# 7j Electric Circuits.

Homework Pack

Name..

Week 1 homework.

## How can we use electricity safely?

Used sensibly and safely, electricity is a
very useful resource. Without it this
printed worksheet would not have been
possible.

## How many potential electrical hazards or dangerous

situations can you see in this diagram?

Week 2 homework

## How do we measure electricity?

This is a simple
series circuit
containing cells
(battery) a switch, a
bulb and an
ammeter. An
ammeter measures
current (in amps).
The symbol for a bulb is
Find out the symbols for the

remaining components in

## This plug needs

labelling. Label
it!

1. What is the role of a fuse in the circuit?

2.

## Why does a kettle have a 13 amp fuse but a DVD player

only has a 3 amp fuse?

Week 4 homework.

## How can we use models to help us think about

electricity?
In this model the people are
carrying 5 packets of energy
from the cell. The resistor
uses 1, the bulb uses 4 and
the people go back to the
battery (empty handed) to
collect more energy from the
cell, and go around again.

## Using your best scientific brain, describe how the water

system on the left is modelling the circuit on the right.

7jd Series and parallel.

Week 5 homework.

## What are the differences between series and parallel

circuits?

The circuit on the left is a series circuit; all the bulbs are
in the same loop. The circuit on the right is a parallel

## circuit; the bulbs are on different branches.

1. If one bulb broke in a series circuit the other bulb would

## a) go out as well b) stay lit (Circle correct answer)

2. If one bulb in the parallel circuit broke the other bulb
would a) stay lit b) go out as well (Circle correct answer)
3. Are the bulbs in your house in a series or a parallel
circuit? Think about what happens when a bulb goes.
They are in acircuit because..
..
4. Draw the parallel circuit below using electrical symbols.

Week 6 homework.

## 7je Electricity and you.

How do our bodies use electricity?

## Nerve impulses to and from

the brain travel as fast as
170 miles per hour.
Ever wonder how you can react
so fast to things around you or
why that stubbed toe hurts
right away?

## The heart relies on

electricity also.
The heart muscle is
controlled by
impulses. If these
impulses dont work
properly you might
need to have a
pacemaker fitted.
Here is a diagram of a pacemaker.
Explain how a pacemaker works and
why someone might need one
fitting.

7je Electric cars

Week 7 homework.

## Should we use electric cars?

This car uses no
petrol. It is
electricity. It
does not pollute
the atmosphere
but can only
travel 100 miles
before it needs
fully recharging.
Its batteries are
recharged from
mains electricity.
Mains electricity
may have been generated using fossil fuels!
Surely this is a
better option. Solar
powered cars use
free sunlight to
charge there
batteries.

## 1. Electrically powered milk floats were used in the 1950s

in Britain for early morning deliveries.
Give 2 reasons why electrical powered floats were used
and not solar powered floats.
