The Position on Residential Smoke Alarms of the South Australian Metropolitan Fire Service (SAMFS), and the Country Fire Service (CFS), applying to all South Australian homes is . . .
“That ALL residential accommodation be fitted with PHOTOELECTRIC smoke alarms . . . Ionization smoke alarms may not operate in time to alert occupants early enough to escape from smouldering fires.”
Australasian Fire and Emergency Service Authorities Council (AFAC) Position on Smoke Alarms in Residential Accommodationʼ 01 June, 2006, page 3, clause 3. (emphasis added)
There are two types (technologies) of smoke alarms, Ionization and Photoelectric. Why is the official position of all South Australian Fire Brigades that ALL homes be fitted with PHOTOELECTRIC (also called ʻopticalʼ) smoke alarms?

Official Position on Smoke Alarms Published: 01 June, 2006
In February 2006, Standards Australia discovered that over 90% of smoke alarms, whether new or old, battery or hard-wired, may not activate until “dangerously high” and “totally unacceptable” levels of smoke.1 Standards Australia Ltd has rewritten Australiaʼs flawed Smoke Alarm Standard (AS3786). However, the corrected Standard has been blocked by the Australian Building Codes Board from adoption into legislation and the truth about the known and DEADLY defects with ionization smoke alarms continues to be withheld from the public and most fire fighters.
A Special Duty of Care
“Fire safety organisations have a Special Duty of Care and therefore must warn t he public of the known, life-threatening limitations of ionization smoke alarms.”

Ionization Smoke Alarms are DEADLY
“Why havenʼt we been told?”
“It is so stunning and so horrifying and itʼs so hard to believe that itʼs something that people just donʼt know.”
“The public (and fire fighters) have been misled into believing that ionization smoke alarms are safe.”
