Overnight Experience

In all, 177 attendees indicated that they participated in an overnight experience and 95% of those
participants reported being satisfied or extremely satisfied with their experience (see Tables 17
and 18). Compared to the 2014 Bruin Day, overall satisfaction of the overnight events increased
by 9%. Of particular note, extreme satisfaction increased from 53% in 2014 to 74% in 2015. See
Appendix L for reasons why overnight attendees chose their satisfaction rating.

Percent Agree or Strongly Agree

Overnight participants all agreed that they were able to meet and get information from
current UCLA students and almost all felt welcome at the overnight program. Slightly fewer
overnight participants felt the on-campus facilities and accommodations met their expectations,
but the overall level of satisfaction was still very high. More than 90% of participants agreed
that the experience helped inform their decision about attending UCLA.
Most attendees (N=127) expanded on how the overnight experience contributed to their
decision to attend UCLA. Those who agreed that the overnight was a positive contributor
(N=120) felt that it helped them get a sense of the college environment and helped them picture
what it would be like as a UCLA student. Many of them also talked about how it was nice to
meet others who come from similar backgrounds or would have shared experiences both prior to
and during UCLA. See Appendix M for all responses.
Of those who did not agree that the overnight was a positive contributor (N=7), some
reported that it was simply not a key factor. A few reported concerns about finding their “niche”
or wondering if the student body was the right “fit” for them. See Appendix N for all responses.

Appendix L. Reasons Why Respondents Chose Satisfaction Rating of Overnight Event by Level
of Satisfaction
Extremely  Satisfied
Admit  weekend  through  PREP  confirmed  my  decision  to  commit  to  UCLA.  Through  the  activities
1   hosted  by  PREP,  I  felt  a  sense  of  belonging  as  a  future  Bruin.
2   After  the  event  it  had  already  felt  like  I  had  known  the  PISA  members  for  so  long.
3   All  aspects  were  well  organized.
All  the  coordinators  and  my  host  were  amazing  and  supportive.  They  are  my  role  models.  I  like
how  we  not  only  explore  UCLA  campus,  but  also  visit  places  near  UCLA  including  Santa  Monica
4   and  Westwood  area.
5   All  the  staff  are  super  friendly  and  I  love  living  in  UCLA
ASU  met  every  need  possible  for  all  the  admits.  They  planned  out  our  days  from  morning  to
nightfall  and  every  second  of  the  day  was  full  of  laughter,  insightful  conversations,  and  amazing
6   experiences.
Attending  the  Southeast  Asian  Admit  Weekend  enabled  me  to  experience  the  UCLA  culture  and
student  life,  making  me  fall  heads  over  heels  for  the  school.  The  program  also  provided  me  with
7   an  opportunity  to  get  to  know  UCLA  better  (i.e.  traditions,  histories).
8   Awesome  people,  environement

Being  able  to  speak  to  current  students  in  a  setting  which  was  not  barred  by  parents  or  the
university  was  amazing.  The  students  were  open  about  their  experiences  at  UCLA,  and  they
openly  discussed  the  positives  and  negatives  of  the  school.  The  current  students  didn't  try  to
convince  us  to  pick  UCLA,  instead,  they  offered  their  honest  opinions  of  the  university  and  let  the
admits  see  if  UCLA  was  the  right  fit  for  them  or  not.  Also,  since  they  talked  honestly  about  the
negative  aspects  of  UCLA,  I  felt  much  more  comfortable  with  how  I  would  feel  if  I  attended  UCLA
for  the  next  4  years.  The  hosts  were  very  friendly,  welcoming,  and  helpful.
Best  part  of  the  weekend  for  me.
Enjoyed  the  experience,  and  learned  a  lot  of  the  university.
Every  moment  of  PREP  was  fun  and  I  made  great  friends.  Talking  with  current  students  there
made  me  choose  UCLA  over  Cal.
Everyone  had  a  lot  of  energy  and  all  of  the  students  and  staff  made  me  feel  at  home.  My  one
piece  of  negative  feedback  was  the  panel  was  too  long  and  repetitive.    Each  question  should  have
only  been  answered  by  one  person
Everyone  made  me  feel  welcomed  and  definitely  allowed  myself  to  see  myself  at  UCLA  in  the
future.
Everyone  was  so  welcoming  and  easy  to  encounter.
Everyone  was  warm  and  accommodating  and  the  events  were  enjoyable  and  informative.
Everything  went  very  smoothly  and  I  had  an  amazing  time.
Experienced  what  it  was  like  to  be  a  UCLA  student  and  learned  where  lots  of  things  are  on
campus.
Gave  me  an  opportunity  to  feel  the  campus  in  a  less  structured  way  and  see  it  more  'from  the
inside'.  Really  helped  give  me  an  idea  of  what  my  life  there  could  look  like.
Great  events
Great  experience,  loved  my  host  Brooke
Great  host

31

Great  Key  Note  Speaker  to  spark  on  the  weekend.  Welcoming  and  comfortable  vibe  throughout
the  weekend.  Everyone,  including  students  and  prospective  students  were  engaging.  Great
music,  food,  and  gathering  with  other  overnight  programs.  Lastly,  we  were  able  to  network!
Great  people,  great  learning  experience,  and  a  positive  time.
Host  accommodated  me  well.  I  felt  comfortable  and  at-‐home.  The  food  was  also  delicious,  i  was
well  fed.  Having  the  host  show  me  around  campus  at  night  was  interesting  and  fun.
I  attended  the  SWE  overnight  which  is  not  listed.  It  was  a  great  experience.
I  chose  extremely  satisfied  because  I  was  able  to  talk  to  prospective  students  who  might  attend  in
the  fall  and  current  students  at  UCLA  who  made  the  campus  feel  amazing.
I  chose  this  because  I  actually  met  my  future  roommates.  BLW  was  a  great  experience  and  I'm  so
happy  I  was  able  to  go!  I  think  that  because  of  this  opportunity  I  have  learned  to  love  UCLA  even
more.
I  chose  this  rating  because  the  RSS  deserves  it.  They  had  an  extremley  helpful  amd  fun  program
prepared  for  the  students  and  it  was  easy  to  get    to  know  new  people  as  well  as  learn  so  much
about  the  school.
I  created  a  really  close  relationship  with  the  members  and  admits.  I  also  learned  more  about  my
culture  that  I  wasn't  aware  of  before  attending  the  program.
I  enjoyed  staying  with  a  student  host  and  seeing  UCLA  housing.

32

I  enjoyed  the  weekend  because  it  provided  a  different  perspective  on  UCLA.  Also,  the  host  I  was
matched  with  was  friendly  and  all  of  the  volunteers  were  very  open  to  questions  or  simply  to
make  conversation.  The  workshops  and  events  provided  at  the  even  were  extremely  helpful.  I
enjoyed  that  all  those  students  made  an  effort  to  make  us  feel  part  of  the  campus  and  I  also  got
to  meet  and  make  new  friends.

I  felt  extremely  welcomed.  Not  only  did  the  hosts  make  the  weekend  incredible  because  they
seemed  very  enthusiastic  and  welcoming  -‐  claiming  they'd  be  there  for  us  regardless  of  whether
we  go  to  UCLA  or  not  but  the  actual  hostees  made  it  wonderful  too!  And  just  the  fact  that  PREP
made  it  feel  incredibly  family  like  and  experiencing  the  campus  from  a  current  students  Point  of
View  made  it  amazing  because  we  got  more  of  a  personal  feel  versus  a  general  one  day  tour.
I  felt  really  welcomed,  as  if  I  were  truly  a  part  of  the  Bruin  family.  My  family  heads  were  perfect:
they  were  open  to  all  students,  answered  our  questions,  joked  with  us,  and  bonded  with  us  in
ways  that  have  truly  affected  my  life.

35
36
37

I  felt  very  welcomed  by  my  hosts  at  SEA  Admit.  I  was  given  insight  to  UCLA  in  a  perspective  of  a
southeast  asian,  something  that  I  never  would  have  considered  or  care  for  if  it  wasn't  for  this
event.  I  was  exposed  to  key  opportunities  and  given  an  abundance  of  helpful  advice  that  will  help
me  succeed  at  UCLA.  Most  of  all,  attending  SEA  Admit  will  definitely  make  my  transition  to  a
school  as  large  as  UCLA  much  easier.  It's  nice  to  have  some  friendly  faces  around  campus.
I  felt  welcome  and  met  other  prospective  students.
I  felt  welcomed  and  at  home  with  the  community  and  the  school.

I  got  to  know  what  a  typical  day  was  like  for  students  and  the  activities  offered  on  and  off  campus
I  got  to  learn  about  the  women  engineers  at  UCLA
I  got  to  personally  ask  current  students  everything  I  wanted  to  know.
I  had  a  great  time  staying  with  students  and  getting  to  see  what  dorm  life  was  like.
I  had  a  lot  of  fun

I  had  so  much  fun  at  OSP.  The  students  both  incoming  and  current  were  incredible.  The  activities
were  so  much  fun,  and  I  learned  a  lot  about  the  school.
I  had  too  much  fun.
I  have  met  future  friends,  and  felt  extremely  welcome  at  UCLA.  I  can  say  that  I  had  one  of  the
best  weekends  of  my  life  thanks  to  my  host,  and  MECha.
I  have  never  felt  so  comfortable  with  my  own  person  before!  I  felt  SO  welcome  and  excited.  The
people  were  amazing  and  I  know  I  made  lasting  friendships.  I  found  a  family  already!
I  learned  a  lot,  met  amazing  people,  and  got  to  experience  life  on  campus.
I  learned  so  much  about  the  campus  and  the  students.  Everyone  was  extremely  helpful  and
welcoming.  I  met  new  friends  that  I  am  sure  to  stay  in  contact  with.  I  was  exposed  to  a
completely  new  environment  that  was  amazingly  helpful!
I  learned  what  it  was  like  to  be  on  campus  and  could  see  myself  attending  such  a  wonderful
school
I  loved  the  experience  and  getting  to  spend  the  weekend  at  the  campus  gave  me  a  feel  for  what
the  next  four  years  will  be  like.
I  loved  this  overnight  program.  It  is  really  one  of  the  main  factors  that  I  chose  to  come  to  UCLA
and  make  sure  that  circumstances  allowed  for  me  to  attend  UCLA  in  the  fall.  It  was  a  very
welcoming  program  and  I  felt  like  I  fit  right  in  and  like  I  was  at  home.
I  met  so  many  new  people,  experiences  the  food  of  UCLA,  and  learned  how  more  about  getting
around  campus.  The  hosts  gave  excellent  advice  about  the  college  experience  at  UCLA  in  general.
I  met  so  many  nice  people  and  everyone  was  welcoming  and  friendly.
I  truly  felt  at  home  during  this  overnight  program.  The  staff  were  very  informative,  were  great
company,  and  were  truly  caring  about  my  future.  The  admits  I  met  we're  extremely  social  and
welcoming.  Overall  the  program  was  organized  and  was  an  amazing  experience.
I  unfortunately  was  unable  to  spend  the  night;  however,  I  was  able  to  spend  the  Friday  before
Bruin  Day  with  the  MEChA  group!  I  was  nervous  and  scared  going  into  this  event,  but  by  the  end
of  the  day,  it  truly  was  an  amazing  experience.
I  was  able  to  experience  a  weekend  of  college  life  and  meet  so  many  new  people.
i  was  able  to  experience  student  life  firsthand.
I  was  able  to  form  a  strong  group  of  friends  and  current  students.
I  was  able  to  fully  experience  dining,  housing,  and  the  campus  environment  to  the  fullest
potential.    In  addition,  I  felt  welcome.    I  know  there  are  people  and  a  community  who  will  already
be  there  to  support  me  right  away.
I  was  worried  about  UCLA  students  being  stereotypically  superficial,  but  the  students  I  stayed
with  were  honestly  interesting  and  down  to  earth.  If  I  SIR,  it  will  be  because  of  them.
It  allowed  me  to  get  an  idea  of  potential  classmates  while  enabling  me  to  learn  about  and  meet
various  students  and  admits.    In  doing  so,  I  was  able  to  get  a  first  hand  idea  of  what  it  is  like  to  be
a  black  bruin.
It  felt  like  home  and  it  was  well  organized  with  fun  and  informative  events.
It  helped  me  see  what  life  would  be  like  at  UCLA
It  opened  up  the  doors  to  acceptance  of  my  Asian  heritage  that  I  previously  was  not  able  to
because  of  the  environment  in  Florida
It  was  a  great  way  to  get  to  know  both  current  and  future  fellow  Bruins.  It  also  allowed  me  to
experience  the  residence  halls  and  dining.  It  was  also  very  entertaining

72

It  was  a  great  weekend  and  I  think  that  being  a  part  of  this  program  really  made  me  want  to  be  a
Bruin  even  more.  I  learned  so  much  from  the  students  and  alumni  that  are  a  part  of  the  program.
It  was  an  excellent  program  that  provided  a  complete  experience  of  the  life  as  a  bruin  along  with
information  about  our  own  culture  and  such.
It  was  four  days  and  three  nights  long  but  in  that  time  span,  I  had  found  a  family.
It  was  fun.
It  was  great  to  see  the  dorms/hall  bathrooms  the  way  they  are  used  normally  and  hear  from
students  without  the  formality  and  pressure  that  the  presentations  and  panels  put  on  the
students  speaking.  It  was  a  very  honest  look  at  UCLA.
IT  WAS  HONESTLY  ONE  OF  THE  BEST  WEEKENDS  OF  MY  LIFE.  I  met  so  many  people  and  I  instantly
became  friends  with  everyone.  I'm  so  excited  to  see  them  in  the  fall.  I  wasn't  planning  to  SIR  on
Bruin  Day  but  after  the  program  I  made  sure  I  rang  the  bell.
It  was  so  much  fun

73
74

It  was  the  best  experience  I  have  ever  had.  It  reminded  me  so  much  of  my  participation  in  Cal
Poly  Pomona  Upward  Bound  Summer  Residential  program.  The  connection  I  had  with  my  family
and  participants  gave  me  such  a  good  impression  on  UCLA.  I  felt  welcome  and  like  I  could  start
over  and  truly  be  myself.
It  was  the  decision  maker!

It  was  very  encouraging  to  meet  this  group  of  students  who  welcomed  me  into  their  community.
I  think  the  community  of  queer  students  at  this  overnight  weekend  is  what  made  me  feel
welcomed  to  UCLA,  and  furthermore,  is  the  reason  I  will  choose  to  go  to  UCLA.  I  may  have  not
attended  UCLA  without  the  experience  in  this  overnight  program.
It  was  wonderful!
Loved  it
MEChA  made  me  feel  welcomed  and  at  home.  They  were  very  helpful  in  explaining  the  many
resources  available  at  UCLA.
Most  fun  I  have  ever  had  at  a  college  campus  yet.
My  host  answered  all  of  my  questions  and  made  me  feel  very  welcomed  into  the  Bruin  family.
My  Host  was  amazing  and  I  had  a  great  experience  overall.
My  host  was  awesome.
My  host  was  incredibly  nice  and  helpful.
My  host  was  very  nice  and  every  student  gave  great  advice  and  answered  every  question  I  had.
My  mentor  was  extremely  helpful  and  welcoming.  I  met  many  regent  scholars  like  myself  and  we
have  become  friends.  After  the  overnight  program,  I  knew  UCLA  would  be  my  home  for  the  next
four  years.
Negatives:  My  host  was  pretty  quiet,  and  the  program  had  a  lot  of  downtime  (I'd  rather  be  doing
things!)        Positives:  Great  and  informative  coordinators,  fun  making  friends,  super  fun  trip  to
Santa  Monica,  got  a  feel  for  the  campus  through  tours  and  games,  shadowing  a  class  was  very
helpful  in  my  decision  to  choose  LA  over  a  prestigious  art  school.
Never  have  I  made  so  many  connections  so  quickly  with  great  people  and  future  friends!  They
convinced  me  to  SIR.

Never,  never  have  I  ever  had  so  much  fun  in  a  short  period  of  time  and  seen  so  much.  The
experience  I  gained  has  motivated  me  to  SIR  and  do  the  FSP  program.  Building  a  family  with
current  and  future  students  was  incredible  and  they  push  so  hard  for  us  to  become  champions  at
UCLA.  Ultimately  they  ate  the  reason  why  I  chose  UCLA.
Not  only  did  SEA  Admit  Weekend  allow  me  to  explore  campus,  I  was  able  to  meet  a  bunch  of
amazing  mentors  and  future  classmates.    It  also  made  me  proud  of  my  cultural  identity.    SEA
Admit  Weekend  was  the  determining  reason  that  made  me  SIR  to  UCLA.    I  was  able  to  experience
the  housing  and  dining  first  hand  and  learn  during  interviews  with  UCLA  faculty  and  the  Alumni
Dinner.    I  felt  really  welcome  and  part  of  the  SEA  community  at  UCLA.
Overall,  everything  was  met  with  please.
Overnight  program  was  very  helpful  because  it  gave  opportunities  for  future  students  to  see  and
feel  the  life  inside  and  out  of  the  campus
Overnight  solidified  my  decision  to  attend  UCLA.  Extremely  fun  and  informative  3  days!
PREP  helped  me  finalize  my  decision  to  attend  UCLA
Prep  made  me  feel  like  home.  Before  I  thought  the  backdrop  of  a  big  city  would  make  me  feel
alienated  and  a  number.  After  meeting  fellow  Filipino  admits  and  bruins,  I  felt  I  found  a  second
family  at  ucla.
The  Black  by  Popular  Demand  event  was  incredibly  fun  and  helpful.  I  learned  about  resources
available  to  me  and  was  able  to  network  with  current  students  to  help  me  achieve  my  academic
goals  and  feel  more  comfortable  with  campus  life.  I  plan  on  joining  the  ASU  and  Afrikan  Women's
Collective  because  I  enjoyed  myself  so  much.
The  event  was  fun
The  food  was  great,  the  meetings  with  alumni  and  professors  were  amazing,  and  overall,  the
weekend  was  very  awesome
The  girl  I  stayed  with  was  amazing  and  I  got  a  really  good  feel  for  what  campus  life  was  like.
The  hosts  were  extremely  friendly  and  the  panels  were  helpful

100   The  keynote  speaker  was  amazing  and  i  felt  like  i  was  abl  to  meet  a  lot  of  people  i  identified  with.
The  overnight  program  I  attended  really  helped  me  feel  like  I  was  a  part  of  UCLA  even  before  fully
101   committing  to  the  university.
The  people  I  met  at  SEA  Admit  Weekend  made  me  feel  like  there  was  a  community  at  UCLA  for
me  to  rely  on  incase  I  needed  any  help.  They  helped  me  understand  the  importance  of  my
102   cultural  identity  and  how  I  am  capable  of  accomplishing  anything.
103   The  people  were  so  welcoming  and  I  met  a  lot  of  new  friends
104   The  people  were  welcoming,  there  were  many  enjoyable  activities  I  did,  and  my  host  was  great.
The  PREP  team  was  very  friendly  and  welcoming.  They  made  me  feel  very  at  home  and
comfortable.  Having  the  opportunity  to  meet  other  admits  was  incredible  and  also  finding  a
105   Filipino  community  made  me  feel  very  at  home.
The  program  heads  made  the  program  a  very  enjoyable  experience  and  made  UCLA  into  a  vibrant
106   environment.
107   The  program  was  amazing!  Informative,  welcoming  and  fun.
The  program  was  extremely  fun  and  I  indeed  found  my  relevenSEA  with  the  people  I  met  there.  I
108   also  made  some  friendships  I  know  that  are  going  to  last  quite  a  while.
109   The  program  was  fun  and  gave  me  a  feel  of  what  UCLA  is  like.

The  RSS  students  gave  us  tours  around  campus  and  outside  of  campus.  The  students  gave  input
on  their  experience  in  the  RSS  program  and  at  UCLA.  They  were  all  friendly  and  we  became  close
friends.
The  students  of  MECHa  put  together  a  both  successful  and  helpful  weekend.  They  made  me  feel
at  home  and  provided  me  with  a  sense  of  community.
They  made  me  feel  welcomed.
They  made  the  black  community  feel  very  welcoming.
They  were  friendly  and  welcomed  me  with  open  arms.
This  program  showed  me  how  the  students  interacted  with  one  another,  the  campus
environment,  and  what  more  UCLA  had  to  offer  than  just  academics.  The  students  were
welcoming  and  friendly,  they  treated  us  as  their  family  and  sacrificed  their  time  and  space  for  us!
This  program  was  very  informative  and  welcoming,  and  it  provided  me  with  connections  to
undergraduate  students  that  have  similar  academic  interests.
This  was  the  best  experience  and  determining  factor  of  my  decision  on  UCLA.
We  learned  what  it  takes  to  be  a  successful  African  american  in  the  school  and  in  life.  As  a  group
we  had  many  heart  to  heart  serious  talks  about  what  it  feels  like  to  be  black  and  just  personal
things  in  general.  through  this  program  i  felt  accepted  into  UCLA  even  being  part  of  the  3%  of
african  americans  that  attend.

Satisfied
1   Because  it  was  very  satisfying
2   Could  have  been  somewhat  better  organized
3   Everyone  was  nice  and  it  was  helpful  to  chat  with  students  during  dinner.
Experiencing  the  overnight  program  gave  me  the  chance  to  meet  new  people  and  try  to  connect
with  others.  It  was  nice  to  have  a  host  and  get  a  taste  of  the  dorms.  One  complaint  I  have  is  the
4   organization  of  the  program.
I  enjoyed  being  able  to  stay  overnight  in  a  dorm  in  order  to  get  the  complete  atmosphere  of  the
school  and  what  the  dorms  are  like;  however,  it  would  have  been  fun  to  do  a  group  wide  night
5   activity  such  as  capture  the  flag  on  campus.
I  enjoyed  meeting  my  host  and  being  able  to  stay  in  the  dorms  because  now  I  have  a  better  idea
what  it  feels  like  to  stay  overnight  at  UCLA.  It  was  hard  for  me  to  talk  to  all  the  other  students  but
6   overall  I  really  liked  walking  around  as  I  admired  the  beautiful  UCLA  campus.
7   I  had  a  great  time,  but  I  had  to  sleep  on  the  floor  in  a  common  room  of  a  residence  hall.
8   I  had  fun  at  the  overnight  stay  but  it  started  out  rough  the  first  night.
I  had  to  leave  early  so  I  did  not  get  the  full  experience,  but  I  was  very  satisfied  with  the
9   community  and  the  events  I  participated  in.
I  met  a  lot  of  new  people  and  the  dorm  in  experience  was  great!  I  got  a  better  understanding  of
10   what  type  of  person  I  am  and  who  I  would  prefer  as  a  roommate.
I  really  liked  being  able  to  stay  in  the  dorms  and  wander  around  campus  with  a  student.  I  only
11   wish  I  had  time  to  mingle  with  more  people.
I  was  quite  satisfied  with  the  OSP  for  RSS  because  it  really  got  me  exposed  to  the  UCLA  campus
12   environment  and  also  to  the  ambiance  of  the  university.
I  wish  my  hosts  would  have  taken  me  out  and  around  campus  instead  of  just  staying  in  their
13   dorm  room

It  was  a  fun  experience.
It  was  a  good  experience  sleeping  in  the  dorms  and  hanging  out  eith  actual  students.
It  was  an  awesome  experience  but  it  felt  as  if  we  were  doing  too  many  activities  in  a  short  period
of  time.
It  was  fun  but  very  tiring
It  was  usefull  for  me  to  know  how  was  the  student  real  life  at  the  dorms  complex  (The  Hill).
It  was  very  fun  and  my  host  was  nice  and  welcoming.
My  host  was  extremely  uninvolved  in  the  Afrikan  club  so  she  did  not  participate  in  the  activities
nor  give  me  an  accurate  description  of  the  club.  Also,  I  suggest  more  organized  housing  for  the
admits.  Sleeping  on  the  hard  floor  every  night  initially  makes  it  hard  to  like  UCLA.
My  host  was  nice,  but  not  very  interesting.

22
23

Overall,  all  the  events  set  up  for  us  were  really  fun  and  helpful,  but  I  did  not  enjoy  sleeping  on  the
floor  because  I  was  not  able  to  rest  well  for  the  next  day.  Also  Dinner  the  first  day  was  served  too
late  in  the  day  I  was  really  hungry.  However,  this  program  really  played  a  drastic  role  to  why  I  am
attending  UCLA.
The  overall  program  was  amazing,  but  there  could  have  been  more  structure  to  the  program

24
25

The  overview  of  the  university  provided  by  faculty  as  well  as  the  student  panel  were  very
informative.    Some  of  the  hosts  could  have  taken  their  hostees  out  to  explore  the  campus  more
and  asked  what  they  were  interested  in  experiencing,  but  overall  the  program  was  helpful  in
showing  me  the  positives  and  negatives  of  the  institution.
The  presentation  provided  useful  information  for  me  when  I'm  preparing  for  my  year  at  UCLA.

The  program  should  start  in  the  morning  so  you  are  able  to  shadow  your  host  throughout  the  day
and  see  what  a  typical  day  and  night  would  be  at  UCLA,  such  as  sitting  in  on  class,  going  with
student  to  study,  etc.  Students  could  be  paired  with  hosts  due  to  club  interests/major/  etc,
instead  of  random.  Hosts/Student  matches  could  be  paired  earlier  so  students  and  hosts  can
reach  out  to  each  other  via  Facebook,  etc  so  that  they  can  plan  how  they  would  like  to  spend
their  time  at  UCLA  such  as  sitting  in  on  a  certain  class,  or  going  to  a  club  meeting,  etc.
There  was  always  something  planned  during  the  duration  of  the  program,  but  some  of  the  events
were  a  bit  dull.
There  weren't  any  planned  activities  for  the  students  after  the  panel  so  I  would've  liked  to  see
more  group  activities  but  other  than  that  it  was  great!

Neither  Satisfied  nor  Dissatisfied
I  felt  that  the  program  failed  to  fully  engage  me  in  the  atmosphere  of  campus  life.  Regardless,  I
was  able  to  experience  a  great  stay  because  of  my  host  who  made  me  feel  welcome  and  always
1   looked  after  me.
I  love  my  hosts  but  the  sleep  deprivation  and  constant  walking  made  me  really  tired.  Also  I  felt
2   more  lonely  and  isolated  than  involved  most  of  the  time  in  the  program.
I  don't  particularly  enjoy  the  company  of  large  crowds,  and  so  the  amount  of  students  was
3   overwhelming.
It  was  cool  to  live  on  campus,  but  the  activities  were  too  competitive  for  me.  We  didn't  have  any
down  time.  Also  I  am  an  art  major  and  everyone  else  were  really  competitive  South  Campus
4   Majors.
Got  a  really  good  feel  for  campus  and  what  it  would  be  like  to  be  a  student  at  UCLA  but  the
5   schedule  was  really  packed  and  some  things  felt  repetitive.

Although  there  were  many  events  scheduled  for  us,  it  seemed  like  too  much  at  times.  We  were
allotted  less  than  six  hours  of  sleep  a  night  and  expected  to  pull  an  all-‐nighter  on  the  final  night.
Moreover,  there  seemed  to  be  a  lot  of  dead  time,  which  was  filled  by  group  games,  something  I
personally  dread.  There  were  a  couple  of  insightful  events  here  and  there,  but  I  did  not  find  all  of
them  to  be  helpful.
I  felt  that  the  M.E.Ch.A  program  was  too  extreme  for  me.

Appendix M. Overnight Attendee Responses as to How the Overnight Experience Positively
Contributed to Decision to Attend UCLA

1)  My  host  and  roommates  were  super  nice  and  supportive.  I  found  a  lot  of  common  points
between  me  and  them.      2)  Prior  to  Regent's  OSP,  I  went  to  UC  Berkeley's  Regents  Overnight
Program.  To  be  entirely  honest,  UCLA's  housing  was  way  better  than  Berkeley's.    3)  I  love  playing
games  with  prospective  regents  and  current  scholars.
A  lot  of  my  questions  were  answered  by  my  hosts
After  participating  in  Raza  weekend,  I  immediately  submitted  my  SIR  and  I  am  very  excited  to
attend  UCLA  in  the  fall.
after  staying  on  the  campus  in  the  actual  UCLA  dorms,  I  can  see  myself  attending  there.
At  first  I  was  a  bit  hesitant  about  going  to  UCLA  considering  I  was  admitted  to  UC  Berkeley.
Berkeley  is  a  better  ranked  school  than  UCLA,  and  therefore  I  was  more  inclined  in  attending
Berkeley.  However,  with  this  overnight  experience  I  learned  the  true  importance  of  college,  and
I  know  that  I  cannot  decide  to  go  to  a  school  because  of  name,  but  rather  based  on  where  I  see
myself.  I  am  definitely  considering  UCLA.
At  first  I  was  scared  about  the  academic  rigor  of  the  college  but  meeting  all  the  incoming
students  helped  me  realize  I'm  not  the  only  one  in  the  situation.  The  hosts  helped  assure  us  that
we  can  succeed.
Attending  SEA  Admit  Weekend  further  reassured  me  on  my  decision  to  attend  UCLA.
Before  attending  SEA  Admit,  I  was  certain  that  I  would  attend  UCLA  in  the  fall.  However,  after
attending  SEA  Admit  I  was  ecstatic  and  eager  to  begin  my  college  career  at  UCLA.  Prior  to  the
event,  I  only  knew  of  the  school  from  what  I  read  online  and  brief  tours  from  friends  that
currently  attend  UCLA,  but  to  have  actually  experience  a  few  days  and  nights  on  campus  helped
me  confirm  that  UCLA  was  the  right  choice  for  me.  Everything  felt  right,  from  interacting  with
other  prospective  and  current  students  to  walking  around  the  campus  (probably  more  than  I
would  like).
Before  experiencing  BOE,  I  was  turned  off  by  the  large  size  and  student  body  at  UCLA.  I  had
assumed  that  student  life  would  not  be  very  intimate,  and  that  there  would  be  a  lack  of
academic  and  intellectual  intimacy  as  well.  However,  talking  to  students  at  BOE  about  these
concerns  made  me  realize  that  many  of  my  assumptions  were  not  true  at  all,  and  I  also  realized
that  all  of  the  students  at  UCLA  get  used  to  the  few  disadvantages  that  the  university  has
anyway.
Before  the  admit  weekend,  I  was  very  unsure.  But  going  to  the  admit  weekend  made  me  feel  so
welcomed  because  the  hosts  made  it  feel  so  personal  and  were  incredibly  honest  about  their
experiences.  Seriously  speaking  I  felt  a  genuine  family  feel  and  I  gained  so  many  new  friends.
PREP  made  it  personal  to  us  and  our  culture  instead  of  doing  generic  tours  and  generic
speeches.
Being  able  to  stay  overnight  really  contributed  to  my  decision  because  I  really  can  picture  myself
sleeping  in  the  dorms,  walking  around  the  UCLA  campus,  and  know  that  people  in  MECHA  will
support  me.

Being  around  people  that  look  like  who  are  minorities  at  a  school  was  a  major  factor  that  played
into  my  decision  to  attend  UCLA.  I  had  no  idea  what  the  school  would  be  like  when  I  came  to
visit  UCLA  but  during  Admit  Weekend  I  realized  that  despite  UCLA's  size  once  you  find  your
community  and  your  niche  the  school  gets  a  lot  smaller  and  it  is  not  so  overwhelming.  This
overnight  program  was  a  key  to  my  decision  to  SIR.
During  SEA  Admit  weekend,  I  met  some  of  the  most  amazing  people  in  my  life  within  3  nights
and  3  days.  The  programs  have  made  a  huge  impact  in  educating  me  and  answering  my
questions.
Everyone  I  met  in  the  program  were  extremely  nice  and  helpful.    We  did  many  fun  activities  that
made  me  feel  very  welcomed.
Everyone  was  so  welcoming  and  friendly.  I  was  so  happy  the  entire  time  and  I  didn't  want  it  to
end.  Now  we  are  all  connected  on  facebook,  instagram,  snapchat,  and  twitter!  We  plan  to  meet
when  we  come  back  in  the  fall  and  hang  out.  I  miss  all  of  them  already.  I  never  expected  to  love
the  campus  as  much  as  I  did.  It  was  amazing.
Gave  me  reality  of  life  at  UCLA
Getting  to  meet  other  students  like  me  and  in  the  same  position  that  I  was  in  when  deciding  on
school.  The  hosts  were  welcoming  and  very  helpful  in  answering  questions,  honestly  and  in  the
student  perspective.
Getting  to  stay  in  a  dorm  and  see  the  students  interacting  and  living  there  made  it  feel  more  real
and  made  me  realize  I  could  see  myself  living  there  and  having  fun!
Great  opportunity  to  experience  campus  and  meet  people
Hearing  about  sports  programs  and  clubs,  the  beautiful  weather,  the  energetic  and  positive
environment,  the  extremely  nice  people  (i  did  not  meet  one  person  who  was  unkind),  the  fun
quirky  traditions,  the  vast  academic  opportunity  all  confirmed  my  decision  to  attend  UCLA  in  fall
2015.
Helped  me  to  experience  the  true  campus  life.
I  coudl  envision  myself  as  a  student
I  didn't  think  much  of  UCLA,  just  because  it  didn't  have  my  major  preference.  After  SEA  Admit
weekend,  it  was  hard  to  not  consider  UCLA,  the  students  are  friendly  and  the  environment  is
perfect!
I  didn't  want  to  leave.  Everyone  was  so  welcoming.
I  enjoyed  the  housing  so  I  am  considering  attending.
I  felt  at  home.  Also,  all  of  the  students  were  so  enthusiastic  about  the  school.
I  felt  at  home.  The  students  I  spoke  to  regarding  classes,  resources,  environment,  etc  all
contributed  to  my  decision.  I  was  able  to  ask  any  questions  and  get  a  variety  of  experiences.  I
was  also  able  to  get  a  taste  of  what  dorm  life  was  like,  and  what  type  of  individuals  were  part  of
the  UCLA  community.
I  felt  comfortable.  The  hosts  were  just  incredible  and  met  the  needs  of  every  student  and  made
sure  to  give  everyone  a  positive  experince.
I  felt  extremely  welcomed  and  valued,  allowing  me  to  confirm  my  desire  to  attend  UCLA
I  felt  like  I  fit  in  with  the  current  students  and  talking  to  them  convinced  me  to  come  to  UCLA.
I  felt  like  I  was  part  of  the  Bruin  family.
I  gained  reassurance  from  the  program  because  I  was  able  to  network  with  others  who  are
facing  the  same  decisions  that  I  am.  The  overnight  experience  made  me  feel  welcomed  and  gave
me  the  opportunity  to  become  comfortable  with  the  campus.

I  got  a  chance  to  experience  the  college  life!
I  got  the  sense  of  what  living  on  campus  is  like.
I  got  to  experience  student  life  more  in  depthly
I  got  to  really  connect  with  my  host.  He  is  the  same  major  as  me,  so  he  was  very  helpful  with
answering  any  of  my  questions.
I  got  to  see  the  dorms  and  saw  a  place  for  myself  among  the  students
I  got  to  sort  of  experience  a  day  in  the  life
I  had  already  SIR'ed  to  UCLA  when  I  attended  Bruin  Life  Weekend.  Spending  the  weekend  at
UCLA  made  me  feel  even  more  confident  in  my  choice.
I  had  already  SIRed  before  the  overnight  experience  however  the  program  did  reassure  me  that  I
made  the  right  choice.
I  had  already  submitted  my  SIR  before  the  overnight  experience  but  it  definitely  got  me  more
excited  to  attend  UCLA  in  the  fall.
I  learned  a  lot  from  the  current  students  and  really  go  to  see  how  life  on  campus  would  be.  I  felt
extremely  welcomed  and  comfortable  throughout  the  weekend.
I  learned  about  academics,  explored  campus,  and  met  really  friendly  people.
I  learned  more  about  the  LGBT  community  and  how  I  would  fit  in  to  the  campus
I  loved  all  the  people  I  met  and  I  felt  like  I  fit  in  with  the  environment  there.
I  loved  meeting  admitted  students  of  my  race!  I  felt  like  I  was  at  home  and  never  left  out.  The
prom  night  was  also  fantastic!  There  are  so  many  talented  Filipinos,  it's  unbelievable!
I  loved  the  campus  and  I  feel  that  the  school  has  a  lot  of  opportunities  for  me.  UCLA  is  amazing!
I  made  me  feel  right  at  home
I  met  a  lot  of  friendly  people.
I  met  amazing  future  classmates  as  well  as  mentors  who  are  currently  UCLA  students.
I  met  new  people  that  are  attending  the  school  in  the  fall
I  met  new  people  that  i  will  accompany  me  in  the  future
I  met  other  admitted  students  whom  I  was  similar  to  as  well  as  was  able  to  speak  with  many
current  students  pursuing  similar  degree  programs.    Because  of  this,  I  feel  like  UCLA  would  be  a
good  fit  for  me.
I  really  wanted  to  see  what  campus  day-‐to-‐day  life  was  and  I  liked  it.
I  stayed  overnight  in  a  dorm  and  the  dorming  experience  was  wonderful.  My  host  explained  to
me  the  different  facilities  and  the  many  different  resources  of  the  school.
I  talked  to  many  current  students  who  were  in  my  situation  last  year  in  which  they  had  to  move
far  away  from  home  and  they  made  me  feel  confident  and  comfortable  in  my  decision  to  attend
UCLA.
I  think  seeing  the  people  and  current  students  really  confirmed  for  me.
I  wanted  to  see  what  it  was  like  to  actually  stay  in  a  dorm  and  to  walk  around  campus  as  a
student.  That  was  important  to  me  in  my  college  decision,  and  that's  what  the  overnight
experience  allowed  me  to  do.
I  was  able  to  get  a  feel  for  being  a  student  at  UCLA  by  sleeping  in  the  dorms  and  eating  in  the
dining  hall
I  was  able  to  hear  experiences  first  hand  from  a  current  freshman.
I  was  able  to  learn  a  great  deal  about  the  campus  and  some  of  the  typical  experiences  students
had  on  campus.

I  was  able  to  meet  some  very  cool  and  awesome  people  who  really  helped  shape  my  opinion
about  UCLA  and  how  I  can  fit  in  and  do  well  in  the  campus.
I  was  able  to  picture  myself  at  UCLA  while  interacting  with  students  who  are  in  the  position  as  I
was  (indecisive).  The  housing  experience  gave  me  a  better  understanding  of  where  I  want  to  be.
The  welcoming  atmosphere  of  the  campus  and  students  contributed  to  my  decision  the  most.
I  was  able  to  see  how  life  at  UCLA  freaky  is  like  and  learn  from  other  students'  input.
I  was  happy  to  find  such  a  great  LGBTQ  community  at  UCLA.
I  was  worried  I  was  not  going  to  like  living  in  a  hall,  but  I  did,  which  means  going  to  UCLA  is  a
little  cheaper  than  I  thought.  I  also  met  a  bunch  of  people  from  my  area,  which  was  nice  because
I  know  I  won't  be  the  odd  one  out.
I  was  worried  that  I  wouldn't  fit  in  at  UCLA,  but  the  family  I  was  with  in  the  overnight  program
always  made  me  feel  comfortable.  Never  once  did  I  catch  myself  feeling  lonely  or  out  of  place.
I  went  to  triton  day  and  felt  welcome  amongst  the  Muir  community.  PREP  made  the  Muir
community  minuscule  compared  to  the  family  I  created  at  UCLA
it  confirmed  my  thoughts  that  UCLA  is  innovative  and  will  inspire  me  to  do  great  things.
It  gave  great  insight  into  actually  attending  UCLA.
It  gave  me  a  good  idea  of  UCLA  environment
It  gave  me  a  preview  of  life  at  ucla
It  gave  me  an  inside  look  to  student  life.
It  had  a  big  impact  because  it  made  me  comfortable  and  felt  like  they  fared.
It  helped  me  figure  out  if  UCLA  would  feel  natural  to  me.
It  helped  me  get  a  feel  for  the  school
It  helped  me  get  a  feel  of  the  environment  and  people.
It  helped  me  get  a  feeling  what  UCLA  is  like,  what  it  stands  for,  and  how  the  people  are  like.
It  made  me  certain  that  UCLA  was  a  good  fit  for  me  and  ultimately  solidified  my  decision  to
attend.
It  made  me  feel  like  maybe  I  want  to  go  to  an  'artsier'  because  the  Regents  Scholar  Society  was
very  South  Campus,  but  I  realized  I  will  find  my  niche  and  that  RSS  isn't  really  a  reflection  of
UCLA.
It  showed  me  UCLA  from  a  student  perspective  and  will  factor  into  my  ultimate  decision.
It  was  fun  to  stay  with  a  current  student  and  definitely  gave  me  a  good  idea  of  student  life  at
UCLA.
It  was  fun!
It  was  nice  to  be  able  to  tour  the  place  I  will  be  calling  home  for  the  next  6  years.
It  was  the  determining  factor  in  influencing  me  to  SIR  to  UCLA.
it  was  the  main  reason  I  decided  to  commit  to  ucla
It  was  the  overnight  stay  that  convinced  me  to  commit  to  UCLA.  It  gave  me  a  glimpse  into  the
dorm  life,  the  atmosphere,  and  allowed  me  to  learn  about  what  UCLA  has  to  offer.
Living  on  campus  and  shadowing  a  class  helped  me  learn  a  lot  about  how  I'd  fit  into  the  UCLA
student  culture;  I  think  that  I  definitely  would.
Living  on  campus  for  a  few  days  and  feeling  the  environment  in  which  I  would  spend  my  years  of
college.

Meeting  current  and  prospective  students  from  the  overnight  program  contributed  to  my
decision  to  attend  UCLA.  Prior  to  attending  the  program,  I  was  debating  whether  or  not  to
attend  UC  Berkeley  or  UCLA.  I  heard  rumors  about  the  cut  throat  environment  at  UC  Berkeley.  In
contrast,  at  UCLA,  everyone  is  friendly  and  always  offering  a  hand.  In  addition,  seeing  the  school
spirit  that  UCLA  has  compared  to  Berkeley  definitely  caused  me  to  lean  toward  UCLA.
Meeting  prospective  students  was  also  a  contributor.
My  decision  to  attend  UCLA  was  made  before  I  attended  the  overnight  experience.
My  host  was  amazing  and  she  was  very  open  about  talking  about  her  experience.  Also,  I  had  the
opportunity  to  meet  many  current  Bruins  over  meals  which  only  showed  me  how  open  and
inviting  everyone  on  campus  is.  However,  I  felt  that  the  program  was  not  very  engaging.
My  host  was  amazing.  We  exchanged  information  and  we  communicate  via  text.  He  helped  me
sign  up  for  housing.  The  whole  experience  was  fun.
My  host  was  so  nice  and  helpful.  She  answered  all  of  my  questions  willingly,  and  even  used  a
swipe  to  buy  my  food  since  I  had  arrived  late
My  hosts  were  amazing  and  everyone  did  their  best  to  make  sure  none  of  my  questions  were
left  unanswered
My  mentor  was  extremely  helpful  and  welcoming.  I  met  many  regent  scholars  like  myself  and
we  have  become  friends.  The  Overnight  Program  gave  me  the  opportunity  to  experience  the
student  life  at  UCLA.  After  the  Overnight  Program,  I  already  knew  UCLA  would  be  my  home  for
the  next  four  years.
My  mind  was  already  made  up  about  UCLA  before  the  overnight  experience  but  it  was  still  very
helpful  to  know  the  different  dorm  options  at  UCLA.  The    people  there  were  very  friendly  and
welcoming  which  made  me  feel  more  comfortable.
My  overnight  experience  helped  me  to  see  how  it  was  to  be  a  UCLA  student,  if  I  had  not
attended  the  overnight  experience  I  would  be  unsure  in  my  college  decision,  but  I  am  positive
UCLA  is  the  right  choice  for  me.
Now,  I  get  stuck  whether  or  not  I  should  choose  UCLA  or  UA.  Before  I  though  of  UA  more.
Reaffirmed  the  accepting  nature  of  the  campus
Seeing  how  it  is  to  stay  overnight  at  UCLA  contributed  my  decision  to  attend  UCLA  and  the  staff
from  Raza  weekend.
Talent  show  was  great
The  culture  shock  that  I  would  have  otherwise  experience  if  I  had  not  attended  the  program
doesn't  seem  as  much  of  a  shock  anymore.  I  learned  that  my  community  is  with  me  and  that  I
can  always  go  to  the  members  of  MEChA  if  I  feel  disconnected  with  my  culture.
The  current  students  running  the  program  were  lovely  and  I  wanted  to  keep  in  touch  with  them.
The  experience  of  being  able  to  stay  overnight  helped
the  food  I  had  at  the  dining  halls  was  so  good!
The  overnight  experience  allowed  me  to  feel  more  comfortable  and  familiar  with  the  campus
and  opened  my  eyes  to  all  of  the  resources  that  UCLA  has  available.
The  overnight  experience  confirmed  my  decision  to  attend  UCLA.    I  learned  so  much  from  the
students  and  alumni,  and  I  wish  the  weekend  was  longer.    It  was  both  informative  and  fun!    The
overnight  experience  gave  me  a  personal  perspective,  whereas  Bruin  Day  showed  me  UCLA
through  straight-‐information.
The  overnight  experience  definitely  contributed  to  my  final  decision  because  I  gained  a  feel  of
unity  within  my  ethnicity.

April Bruin Day 2015, 174

The  overnight  experience  gave  me  a  better  insight  to  how  living  on  campus  will  be.  I  was  very
111   pleased  with  the  living  conditions  and  the  atmosphere  of  all  the  dorms.

The  overnight  experience  through  MEChA  really  motivated  me  into  choosing  to  SIR  to  UCLA.  The
opening  keynote  speaker,  Mr.  Ruben  Elias  Canedo  Sanchez,  gave  an  amazing  and  motivational
speech  that  really  moved  me.  I  was  able  to  resonate  with  some  of  his  experiences  and  was  able
to  relate  to  him  in  a  lot  of  ways.  It  showed  me  that  we  can't  let  ourselves  be  a  minority;  that  we
need  to  stand  up  and  show  everyone  that  we  earned  our  spot  and  truly  deserve  to  be  attending
UCLA.  It  was  a  great  start  to  a  fantastic  weekend.  The  group  bonding  activities  really  brought
everyone  close  together.  I  appreciate  the  hard  that  everyone  put  into  this  event  and  want  to  say
thank  you  for  bringing  us  together  and  giving  everyone  a  chance  to  spark  new  friendships  that
will  hopefully  throughout  our  time  at  UCLA.
The  overnight  experience  was  a  big  contributor  to  my  decision.  Prior  to  Raza  weekend,  I  was  a
little  unsure  of  where  I  would  be  attending.  However,  At  Raza  weekend  it  was  made  clear  that
there  would  be  a  support  system  at  UCLA  and  that  UCLA  was  the  best  school  for  me.  Being  able
to  stay  in  the  dorms  was  also  a  great  experience  that  I  thoroughly  enjoyed
The  Overnight  expirience  created  a  family  and  the  people  who  weere  our  hosts  want  to  help  us
when  we  do  attend.  This  help  is  mostly  in  the  form  of  advice.
The  overnight  program  allowed  me  to  step  outside  my  comfort  zone  and  I  was  welcomed  by
others  who  were  also  stepping  outside  their  comfort  zone.  It  was  nice  to  be  a  part  of  something
that  was  new  to  everyone.
The  people  were  just  all  in  all  amazing.
The  program  gave  me  a  student  perspective  of  UCLA  and  helped  me  to  become  better
acquainted  with  the  campus

They  made  me  feel  empowered  because  they  really  emphasized  what  it  meant  to  be  a  student
of  color  at  UCLA  and  that  only  made  me  want  to  attend  UCLA  and  prove  how  my  presence  can
make  a  difference  on  campus.  They  made  me  feel  like  I  will  not  be  alone  when  I  attend  because
118   there  are  so  many  resources  that  can  help  me  succeed  academically  and  mentally.
This  experience  helped  show  me  what  college  life  was  like  both  during  the  day  and  in  the
evening.  I  was  able  to  see  how  great  the  dorms  are  and  enjoy  the  residential  area  and  food
119   provided  by  UCLA.
120   Without  this  overnight  experience,  it's  unlikely  I  would  have  chosen  to  attend  UCLA.

Appendix N. Overnight Attendee Responses as to How the Overnight Experience Did Not
Positively Contribute to Decision to Attend UCLA
Please tell us more about how the overnight experience contributed to your decision to attend
UCLA
1 It did not.
It helped me get to know more people and learn about the connections that can be made at the
2
school.
It made me fear for my ability to socialize in a large school, however many told me it's about 'finding
3
your nitch'.
4 It was usefull but not a key factor on my decision.
Met interesting new people, knew that I had a 'society' I was a part of, and got a good feel for
5
campus.
The hosts have an extreme influence on the overnight experience so I suggest clubs choose very
6
carefully when picking hosts. The wrong hosts could easily dissuade an admit.
The overnight experience made me reconsider my other options because the student body may not
7
be the best fit for me personally.
