Working together makes

by David M. Johnson
In a rural county such as
Allamakee
County,
most
residents
understand
the
rigors and demands made
on the many farmers that
till the land and take care of
their livestock. With a global
competitive market and the
rising costs plus the toll taken
due to the time constraints that
farming requires, the difficulty
in keeping a farming operation
afloat is a task that seems to
be an ever increasing daunting
endeavor.
It seems that a little luck and
a lot of hard work is the formula
for success. But what is
forgotten is that it takes people
to run a farm and people that are
dedicated to making a farming
operation a success year after
year. The Enyart family of rural
Postville is not just dedicated
individuals, but is a family that
works together and makes the

necessary sacrifices to achieve

the success desired to make
their operation work.
Steve Enyart, age 48, his
wife Paula, age 47, and their
children, Adam (26), Alex (23),
Avery (17), and their hired
help, Mario, Ingrid and Byron,
have developed a working
relationship that not only keeps
the farm together but the family
as well. These individuals are
not only dairy farmers but have
made a direction course where
they have established another
business that complements
the dairy operation. Besides
managing a dairy operation, a
clientele has been established
so members of the family have
delved into custom work for
other farmers.

Allamakee County farm family

kept busy by both their dairy and beef cattle
by David M. Johnson
It was not that long, maybe
a generation ago, that farmers
were diversified in their farming
operations. A typical farm would
have chickens, pigs, beef cattle,
sheep, and own a herd of dairy
cows to milk morning and night.
Today, as operations are
growing, specialization is the
name of the game. There are
either dairy farms or livestock
confinements, with the crop
ground providing the necessary
feed for the livestock. In
Allamakee County there still
exists farms that have dual
operations and are successful.
Several weeks ago, a
local New Albin farm family
participated in The Standards
Agriculture Day issue that
promoted soil health and
viability. The Nancy Hartley
family presented themselves
as not only good farmers
but
responsible
stewards

of their land. They are also

beef and dairy farmers, a
multigenerational family that
works day to day to make ends
meet while overcoming the
demands of not only one type
of farming operation, but two.
Nancy, age 67, and her
three children, Mike, age 45,
Mark, age 41, and Brenda,
age 37, have that special bond
and ability to work together
to determine both a healthy
family relationship and a
healthy business relationship.
They oversee 120 dairy cows,
a 90 beef cow/calf herd and
350 acres of crop ground, an
operation that might overwhelm
some families, but this mother
with
her
children
have
determined to overcome the
many problems that are part of
farming today.
As Mike stated, We each

Pictured above, left to right, are Mark, Mike, Nancy and Brenda Hartley. Not only is the
make-up of those operating the family farm unique, but so is the farm itself in the fact that
the Hartleys operate both a dairy and a beef operation, something not readily heard of in
todays farming industry but something this family seems to make work out very well.

We Appreciate the
Opportunity to Partner
With You!

by David M. Johnson
Eat Beef, the West wasnt
won on salad, best sums
up the feelings of Waterville
farmer Steve Evanson when
it comes to his beef cows and
beef operation. This bumper
sticker is proudly displayed on
one of Steves vehicles and is
a conviction held dearly by him.
Steve
believes
he
is
producing a healthy product
and is a strong proponent
to shop and do business
locally so other local farmers,
especially
beef
farmers,
continue to survive and flourish
in todays economy. But this
beef producer was not always
in beef, as he started out with
raising hogs and milking cows.
I started farming in 1980
with my father-in-law, George
Wood, first as a hired hand,
milking cows and assisting
with a farrow to finishing hog
operation, reflected Steve
on his past experience with

beginning farming. After a few

years, this now 57-year-old
farmer and his wife, Sheryl,
bought on halves with the
livestock and from his fatherin-law purchased machinery.
Evanson gradually grew his
operation and by 2001 was
milking 140 Holstein cows in a
58-stanchion barn.
Deeply ensconced in milking,
what brought about the switch
to beef? It was either building
a parlor and free stall barn or
get out of dairy completely,
answered Steve. So, deciding
on not expanding the dairy
operation, the move to raising
beef cattle was almost a natural
change in direction. This
Allamakee County farmer was
always around cattle and he
knew he wanted to remain with
cattle; it just would not be dairy
cows. Watching newborns
each spring is a great feeling
to have on the farm, observed
Steve.
Having been involved in the

JUNE 1, 2016

beef business for 14 years,

starting the first year with the
purchase of 50 cows that were
to calve in April of that year,
he later purchased 35 cow/
calf pairs that same year. Due
to the lack of good pasture,
the expansion was limited to
85 to 100 cows. During the
past 14 years the cows were
mainly bred to Angus but a
couple of Simmental bulls were
purchased in the past.
Steve
wishes
to
acknowledge Dale Green,
Mark Stock, Dan Byrnes, Jeff
Springer and George and Ed
Bieber for providing the stock
to be purchased and advice to
Steve so he had the animals to
expand and the knowledge and
know-how on the ins and outs
when it came to beef cattle.
Today, from that early start
this beef operation will witness
100 cows calving this season.

Evanson...

Deering is sixth generation to farm in Allamakee County
by Lissa Blake
Although Tanner Deering is
the sixth generation of men in
his family to work on the family
farm, it wasnt always part of
his plan.
I was always told to go do
something else, said Tanner
in an interview with him and
his parents, Chuck and Kim
Deering of Postville.
Tanner, a 2011 Postville
High School graduate, finished
high school and headed off to
college at Iowa State University
(ISU) in Ames.
All the farm magazines said
you should encourage your
children who want to farm to
go try something else for five
years, said Chuck. Besides, I
had seen a lot of tough times
in the 80s. We were just getting
started and the middle 80s
didnt cancel us out. But a lot
of good farmers didnt make it.
We lost a lot of good guys and
witnessed a lot of struggles.
We didnt want to see him go

through any of that.

We always told him you
have to go to college and get
some experience. The farm will
always be there. If you dont
come back, well do something
else, said Kim.
GAINING EXPERIENCE
Tanner, who earned a
degree in Agricultural Studies
at ISU, knew early he didnt
want to wait until after college
to try out some different things.
While in college, he worked for
six or seven different farmers
and gained a lot of knowledge
from people with different
approaches to farming.
Farmers rely on part-time
college help, so I just figured
I would get my experience
there, he said.
By the time college was over,
Tanner was ready to return
home. By then, Chuck said he
knew Tanner was serious.
Deering...

have our own designated jobs,
but we help each other get
everything done. Although
there is always a difference of
opinion, whether it is a business
or farm, this family has managed
to cooperate by talking things
over together. Because of
Nancys experience, the kids
will consider her the go-to
person if there is a particular
problem or something that
needs individual attention.
Make your operation simple
and efficient, and be careful of
the debt load, is the pearl of
wisdom shared by Nancy as
she observes from years of
experience what it will take to
make an operation successful.
The farm equipment and
buildings are not brand new
but they are more than effective
to provide the means to make
a profit.
Not everything has gone
smoothly, as the floods of 2008
and 2013 offered challenges
and presented many questions
on whether or not this family
should continue, but they

managed to survive this

particular kink in their farming
experience. Of the 200 acres
of corn, 175 acres was flooded
with the last flood. This can be
devastating to any operation,
but to have two major floods
within five years could be
crippling. When things were
tough, these farmers, because
they were family, persevered
to survive and continued with
farming to the present day.
So, what came first, the
beef cows or milk cows? The
Hartley farm began with beef
cows long before their dairy
operation got off the ground.
The Hartley family had milked
cows in the 1920s but even
then the cows they milked
were beef cows. When they
established a healthy cow/calf
operation, a direction to return
to milking took shape in 1968
with the purchase of cattle,
the construction of buildings,
a step milking parlor in later

Brenda Hartley maneuvers cows around the barn during a milking session at the Hartley
family farm. The cows are milked in a step parlor and are just part of the overall Hartley
family farm operation, which also includes a beef cattle herd that helps keep the operation
well diversified and busy.

years, and equipment. They
understood that with beef cattle
there are less hours involved in
day-to-day management, plus
it is easier to get away from it
all with a beef herd but they
decided to include milking in
their farming activities.
Today, paid incentives for low
somatic cell counts, butterfat,
low bacteria counts, protein,
and volume allow a steady
bottom line that is profitable.
This dairy operation has, as
other county dairy operations,
dealt with the fluctuating milk
prices, making it difficult to pay
expenses when the milk price
is low. Plus, there are the long
hours, but the Hartley family
does not feel this is a burden
when milking but, rather, is what
is to be expected when milking
cows. They feel with the milk
check they are provided with a
steady income that offsets the
negatives of milking.

no plans to expand in number
of cattle or acres, as the family
wants to remain the same size

feel that expanding would
demand hiring additional help

within these county farmers
that more problems would arise
if there is an expansion of the
business. Almost as one, they

They have discovered that

of their accomplishments and

contributions to their community
and profession. Brenda has
observed that Farming is a
business and not an easy life,
but a rewarding life. There are
many jobs created because of
livestock farmers, food that we
eat, clothes on our back and
there is ethanol for our vehicles
because of corn. There are
a lot of jobs connected with
agriculture.
They have never secondguessed doing something
different other than farming,
believing there is always room
for the independent farmer
if farmers are allowed to be
independent when dealing
with their business decisions
and the work that comes
with it. Because of their own
experience when it comes to
working together as a family
on their farm, they feel that a
family farm is a good way of life
if there is enough labor to get
things done.
A farm operation, as this
family has shown, is a family
affair that offers the greatest

satisfaction
and
profitable
ventures when that family works
together. A major advantage
or positive that is held by the
Hartley clan is that they are
their own boss, that they decide
the direction of their business
and life. There is the heartache
of expenses and day-to-day
conflict with farming, but being
able to do it yourself and not
having someone looking over
their shoulder and telling them
what to do makes it worthwhile
to them.
They can usually adjust
their schedule if something
unexpected comes up as every

day is not the same, being

able to manage the peaks and
valleys. They have stated they
enjoy the flexibility that farming
offers and that makes it easier
to confront and overcome
those problems and challenges
that are part of the business.
The Hartley family of New Albin
loves being outdoors, love their
land and their cattle. They look
at running both a beef and dairy
operation as not a headache or
heartache, but something that
makes getting out of bed early
every morning as that special
thing that makes life worth
living.

We had had a good couple
of runs on the farm, which
increased our positive attitude
and things changed. I started
thinking about all the stuff wed
done to put things together. Just
like the rest of the generations
did, we just kind of tried to rekick everything, Chuck shared.
A FAMILY LEGACY
Historically speaking, it was
Tanners legacy to want to work
on the family farm. His greatgreat-grandfather,
Charles,
a dairy farmer, settled on the
Yellow River in 1864.
After the first Charles Deering

came his son, Mortimer,

followed by Irving and Charles,
Chucks father. Chuck was the
first Deering to raise beef rather
than dairy cattle.
My dad, Charles, worked
with his dad (Irving), who died
young. So, my dad and Uncle
Robert started farming on their
own when Robert was still in
high school, said Chuck.
Chuck, a 1977 Postville
graduate,
married
Kim
(Schultz), a 1978 graduate, in
1983. Chuck had attended a
special course for farm kids at
ISU and Kim went to Kirkwood
for floraculture. She owned the

Wishing Well Flower and Gift

Shop in Postville for 30 years.
She sold her flower shop a few
years ago to help out on the
farm until Tanner graduated.
The Deerings bought some
beef cows the same year they
were married. Some pasture
came up for rent, and Chuck
decided to branch out on his
own while still working for his
dad and cousin on their farm.
He and Kim bought the farm
where Tanner lives in the
1990s.

Kim said what Tanner

learned at college has really
helped them since he returned.
I went with ag studies because
I know I could do beef, hogs

science side of it, he said.
There is a lot of stuff he has
brought back already that has
really helped us, said Kim.
Weve definitely put more
GPS in our tractors, said
Chuck.
I guess you could say
weve been through a technical
upgrade, quipped Kim.
FARMING EASIER
Chuck said he and Kim
work hard to try to come up
with easier ways to do things
around the farm. We do no till
or vertical till, he said.
The Deerings utilize CIDR
synchronized breeding, utilizing
primarily artificial insemination
and a couple clean-up bulls.
We start calving the second
week of March, said Tanner.

The SimiAngus crossbred cattle on the family farm of Chuck

and Kim Deering, and now their son, Tanner Deering, have
provided a successful mix that has allowed Tanner to begin a
sixth generation of farming in Allamakee County for his family.
The crossbreed produces between 150 and 170 newborn
calves each year for the family beef operation, utilizing a CIDR
synchronized breeding process primarily through artificial
insemination with a couple of clean-up bulls. That calving
process typically begins in early to mid-March.

are Simmental Angus crosses.
Over the years, he said
Angus have gotten bigger
and Simmentals have gotten
smaller.
We calve between 150 and
170 a year, said Tanner.
Those numbers started
increasing because Tanner was
going to be home, said Chuck.
The family keeps all of its
heifers, and its bull calves are
steered and fed up until they
are around 800-900 pounds.
In a bull, we look for
performance and a good
disposition that will sire
daughters with good feet and
udders, said Tanner. We
look for maternal, rather than
terminal traits.
Tanner said they try to
choose bulls that will build off
the performance traits that are
already there. For the heifers,
we choose bulls noted for
calving ease. Its different for
mature cows, he said.
The Deerings grow all their
own feed and sell some corn
and soybeans when they have
it to sell.

The beef herd on the Deering farm has recently benefited from
the return of Tanner from a college education in Agricultural
Studies at Iowa State University, along with some valuable
farming experience gained by Tanner during his college career.
Tanner shares that one of the keys that has maintained the
success of their herd has been that they look for maternal traits
rather than terminal traits within their breeding selection process.

the winning strategy is best
defined by Steve: As with any
business you have to play to
everyones strengths and for
the whole operation to work we
have to work together. It helps
when Steve and son Alex are
the cogs that keep the custom
business going while the rest
of the family pitches in to tend
to the cows and the crops at
home.
This county dairy farm
encompasses both dairy and
crops, some 250 cows comprise
the total herd with an average
of 220 of the cows being milked
each day. The farm consists of
550 acres of cropland which
is divided between corn and
alfalfa. The Enyart operation
has a free-stall barn where the
cows are milked three times a
day in a double-eight step-up
parlor.

In addition to their family dairy farming operation, the Steve and

Paula Enyart family of Postville also runs a custom field work
business that not only helps out area farmers but also aids the
family finances. That custom work started nearly two decades
ago with custom silage bagging, and has expanded over the past
17 years to also include forage harvesting, combining, applying
anhydrous and other such tasks, such as the custom mowing
pictured above. The custom work business is mainly handled by
Steve and his son, Alex, with other sons, Adam and Avery, along
with wife and mother, Paula, helping bolster the dairy operation
to make that custom line of field work possible.

The cows are currently being
fed twice a day, the dry cows
and heifer rations are fed once
a day. All of the cattle are fed
with a Patz vertical TMR mixer.
A consultation with a
nutritionist is scheduled at
least once or twice a month
dealing with matters such as
diet acceptance by the cows
and the progression of the
fresh cows as they transition
into production. Attention to
the nutrition and health of the
herd has resulted in a 2015
rolling herd average of 30,955
on the three times a day milking
regimen for the milk cows.
With
so
many
family
members involved, how does
everything go smoothly so
there is no conflict? Adam is
the guy you go to when there
is an issue with the cows and
Steve is considered, due to the
most experience, as the one
to approach when dealing with
issues in general. But when
particular tough or difficult
decisions arise, everybody has
input, which seems to resolve

JUNE 1, 2016

any problems that pop up when

running the multiple businesses
that this Postville family has
become engaged in.
Because all of the tasks are
divided, Adam is the herdsman,
Steve the feed mixer, Alex is the
bookkeeper and maintains the
equipment, plus Avery, who is
still in school, has become the
jack of all trades when it comes
to the many other chores
and jobs that this business
requires. The work input and
involvement of each individual
helps when there are decisions
to be made. This involvement
assists in daily planning and
management because each
individual works in the operation
and is a witness to what the
strengths and weaknesses are
in the operation, so each has
a working knowledge that best
enables making a collective
course direction, if needed.

communication during the
busiest times of the year,
which may cause confusion
on what is to be done or how
it is to be done. Because of the
division of labor, there has to be
cooperation, especially when
these farmers are working at
bringing in the first crop of hay
and during fall harvesting.
Alex and Steve are operating
the chopping business, so
there is a demand on the others
plus there is a reliance on
some of the herd milkers who
are employed with milking the
cows. As Steve has observed,
Whether it is a family affair
or you have an operation with

others, there is going to be a

difference of opinion on some
things and there is no escaping
that. And no matter what, there
is always going to be ups and
downs in a business, your
operation must get through
them one way or another.
After many years in farming,
this family has found a way to
get through it.
As the dairy operation
evolved, a custom work for
hire business was established.
What began slowly escalated
into an established customer
base, an evolving cycle where
there might be different farmers
from year to year that patronize

the business, the difference

depending on how each
individual operation changes
from year to year that fits the
offerings of the Enyart custom
operations. As the years have
passed, the costs of maintaining
and operating machinery have
seen more of a demand for
individuals who provide the
machinery and know how to
meet the needs of each farmer.
The Enyarts believe that from
the standpoint of efficiency they
can do a much larger amount
of work in the same amount or

less amount of time to satisfy

each individual customers
farming operation needs and
wants.
The
Enyarts
custom
business has observed that
most
farmers
understand
the need to be a little flexible
when the dairy farm calls for
attention, but that does not
affect the quality of service
that is provided. This custom
business did not start overnight,
but has been in business for 17
years. It started with custom
silage bagging that expanded
into not only bagging but forage
harvesting, combining and
applying anhydrous for the coop in Postville. Due to charging
by the hour, the Enyarts do not
really know how many acres
they chop from year to year
but they do have some idea
how many acres they take care
of with their other business
responsibilities. They custom
mow close to 2,000 acres of
hay and applied about 1,800
acres of anhydrous just last
year. These three areas have
been the biggest need for their

services.
Between the two businesses
the bottom line has not suffered.
The year-to-year involvement
has brought the experience,
wisdom and discipline to make
the right monetary decisions
that bring about the balance and
affordability that each business
desires. Sometimes that new
equipment or improvement
might have to wait, but these
farmers feel that their focus
must be on the entire operation
and not just segments if a profit
is to be made at the end of the
year. There is the desire to
own more land but due to the
instability of commodity prices something farmers really have
no control over - it is difficult to
expand in acres and to make
the needed renovations or
purchase of newer equipment.
Steve has always been
involved in farming, and with the
number of people involved he
realizes that the management
of two diverse businesses
is necessary if he wants to
continue that involvement. He
and his family acknowledge

the positives, such as monthly

income and the diversification
in the business plus the
advantage where each person
has been given and has met
the responsibilities required
of each individual, something
that makes the involvement in
this operation so satisfying and
successful.
Yes, as Steve reflects,
You cannot shut off the cows
on weekends and holidays,
but the contentment that you
are doing something positive
and rewarding offsets any
negatives, he reasons. When
middle son Alex returned
to the farm, there was the
inspiration to expand. Because
of the decision to diversify, the
benefits have been noted that
when a slow year develops whether it is crop or milk prices,
the effect of the shortage is
offset by the upswings in other
areas of the entire operation.
As Steve and his family
look at the future, they hope

there is room for them and

knowing how things will work
out down the road as things
progress, the Enyarts know
that if you give it a chance
good things usually happen.

They recommend farming as

though they believe a lot of

equation to make that career
successful; they feel it is worth
it when done right.
There were times that Steve
harbored doubts, but due to his

lifelong involvement with his

to the realization that there
is a point in your life that it all
comes naturally and it is the
right thing to do. For this farm

is like running a sports

franchise. You have different
levels of minor leagues (baby
calves, unbred heifers). Then
you get the bred cows at
about 13 months if things go
right. Finally, at 22-24 months,
the cow hits the big leagues
(milking). There are different
obstacles along the way, but
then you get to see all the work
from that point start to pay
some bills, he said.
ABOUT THEIR HERD
Adam milks with his father,
Keith, and his uncle, Leo, who
have been milking their entire
lives. They have a Herringbone
Double 10 parlor by Germania.
The cows are milked from the
side, rather than from between
their back legs. There are also
arm take-offs, so the units are
supported during milking.
The herd of 150 Jerseys is
milked twice a day, and their
milk is sold to Organic Valley,
a farmer-owned cooperative
based in La Farge, WI.
The
Schulte
family
transitioned to organic in 1996

One of the main tasks performed by Leo Schulte on the Schulte

family dairy farm in rural Dorchester is to tend to the calves on
the farm. Leo said this past winter saw 71 calving huts on the
farm filled to capacity.
and the barn was retrofitted
from tie stalls to the parlor in
1997. The original barn, built
in 1981, had 64 tie stalls and
utilized Surge buckets and a
pipeline.
The milkers are dried up 55
days before they calve.

The Schultes keep all of their
calves: the heifers are raised as
replacements for breeding and
milking, and the steers are fed
up to 1,200 pounds and sold
to Organic Prairie, a division of
Organic Valley.
The cattle are fed primarily
with inputs grown right on the
farm. We run 660 acres, 460
tillable, and we rent 40 acres.
We plant around 150 in corn,
50 in beans and 260 in tillable
hay and small grains. If we
dont have enough, we buy
from local organic farmers,
said Adam.
WHY JERSEYS?
When asked why there are
no other cattle but Jerseys on
the Schulte farm, Adam said
the family has always had good
luck with them.
They are very efficient
on feed and have high milk
components, he said.

The organic dairy farm operated by brothers Keith and Leo Schulte, and now Keiths son, Adam
Schulte, in rural Dorchester has had great success with the Jersey breed, with Adam sharing
that the Jerseys are very efficient on feed and produce high milk components. The family milks
its organic herd in a Herringbone Double 10 parlor that had been upgraded from a tie-stall and
pipeline system in the late 1990s around the time the dairy operation transitioned to organic.
The Schultes feed their herd mainly from crops grown right on the family farm, which runs about

Besides beef cows, 175 acres
of corn is grown along with 70
acres of beans and 75 acres of
hay and oats annually.
To keep his cows and
calves strong and healthy,
this Waterville farmer has
developed a solid feed regimen
and program. In the warmer
months the cows graze mainly
on pasture with some dry hay
late in the season, if needed.
Choice mineral and fly control
are essential during the
summer months. Around June
15 the calves are started in
creep feeders with a calf starter
that is palatable for two to three
weeks, then switching over to
a grind and mix of corn plus
a product called Accuration,
which is an intake limiter.
Steves
feed
regimen
is supplemented with the
expertise of Ag Beef Consultant
Dan Schmitt, whose knowledge
on a variety of topics has been
invaluable when there requires
a desire to keep on top of the
nutrients and food values

necessary for the herds health.

Also, a special mention of the
Waukon Veterinary Service,
which has kept this beef herd
healthy and productive over the
past decade and more.
During the winter, the cows
receive dry hay - mainly first
crop - and corn silage. When
the cows are six weeks from
calving, they will be fed a
better selection of dry hay, plus
haylage and corn silage mix
through calving season until
let out to pasture in June. The
calves are weaned around the
first of October with the calves
kept on self-feeders and good
hay until the feeders are sold in
January. Besides a successful
feeding plan, Steve has
discovered over the years that
keeping his own replacement
heifers has resulted in a calmer
herd. Having a calmer herd,
Steve believes, has resulted
in a quality herd and has made

Evanson...
Continued from page 29
different members of the family
pitching in over the years,
Steve feels this experience
and environment has been
a positive influence on his
family and recommends it
to the younger generation
contemplating a future in the
beef industry. He knows it
is tough to start farming but
shares the advice that a young
couple today always has one
of the spouses working off the
farm and this way there is a
second income, plus a little
time away helps appreciate the
small things.
He highly recommends this
type of lifestyle to a younger
generation, especially when
considering that a cow/calf
operation would be a business
with less overhead and a
possible easier start-up than
other
farming
operations.
When considering the hills of
northeast Iowa and Allamakee
County, Steve also believes
that this is a plus as a beef
farmer best utilizes the hills
for pasture and hay due to the
limited nature of the terrain

providing ample acres for row

crops.
As a beef producer, Steve
feels that the future is bright
even though there has been
some expansion worldwide.
Due to the demand for beef at
the dinner table and grilling,
plus a growing population that
continues to like the taste of
hamburgers and steak, this
beef producer and others
will enjoy a profitable and
successful future.
There has been the desire to
expand but due to the limited
number of acres for pasture
plus the prohibitive land prices,
expansion is something down
the road for this producer.
The only negative element
for this farmer and others is
the more stringent regulations
on the use of antibiotics, but
Steve believes that this may
be a good thing. He feels if
the beef farmer and his local
veterinarian work together this
will not be a bothersome issue.
Steve and Sheryl Evanson
are a couple that have
successfully raised both a

JUNE 1, 2016

family and developed a thriving

business. They both feel that
having a positive attitude every
day is a key and it does not
hurt that most of their married
lives have been involved in
farming, which they believe is
a good way of life. What has
made things easier is their
farming operation has been
one where beef cows and their
calves are the center of their
universe. Enjoying the sight
of the newborn calves in the
spring along with the greening
of each new season makes
them appreciate what life has
to offer.
Nature has a tendency
of waking the senses to the
positive aspects of life, and
the gentle and carefree nature
of beef cattle only emphasizes
those positive aspects. This
Waterville couple and their
family are just one of many
on the farm who have had
the privilege to be part of the
beef cow environment and its
positive contribution to not only
society but nature as well.

Cattlemens
Association
awards scholarships
to local students

Pictured above in a photo taken during a recent grilling event sponsored by the Allamakee County
Cattlemens Association are members of the Association with four of the six area 2016 graduating high
school seniors who were each awarded scholarships by the Association in 2016. Pictured, left to right, are:
Front row - 2016 Scholarship recipient Nolan Hagen, Tate Ryan, and 2016 Scholarship recipients Chase
Pladsen and Brock Berns. Back row: Allamakee County Cattlemen Association members Chuck Deering,
Ryan Collins, Kerry Troendle, Don McCormick, Jim Trappe, Tanner Deering, Jerry Bulman, Dan Schmitt
and Ron Cota, 2016 Scholarship recipient Hannah Lage, and Allamakee County Cattlemen Association
members Dan Treangen, Shane Gavin and Jack Heffern. Not pictured: 2016 Scholarship recipients
Bethany Stock and Kaela Wood; and Allamakee County Cattlemens Association members Mike Collins,
Ed Bieber, Gary Whittle and Brad Winkie, who were manning the grill when the photo was taken; and
Allamakee County Beef Queen Christa Heffern, who was helping serve at the event.

The Allamakee County Cattlemens Association

recently awarded scholarships which have been given
annually to area graduating seniors who answer three
essay questions on beef. Funding for the scholarships
comes from a variety of events sponsored by the
Cattlemen throughout the year. The Cattlemen host
several grillings in downtown Waukon, and at the
Allamakee County Fair and Waukon Power Sports.
In the fall, the Cattlemen host a Club Calf Auction at
Northeast Iowa Equity Sales Commission in Waukon,
where they sell 30-40 calves to buyers throughout the
country, some as far away as Texas. In the spring,
the Cattlemen conduct a Breeding Soundness Exam
(Semen Check) for area producers. The Cattlemen
have been strong supporters of 4-H and FFA youth and
have also donated money to several local organizations,
including the Veterans Memorial Healthcare Foundation
Christmas Fantasy and area churches.
The Allamakee County Cattlemens Association
consists of area beef producers who care about beef
and they would like to express their appreciation to all
who have patronized them in their activities. Any beef
producer who would like to become a member of the
Association is invited to join.

of Harpers Ferry. She was crowned the 2015-2016 Allamakee
County Beef Queen November 7 at the Allamakee County
Cattlemens Association annual Purple Ribbon Prospect Sale
held at Northeast Iowa Sales Commission north of Waukon.
Christa is a junior at Waukon High School and lives on a beef
farm near Harpers Ferry. She enjoys being with her friends and
family, playing with her animals and being involved in 4-H and
FFA. After graduation from high school, Christa plans to attend
Iowa State University majoring in Biology with plans to go on
to either medical school or veterinary school. Her favorite part
about the beef industry is how it is able to unite all of the people
in the county.

Kaela Wood is the

daughter of Jim and
Michele Wood of Waukon.
She was crowned the 20152016 Allamakee County
Christa Heffern Beef Princess November
7 at the Allamakee County
Cattlemens Association annual Purple Ribbon Prospect Sale
held at Northeast Iowa Sales Commission north of Waukon.
Kaela recently graduated from Waukon High School and will
be attending Northeast Iowa Community College in the Beef
Science Technology program and plans to transfer to either the
University of Texas or University of North Dakota to continue her
studies in the Ag emphasis.
Currently she is out for softball and has participated in varsity
volleyball, 4H and FFA, holding various offices. Kaela is looking
forward to meeting everyone at the upcoming grill-outs and
has enjoyed the many promotions the Allamakee County Beef
Royalty Team has already taken part in, including parades and
school visits. Her favorite thing about the beef industry is working
hands-on with cattle and gaining new knowledge, experience
and a greater passion for the world of beef and all those who
are a part of it.
