i.e. electric bell, relay and
telephone receiver.
8. appreciate factors upon which the force F on a current-carrying conductor depends
9. perform calculation using F = BIl and F= BIl sin
10. describe types of DC generators and their characteristics
11. calculate generated emf for a generator using E = V+IaRa
12. state typical applications of DC generators
13. list DC machines loses and calculate efficiency
