Ken was recommended to us by a mutual acquaintance. The list of modifications we wanted

to the house was long and involved We were living in the house while it was being renovated and he made sure that our privacy was maintained and we were disturbed as little as
possible while the work was carried out. Whenever we had concerns he was quick to respond
and take action where it was needed. We have no hesitation in recommending him for any
building project you may be considering you can be sure he will approach the job with the
highest integrity and his word will be his bond.

Can you
see how
your
business
would
benet from
having a website?
Having a website will support every other form of
advertising you do. It will help build your brand.
Your website is online 24/7, so customers arent

current sales, specialty items or services, testimonials
& reviews...
Your website can answer all the questions that youd
rather not pay someone to answer ~ and face it, these
days customers dont want to talk to you until they
are ready. They want to nd those answers quickly
and easily for themselves, online, while they ponder
the benets of the service or merchandise they wish
to purchase.
A website will drive more customers to your physical
location. If you arent online, you may not be
considered as a purchase point.
Today it is often the appearance, ease of use and professionalism displayed by your website that will help a
customer decide between you and your competition.

Celebrate June 21

This year marks the 20th anniversary of the official

proclamation to designate June 21 as National Aboriginal Day. It is a day where the Indigenous communities
and rest of Canadian society can celebrate the incredible
culture and wisdom First Nations people have preserved
despite the impact of colonialism.
The original people of this land are resilient and have
withstood the indignities of Residential Schools, missing
women, racism and marginalization. Federal and provincial governments need to act on the Truth and Reconciliation Report recommendations made last year to
expedite the healing process between our nations.

Each of us has a positive role to play in that healing process. On Tuesday, June 21, join local celebrations organized by indigenous people of the area. On June 21, send
a message to the government to remind them of their
promises in response to the Truth and Reconciliation
Report. For those who care about the environment and
oppose pipelines show your support for first nations
people who are leading the fight to protect our water.
The Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW)
Castlegar Local and the West Kootenay Labour Council
have endorsed the Yinka-Dene alliance to save the Fraser River. On June 21 we can stand together and build a
future of respect and solidarity.

NELSON
520-C Falls Street (above Savoy Bowling lanes)

Carol Ann Neil (nee Palmer) passed away after a

lengthy illness on April 27, 2016 in Ross Spur with
family by her side. Carol, the oldest of 7 children,
was predeceased by her son Robert Timothy Sturney,
mother Ella Palmer and father Sidney Palmer, brothers
Sidney and Jerry Palmer, and sister Fern Hunter. She is
survived by her daughter Lori Sturney (Pete Warland),
grandson Brandon Sturney (Kim Martin), sister Ivy
Hrisook, brothers George (Nancy) and Tim Palmer,
and many many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Carol was born in Vancouver August 23, 1945. Shortly
after, the family moved up north and lived in Whitehorse and Mayo. When she was around the age of 12,
the family moved to Queens Bay, and a few years later
to Blewett. 1969 saw a move to Gold River and in 1974
the family moved on to Duncan. From there it was

back to Nelson for a year. The following year she lived

in the Lower Mainland, then moved on to Cranbrook
in 1976 where she lived until the mid-80s. Howser was
home for quite a few years, then after a few short hops
she finally found her Shangri-La in Ross Spur in the
late 90s where she lived until she left us.
Carol was such a kind soul and so full of compassion.
She spent her life caring for so many people. Even
though her heart was crushed with the loss of her
son in 1980 she still continued to look after everyone
around her. Mom left a legacy of kindness and compassion. She is finally free from the pain that she endured
for so many years. It is so hard to see her go but harder
to watch her suffer.
The celebration of life will be August 27th at her home.
In lieu of flowers please donate to the SPCA.

Mark your calendars! Show the world you care about

ending elder abuse and neglect by wearing something purple on June 15. Nelson, East Shore, Kaslo and Salmo Community Response Networks of BC and the Nelson and Area
Elder Abuse Prevention Program announce the 11th annual
World Elder Abuse Awareness Day on Wednesday, June 15.
The BC Ministry of Health estimates that between
4-10% of BC seniors will experience some form of financial, physical, emotional or sexual abuse. This estimate is
low since elder abuse if often not reported.
Financial abuse is the most common form of elder abuse.
The ways in which seniors are victimized keep changing.
Electronic banking, misuse of PIN#s, internet phishing
and related online abuse is much more widespread.
Since elder abuse can often be invisible, citizens have a
role to play by keeping their minds, eyes and ears open
to possible abuse. Vigilance is important as frequently a
senior will not report abuse. Abusers are often someone
they trust, depend upon or a family member. Involved
and caring communities make a critical difference. Find
out more by attending any of the activities planned to
mark World Elder Abuse Awareness Day.
Nelson Wednesday, June 15: Nelson Walmart mall

and District Credit Union and Canadian Imperial Bank
of Commerce: Information and conversation from 10 am

service organization accepted

Celebrate June 21

The original people of this land are resilient and have

withstood the indignities of Residential Schools, missing
women, racism and marginalization. Federal and provincial governments need to act on the Truth and Reconciliation Report recommendations made last year to expedite
the healing process between our nations.
On Tuesday, June 21, join local celebrations organized
by indigenous people of the area. On June 21, send a message to the government to remind them of their promises
in response to the Truth and Reconciliation Report. For
those who care about the environment and oppose pipelines show your support for first nations people who are
leading the fight to protect our water.

Violet Florence Turner

Violet Florence Turner, nee Chesney, died Friday, March 25,
2016, from surgical complications. Mom joins her beloved Alec
who died in June of 2014. We miss them.
Violet, known as Tootsie to her siblings, and Vie to her many
friends, was born in 1926 on land the family was farming near
Waldron, Saskatchewan. She was one of the many children of
Hermina and Ben Chesney.
Moms stories of life on the farm were full of laughter, sorrow,
and grief: geese that couldnt walk after browsing the poppy patch,
icicles on the horses nose determining if there was to be school
that day, a barn burning, the loss of animals, her brother stealing
the raisins from her pudding, her mother dusting the stair with a
goose wing, her mother making Rtes. We were enthralled.
After World War II Mom came to BC with some sisters on a
fruit picking adventure near Mission. That summer she met Able
Seaman Alec Turner; they married December 1948, and relocated to Alecs home town of Rossland, BC. After Dad secured a
position with the federal government Mom made a new home for
the growing family in Waneta, BC. The couple had three daughters: Danita, Dawn and Diane. In 1955 the family moved again to
Nelway, BC where Dad continued his work with Customs. From
1966 to 2007 Vie and Alec made Salmo, BC home. For the past 9
years Mom and Dad lived in Ashcroft, BC.
Moms early experiences of necessary cooperation in farming
communities, and the ecological and economic disaster of the
Dirty Thirties informed her humanitarian values. She was profoundly influenced by the family discussions of the 1932 Regina
Convention that delivered the Regina Manifesto and saw the
formation of the Cooperative Commonwealth Federation CCF
party, forerunner to the New Democratic Party. Mom was a
lifetime supporter of the values expressed by the NDP. She contributed thousands of hours to the party as educator, canvasser,
election day driver, and scrutineer. She was an elder Delegate to
the 2011 National Convention that also celebrated the 50th anniversary of the party.
This humanitarian stance fueled Moms acute sense of community responsibility; she was a committed active contributor
to the betterment of the community. She helped build the local
Legion Hall Branch 217, and contributed to the attainment and
administration of the Legion sponsored seniors housing facility
in Salmo. Mom was a tireless worker for the Womens Auxiliary
of the Royal Canadian Legion, assuming executive positions as
Zone Commander, President, Secretary, and Treasurer. In addition to her administrative positions, Mom was an active member
of the Auxiliarys catering team, and made countless sandwiches
for bingo night, prepared, served and cleaned up for hundreds of
wedding reception and other banquet guests. Mom was granted
Lifetime Member status after 45 years of continuous service to
the organization.
Mom also contributed innumerable volunteer hours to the
Salmo Community Golf Course, and Brushy Mountain Ski Hill.
She regularly volunteered as a canvasser for various associations
including: the Multiple Sclerosis Society, the BC Cancer Society,
and the Mothers March of Dimes.
Mom worked both out of the home and in. As a young adult
she was employed as an egg candler, grocery cashier, and sales
representative. Later, she was a regional sales representative for
World Book Encyclopedia, and earned numerous sales awards.
In the late 1960s Mom completed her long desired training as
a cosmetologist, and worked from her home well into her 70s.
Mom was a homemaker; she baked, cooked, kept a garden, and
put up numerous preserves. She was also an experienced crafter,
sewing outfits and home furnishings, knitting Aran sweaters and
Buffalo Wool coats. As a senior, Mom studied and produced sev-

eral exacting pieces of Hawaiian quilting, as well as a feathered

hat band in the Hawaiian tradition. Most recently Mom took up
acrylic painting, and enjoyed success.
Mom was an athlete, and liked to play. Early in their relationship Dad introduced her to golf and downhill skiing. The two of
them could be found at the course, or on the hill, as the season
dictated. One summer Mom made professional status when her
tournament winnings exceeded amateur level. Mom loved being
outdoors. She reveled in picking huckleberries, hunting mushrooms, accompanying Dad grouse hunting, and hiking. Mom
hiked The Bears Hump Trail in Waterton, Alberta, Old Glory
above Rossland, Kokanee Glacier, and the Burgess Shale Deposit
above Field, BC. She also practiced Tai Chi for over 10 years.
Mom had a lovely voice and loved to sing. We know the words
to many of the old time country west tunes like Gold Mine in
the Sky, That Silver Haired Daddy of Mine, Mockingbird Hill
and The Big Corral. On the rare occasion we could induce her
to yodel, we were thrilled. And dance. Mom loved to dance: Two
Step, Old Time Waltz, Foxtrot, Polka, Butterfly and Schottische.
Mom and Dad were wonderful to watch on the dance floor, and
took ballroom dance classes for two years while in Hawaii. Mom
also took Ancient Hula classes when she and Dad wintered there.
Mom said YES! to life. She was always up for fun and adventure. She dressed up each Halloween to greet the wee folk,
attended innumerable costumed affairs at the Salmo Volunteer
Fire Department, spent 10 winters in Hawaii with Dad, practiced
Transcendental Meditation at one time, and at 80 brought home
two Shih Tzu puppies to keep Dad company.
Moms special loves included: her Alec, the grandchildren and
great-grandchild, red roses, Canada geese, newborn calves, the
smell of new mown hay, the song of meadow larks, Canada, the
Maple Leaf, Saskatchewan, and her Shih Tzu pups Hana and
Precious.
We, who continue on, miss and mourn her leaving: her remaining siblings, Evelyn Chesney of Regina, and younger brother,
Earl Chesney, of the Vernon area; her daughters and sons-in-law
Danita and Greg Howard of Ashcroft, BC, Dawn Chesney-Turner
and Grant Stilwell of Surrey, BC, Diane and Eric Cohen of Pahoa,
Hawaii; her grandchildren Darcy and spouse Yona McLean of
Kamloops, Lauren Howard and Matthew Howard of Vancouver
BC, and one great-grandchild Makana McLean of Kamloops BC.

Cars
Als special ride!

Wednesday Evening Cruise!

You have spent hundreds of hours getting your favourite

ride set up for the summer. You plan to go to the car shows
this year, but what about the off show weeks?
Well now you have a destination. The Kaslo Show and
Shine Committee in cooperation with Balfour Auto Body
and Mechanical Ltd. are hosting an informal cruise night
destination, every Wednesday evening in July and August
in the Balfour Auto Body Parking lot. There will be no
prizes as this night is all about checking out rides, swapping lies and learning from fellow gear heads.
If you do choose to come out, please be respectful of the
neighbours and save the burnouts and other hot dogging
for the race track. It will only take one or two incidents
to shut down the entire event and should that happen, it
would be a very sad day indeed.
Hope to see you there!

The Fields Forward Initiative!

Everyone from Yahk to Riondel, come out and celebrate

six months of Fields Forward and your dedication to more
food and better agricultural systems in our region.
All are welcome on Saturday, June 18 from 1 pm to 4 pm
at Centennial Park in Creston. It will be a fun afternoon
and all the working groups will share their highlights and
the big picture of Fields Forward. Food, live music, games,
prizes and surprises. Come on out with your family and
friends, bring your picnic!
Fields Forward is a new initiative in Creston and District that kicked off this past January. At the heart of their
mission is: a landscape enhanced by agriculture; a growing food and farm economy; new local jobs; young people
and families settling in the area and contributing to the
community; more local food on local tables; fewer people
going hungry and a vibrant rural culture.
There are currently nine working groups combining
volunteer efforts and a strong passion for a stronger local
food system striving towards enhancing food, farming
and agriculture in the local area.
This is a great opportunity for everyone to celebrate six
months of success and to learn about all of the great work
Fields Forward is doing for the area!

Black Lives Matter With JC Faulk

Join J.C. Faulk of Baltimore at Caf Langham Inspired

Ideas Speaker Series on Thursday, June 16 at 7 pm for
Black Lives Matter documentary and discussion.
J.C. Faulk has more than 20 years of expertise in organization development, entrepreneurship and community
organizing. Through Full Circle Consulting, he facilitated
large-scale change to help organizations move beyond
obstacles to greater effectiveness, until he founded the
nonprofit An End to Ignorance.
He now facilitates Circles of Voices workshops on
the community level across the United States, which
addresses the pervasive impact of racism with diverse
groups of people. In his upcoming book, Maggies Boy,
he explores race through his personal experiences and by
looking through the larger lens of American culture. It is
here that he unearths his deeply personal experience and
shares his undying connection to others who share a similar fate. J.C. will share personal and professional insights
he has gained along the way of growing up and living in
the USA. This should prove to be a most informative and
lively presentation.
$10 suggested donation at the door at the Langham
Theatre in Kaslo. Youth are free. Contact 250-353-2661 or

Coupon Nutrition Program In Kaslo

The Kaslo Saturday Market and the Kaslo Food Hub

are excited to announce that they are recipients of the BC
Association of Farmers Market Coupon Nutrition Program! This will help more low income residents access
fresh fruits and vegetables from our local growers. This
exciting new initiative will be introduced at the 2016
summer market season beginning on Saturday, June 11!
The BC Farmers Market Nutrition Coupon Program
(FMNCP) is a healthy eating initiative that supports farmers markets and strengthens food security across British
Columbia. Community partner organizations hand out
coupons to lower income families and seniors participating in their food literacy programs. These coupons can
be spent at all BC farmers markets that participate in the
FMNCP to purchase fruits, vegetables, cheese, eggs, nuts,
fish and meat. Each household enrolled in the program
is eligible to receive a minimum of $15/week in coupons.
The coupon program began in 2007 and since then has
spread to 48 BC communities and has reached more than
3,000 households!
Visit the Kaslo Food Hub, www.nklcss.org/home/section/kaslo-food-security-project or the Kaslo Saturday
Market for more information.
