13th Sunday in Ordinary Time

Called to Freedom
Elijah chooses Elisha to be his successor. (I Kings)
The Spirit calls us to live in freedom. (Gal 5)
Let nothing keep us from following Jesus. (Luke 9)
In today’s Gospel, people
are declaring that they want to
follow Jesus wherever he
goes. Jesus reminds them of
the difficulties in such a vocation.
When Pope Francis was discerning his call to priesthood, he felt that the most
powerful message of Jesus Christ was mercy. The
theme of mercy was illustrated in a homily by St.
Bede: Jesus saw the tax collector through the eyes
of mercy and chose him, saying, “Follow me.”
Those words of invitation spoke to the future pope.
Today the papal motto, Miserando atque eligendo, is about Jesus’ mercy toward sinners. It’s a reference to that moment when Pope Francis found
his vocation to the priesthood when he was 17.
Today the entire church is midway through the
Jubilee Year of Mercy, which our pope has called
forth. Pope Francis invites us to discover our own
deeper faith. He uses these familiar words of invitation: “Follow me.”

Niagara Academy is looking for
Host Families

Can you host a student for a few weeks in the
summer, 1 semester or the school year? Families
are compensated $700 per month or pro rated for
the length of the students stay if shorter then a
month. The families are asked to provide a room,
bed, dresser, 3 meals and snacks a day, transportation to and from school (all of our families carpool
to make this part easier). We are looking for families who can provide a home away from home, a
nurturing stable environment. We are located on
First Ave in Vineland. Contact Rina Villaviencio at
info@niagaraacademy.ca or 905 562 0683

The St. Helen SVDP Conference would like to
thank the parishioners for their generous donations
to our conference. Your poor box donations provide aid for the poor who live within the geographic
area of St. Helen Parish. The cost of housing (rent)
is the major factor that impoverishes our people.

A message from Fr. Bob:
THANK YOU
As I prepare to leave St. Helen’s Parish on June 30th, I wanted to offer my
sincere thanks to each one of you who
have made my stay in this beautiful
part of Ontario so memorable. I am
grateful for the warm welcome that I received some
six months ago and for those of you who helped me
to find my way around the parish and your beautiful
new church. I offer a special thank you to all those
who invited me to their homes for a meal and those
who brought meals for me to enjoy at the rectory. It
clearly takes a village to raise a priest and I am
grateful for the many who offered their services
here at the church or at the rectory in Vineland
when you were asked.
I am thankful for the Catholic Women’s League, the
Knights of Columbus and the Syrian Refugee Committee as well as the Building and Finance Committees that I worked with so closely. It was great fun
to work with Catholic education once again and I
want to thank Principals Ward and Bishop.
My work here at St. Helen’s could not have happened without the tremendous help and support
that I received from the Office Administrator, Aggie
Agnino. Aggie got me through locked doors, helped
me figure out where various places were located
and who people were. She made certain that I had
all that I needed and I can assure you from past experience that this parish is very blessed to have
such a capable and resourceful person assisting
the pastor! Thank you Aggie!
Once again let me thank you and assure you of my
prayers for each one of you. Please remember me
in your prayers and if we meet again please say
hello and as I get older please remind me of your
name and where we met!

Father Bob Colburn, CSSp
