Objective
In Europe , migration is tradition and not only s ince the Europe an le gis lation change d towards fre e migration of
Europe an citiz e ns . This is not fre e of challe nge s . Es pe cially in the cas e of care , migrants , ofte n face a double challe nge :
(i) not to s pe ak the language and not to be acquainte d with the culture of the re s ide nt country, and (ii) be unfamiliar with
the care and he alth adminis trations of the country. As a cons e que nce , e .g., e lde rly migrants in care home s s uffe r from
s ocial e xclus ion, with the ir re lative s als o s truggling with ge tting the right information and inte racting with the
adminis tration, migrants at home are ofte n re luctant to go to s e e the doctor in cas e of he alth is s ue s , a te nde ncy that is
ofte n furthe r aggravate d by cultural matte rs . Migrant te mporary care worke rs , who in addition ofte n do not have an
ade quate profe s s ional training, face the proble m of is olation, lack of profe s s ional background information and de ficie nt
communication with both the care d and the s upe rvis ion pe rs onne l. KRISTINAs ove rall obje ctive is to re s e arch and
de ve lop te chnologie s for a human-like s ocially compe te nt and communicative age nt that is run on mobile communication
de vice s and that s e rve s for migrants with language and cultural barrie rs in the hos t country as a trus te d information
provis ion party and me diator in que s tions re late d to bas ic care and he althcare . To de ve lop s uch an age nt, KRISTINA will
advance the s tate of the art in dialogue manage me nt, multimodal (vocal, facial and ge s tural) communication analys is
and multimodal communication. The te chnologie s will be validate d in two us e cas e s , in which prolonge d trials will be
carrie d out for e ach prototype that marks the te rmination of a SW de ve lopme nt cycle , with a re pre s e ntative numbe r of
migrants re cruite d as us e rs from the migration circle s ide ntifie d as e s pe cially in ne e d: e lde rly Turkis h migrants and
the ir re lative s and s hort te rm Polis h care giving pe rs onne l in Ge rmany and North African migrants in Spain.
