Greetings!
When Winston Churchill
said that 'Healthy citizens
are the greatest asset, any
country can have' he zeroed
in on an often-overlooked
truth. In the highly competitive
environment of todays world talent,
youth, knowledge, technology and other such
factors are upheld as being vital to success
and progress of families, communities,
organisations and nations. Yet few realise that
without the critical ingredient of good health
and fitness, progress in many forms can be
inhibited. That is why we at SIIL place great
value on a healthy lifestyle. Just glance
through this issue of TSE and you
will notice that sports is our theme
for this edition. You will also find
ample evidence of our commitment
to foster and support sport and fitness
in SIIL and the country.
Starting from SIILs total support
and celebration of Qatars national
sports day, which resulted in a range
of sporting events and activities
for our staff and their families,
to SIIL hosting the fencing
tournament at The Gate; to
our sponsorship of Mohamed Abu- Issa,
Champion Quad bike rider, who won first
place at the Abu Dhabi Desert Challenge and
third place at the Sealine Cross Country Rally
in Qatar; to our sponsorship of 'Olympics:
Past & Present' the exhibition recently held
at Al Riwaq in collaboration with the Qatar
Olympic and Sports Museum where we
launched a photography competition under
the theme 'Sports Culture'; SIILs mindset
and the priority we give sports and
fitness just shines through.
Though national sports day
has come and gone, lets hold
on to the spirit of the day and keep
our selves engaged in sports, fitness
and an active, healthy lifestyle. That is
truly a gift you can give yourself, your
family, your career and as Churchill
said your country.
As we wrap up a busy first quarter
and prepare ourselves to build on the early
successes of 2013, reaching greater heights
at work and in life, lets resolve to not just be
committed to sports and physical activity but
also to encourage and promote it. Go ahead take the lead in setting yourself some fitness
related targets, encourage family, friends
and colleagues to join you, organise team
sport events, dont just be a spectator but be
a participant!

Worldwide.

The iconic lifestyle brand Juicy

Couture introduced Couture
La La, a bold new companion
to the Juicy Couture fragrance
originally launched in 2006. The
fragrance was unveiled at Salam
The Gate.
The inspiration for Couture La La comes from
the classic elegance of the original fragrance
while blending in new notes of a modern
nature. As the younger sister to Juicy Couture,
Couture La La is a little bit of punk rock, with
a lot free spirit. Couture La La captures the
essence of femininity and the daring allure of
the unexpected.
Salam Group - Managing Director Mr. Pierre
Khoury was present at the launch together
with Mr. Mahmood Sarwar Khan, Regional
Manager and Mr. Irfanul Haque, Area Manager
of Ghadeer Trading; the distributor of the
fragrance in the region.

In February 2013, Salam Stores expanded

its list of popular international shops by
declaring open Qatars first Rosa Clar
Boutique at the prestigious Gate Mall.
The renowned Bridal Collection and
Eveningwear Designer, now poised and
ready to serve Qatars fashion industry,

of The Gate Mall.

The PUIG group takes on the lead in

innovating training techniques for
its Fragrance Advisors and retail
partners with the recent outdoor
event held at Intercontinental Hotel
Doha on March 14, 2013.
Introducing the brands new fragrances in an garden set-up, PUIG brought
the inspiration of these fragrances so FAs will have the feel and experience
relating not only to the sense of smell which is primary in perfumes, but also
the ambience where these perfumes are derived and aimed to communicate.

The step beyond the conventional classroom-type training was encouraged

by Salam-PUIG Regional Manager Ms. Effat Samir who believes that this
new approach to training will be an edge to retain the brands current market
leadership through its promoters and FAs.

NEWS

Truly, we are looking forward to the next training session of PUIG that will take
us anywhere with their ingenuity to make brilliant concepts to reality.

Salam Stores and Pelikan Middle East is proud to

giving to a new level with a premium writing instrument
collection now available at Al Salam Stores Wafi Mall.
Porsche Design premium pens have offered collectors
and enthusiasts an exciting range to choose from.
Porsche Design is a German Trade Mark launched in 1972
by Mr. Ferdinand Alexander Porsche. The brand stresses
on products with technical and everlasting design value.
In keeping with that each and every product in its line
of premium writing instruments is finalised at Porsche
Design Studio, in Zell am See, Austria. Salam Stores is
proud to carry the Porsche Design collection.

The opening took place in the company

of Her Excellency Mrs Carmen De La
Pea, Ambassador of Spain; Ms. Rosa
Clar, the creator and chief designer of
the brand; Mr Issa Abu Issa, Chairman
and Chief Executive Officer of Salam
International; Mr Pierre Khoury,
Managing Director of Salam Stores;
many VIPs and members of the media.
In keeping with the central theme
of Rosa Clar, the ambience of the
ceremony reflected the joy of weddings.
A majority of the dcor was completed in
white and black. Much to the delight of
those present, instead of the customary
cutting of a ribbon, the boutique was
declared open by a ceremonial cutting
of a wedding cake, thereby continuing to
uphold the spirit of weddings.
To coincide with the opening Ms. Rosa
Clar unveiled her latest collection in
Doha. Invitees and guests were treated
to a tour of the boutique and were among
the first to see the new collection, which
is now available in-store.
Commenting on the occasion, Ms. Rosa
Clar said she was delighted to open her
boutique in Qatar. She mentioned that
she has always possessed an interest in

the Gulf Region and especially in Qatar,

since the country has risen today to be a
leading name in the fashion world, due
to pride of place being given to fashion
designing.
Managing Director of Salam Stores
Pierre Khoury welcomed Ms. Rosa Clar
and other guests saying, Salam Stores
is proud as always, to be the first to bring
in yet another of the worlds leading
fashion designers and introduce them
to Qatar. With its growing significance
in the luxury sphere, Qatar is a nation
where elegance and fine taste are valued
commodities. The presence of this new
Rosa Clar boutique at The Gate will
enhance the shopping experience at the
mall. We have no doubt that the boutique
will become one of the most important
destinations for every bride and every
elegant lady who looks to stand out in
a crowd.
Today the Rosa Clar Group has over
100 shops and over 1500 multiple brand
points of sale spread across 47 countries

Philippines, Mexico, United States of
America, Turkey, Bahrain, KSA, Kuwait

programme, held under the theme

YOU Are The Difference. The training
took place from the 4th to the 5th
of March 2013. The idea behind the
programme was to equip the new sales
staff and encourage them to continually
improve customer service. The training
was facilitated by Mr. Ghaiath Samier
Ismael, Store Manager of Salam
Stores at Wafi Mall.

Salam Stores was happy to serve Mr. Amr Moussa as he visited our Corneliani Shop

General of the Arab League Council and a contender at the last presidential
elections of Egypt.

Mr. Hussam AbdulSalam Abu Issa

UNITY DIVERSIFIED IS
STRENGTH MULTIPLIED
Before introducing our five sectors to you,
Id like to take a brief tour of our recent
history, which yields clues to the posturing
that has brought us to our current position
of strength not just in Qatar but also in the
region.
In the year 2004, we courageously
crafted a new corporate strategy, which
articulated the type of corporation we
are. This strategy also served to clearly
demarcate our mode of businesses along
with our operations and investments. SIIL
backed up this approach with a resilient
corporate structure, which was optimally
designed to deliver the chosen strategy.
In 2004, Salams strategy for our
corporate centre was to evolve into
becoming a strategic architect providing
tactical level guidelines to our operating
businesses while perceptively monitoring
performances through corporate KPIs.
Being an organisation that is resolutely
committed to continuous growth we strove
to balance our hunger for growth with
critically analysing our own performance.
As a result of this finely balanced inwardly
searching/outwardly
focused
mindset, we zeroed in on a key finding at an
operational level. We made a discovery
that a need existed to cluster SIILs many
business units into a consolidated larger
structure. This signaled the birth of SIILs
Divisions.

The first round of the clustering exercise

undertaken by us was based on common
products or services, an addressable
market, similar cost structures and
industries. In 2004, the clustering resulted
in 9 divisions, which worked together for
more than 7 years. The main objective of
these divisions was to further consolidate
operations in fewer clusters that would
be more in line with SIILs core business
definition.
In 2010, the need for a more focused
operation was evident based on Qatars
burgeoning market requirements, fast
paced global changes, which called for
more competencies and capabilities in
delivering larger size projects. At this
point we embarked on a 2nd wave of
operational clustering, creating 4 new
and much broader sectors based on the
field they addressed. The four sectors
were Contracting, Industry and Energy,
Technology, Luxury Retail and Hospitality.
True to our inexhaustible nature and
entrepreneurial ambitions, in 2012, on the
cusp of completing our 60th year, SIIL
underwent its final round of sectorisation,
thereby bringing out five distinct fields
of focus. As your chairman and CEO, I
strongly believe these five sectors astutely
position us to maximise opportunities for
all SIIL companies. These five sectors
being - Salam Contracting, Salam Energy

& Industry, Salam Technology, Salam

Retail, Distribution & Hospitality and Real
Estate Salam Bounian.
The aforementioned processes of
sectorisation have not only provided SIIL
with critical mass, leverage of capabilities
and potential cost optimisation but
they have also given SIIL an undeniable
enhancement of competitiveness in the
market. Today, I can join all of you, the
SIIL team and proudly say that as a result
of these bold moves, SIIL companies now
work not only as independent entities
but also as one; winning even greater
trust and confidence, displaying even
higher levels of efficiency and capability,
capturing larger proportions of the market
while judiciously positioning us to be in
perfect position to make quantum leaps of
growth to partner Qatar in its imminently
expected, massive boom.

The team sailed off from Dubai Marina Yacht Club. An exclusive 86 foot yacht was
dedicated for the purpose. On board were 40 employees who indulged in swimming,
fishing, and other leisurely activities. A delicious buffet was also part of the afternoons
highlights with a large selection of food and beverages. The event was designed to
bring the staff members together and build bridges between the different stores
and departments. Due to the overwhelming success of the event, Salam UAE will
endeavour to grow and deliver more staff get-togethers within the near future.

Heres a peek at our beautiful new office and showroom!

Friends and extended Salam family, please take note of our
new address!

I would also like to add that the

inspiration behind the final sectorisation
was influenced in no small measure
by Qatars own ambitions and its 2030
vision. With Qatars expansion of business
opportunities and the high potential
shown in many Middle Eastern markets,
SIILs evolution reflects our inherent
industriousness and our proven spirit
of discernment summarised well in our
2013 corporate theme diversity unified is
strength multiplied.

With this in mind, let me invite each and every one of you
to be a true ambassador of SIIL, celebrating our diversity,
displayed in the myriad of skills and competencies among
us while multiplying our strength by working together, when
called for, as ONE!

On the 11th of March 2013 Salam staff from Dubai Mall Stores (Kido, Escada & Corneliani)
and Mirdif Kido staff, supervisors and managers had their Teambuilding event on a
Luxury Yacht. Those gathered enjoyed an afternoon cruise. The imaginative event was
organised by Ms. Sanam Khan Store Manager, Dubai Mall & Mirdif Kido.

When people talk about

SIIL, something that gets
mentioned often is our
capacity to continuously
evolve. I, for one, believe
that one of the secrets
behind SIILs success has
been our tremendous
power for reinvention. SIIL
has a reputation for boldly
subjecting ourselves to
processes that keep pace with
changing market realities
while intuitively aligning
with Qatars growth and its
ambitions. Many of you might
already be aware that true
to our reputation we recently
underwent a sectorisation
process.

Left to right - Mr. Nawras Kanafani, Mr. Alberto Doroin, Mr. Amr Moussa & Mr. Nart Izhak.

When Lekhwiya, Qatars Internal Security Force

needed a futuristic stadium built, they looked for
partners they can trust. We are delighted that our Gulf
Steel and Engineering is among them.

This participation was part of the companys corporate social responsibility

programme, and resulted in an impressive 60 blood donations from amongst
Salams employees and visitors. The donors praised Salams initiative and
commented that it would save many lives, especially among people who suffer
from blood diseases or need blood during surgery.
Mr. AbdulSalam Abu Issa, Deputy Chief Operating Officer, Salam International:
This blood donation campaign is an important part of SIILs Corporate Social
Responsibility strategy. It reflects our commitment to social awareness and
the encouragement of welfare activities. SIIL will always support any initiative
that is beneficial to our society. The companys responsibility is not just to make
money, but to be a big part of Qatari society. We seek to use all means at our
disposal to develop and create opportunities and conditions for all members
of society, in line with the Qatar National Vision 2030. Salam Internationals
social initiatives are not limited to the medical or health fields. The company is
eager to participate in any kind of activities that really make a difference.

the challenge and delivered some exceptional

work. Another aspect was though the project
was awarded to us is May 2012, we managed
to start work only in July due to some design
changes the client was carrying out. That
naturally cut into our time. However, that fact
not withstanding we completed the project in
six short months. Additionally, our team was
coordinating between two countries, in totally
different time zones as the design consultant

project we worked hand in hand with the contractor and the designers. Making our own
adjustments, offering advice when required
and adding value that way to the whole partnership and process.

The Lekhwiya Stadium has a developed area

of 700,000 m2 with its football stadium carrying a 15,000 m2 built up area. The football
stadium is designed to seat 10,000 fans.
The stadium also has a multi-purpose hall
which hosts an aquatic center, a multigame
space and a 75 Room Hotel. 4 training fields
and a car park stand on the property, which
is landscaped. The stadium was officially
inaugurated on February 15, 2013 with the
first match taking place in the stadium being
a Qatar Stars League fixture against Al Khor.

We utilised the highest available technologies for the work. Our large capacity profile
bending machine and our 3D profile-cutting
machine really gave us an advantage. Our
teams worked round the clock and our efforts
paid off. Today, we have a contracting partner
and a client who is happy with our work and
staff who got many opportunities to grow in
and display their skills through this project.
Moreover, we have given Qatar an iconic
stadium that sports fans can truly enjoy. We
are proud of all of this.

TSE The work is beautiful. Tell us some of
your biggest challenges in this project.
AB The design itself demanded a high degree of skill to be employed in the fabrication

Alu Nasa wins Project from

Qatar Olympic Committee

Our Alu Nasa was picked by Qatar Olympic
Committee to handle the external cladding
work of an Olympic City Project at Lusail.
Qatars Olympic City is located close to the International Motor Sports track
and it is part of the world-class, sports infrastructure being built in line with
Qatar becoming the leading sports hub of the Region.
The overall project involves building a 19,132-seater multi-purpose hall with
16,432 fixed and 2,700 retractable seats for basketball, volleyball and handball
games. It will have a basement and five above-ground levels, with a mezzanine between the ground and the first floor. The built-up area will cover
107,650 square metres (sq m).
The very first international event scheduled for the Multi Purpose hall is the
Mens World Handball Championship scheduled for January 2015. The external
cladding work that Alu Nasa has undertaken for the walls and roof of the hall
include glass panels, aluminium sandwich panels, louvers, operable panels
inclusive of a fully enclosed, structurally sound, weather-tight fully unitised
skin work system. Each of the aforementioned being well within Alu Nasas
proven competencies, the company immediately undertook the challenge of
delivering a superior solution, that has been well received.

Executives and Managers
from various countries in
the region recently gathered to further strengthen
its foundation through the
meeting of minds behind
the companys success over
the years.

On top of the agenda was the anticipated

corporate re-structuring to realign both
the companys strengths and weaknesses
to adapt to the ever-changing market in
the region and overcome challenges to
maintain its current industry position and
future growth.
We have the tools to reach this goal. We
are already a market leader in terms of
international brand management and
representation. We have achieved this
through our transparency with our suppliers and partners, noted Mr. Pierre

Khoury, Salam Group Managing Director.

At present, Salam Stores has the distribution rights of the majority of worldrenowned, luxury brands in fashion, cosmetics, photography, household items
and the list goes on. This alone, according to Mr. Khoury is enough to put Salam
on the map as a leader in retail.
We are innovators. We continuously
train people to be their best. We encourage staff to step up in their mundane
tasks and keep up with the fast paced
environment, added Mr. Khoury recog-

nising the importance of the people as

the key in the overall achievements of
the company. Under this new direction,
according to Mr. Khoury, excellent performance at the workplace will be distinguished and rewarded. The room for
improvements are vast with opportunities

The event formed the third round of the

Race days extended from April 22nd to

saying "It's always great to have a podium
finish on home soil. I really enjoyed the
race and I am glad that I finished in the
top three. This year we raced on plenty of
new tracks in comparison to 2012. So as
riders we had the excitement of more offroad sections and more tricky navigation.
It was a good race."

The Abu Dhabi Desert Challenge, is

known as one of the worlds most
prestigious international cross country

which Mohamed Abu-Issa raced, reached
deep into the Liwa desert covering
towering dunes and desert plains with
the route crossing some of the most
demanding landscapes on earth, testing
drivers, riders, and machinery to the
limit. Since its launch in 1991, the Desert
Challenge has produced some of the
most dramatic action in international
cross country rallying, and has brought
the best out of many of the worlds top
drivers and riders.

The champion commented "It feels great

to finish and to win the quads. My air

Professor
Thomas Astebro

Many eyes are on Qatar as the country makes giant strides in business.
Other nations, businesses, professionals and students are placing
Qatar under their microscopes in order to study the growth dynamics
that are at work in the country. With successful businesses often
learning from each other the country has recognised the need, to
document its experiences. Her Highness Sheikha Moza bint Nasser
graciously provided HEC Paris in Qatar with the funds to develop case
studies on unique businesses around the country.
The task was undertaken by Professors
Antoine Hyafil and Laoucine Kerbache,
Dean of HEC Paris in Qatar. SIIL is
delighted that we are among the
companies being studied and our story
is among those being recorded in Qatar.
The case study on Salam International
is being written by Professor Thomas
Astebro, with assistance from Doctoral
candidate Wendy Bradley. SIILs case
study will focus on and highlight the
successes and challenges faced by a
family business that has transformed
into a publicly quoted company.

Ms
Wendy Bradley

Wendy Bradley is currently conducting

a series of interviews and documenting
the transformation process of SIIL
capturing how SIILs business orientation

and culture changed after the IPO in

2002 and 2005. She is also focusing on
the changes that took place at SIIL in
2010 with our massive restructuring
programme with specific reference
to Salam's organisational changes
affecting our company's vision, mission
and corporate strategy.
The challenges faced by us in the rollout of the structural changes for the IPO
and how we have moved forward will

that has led to our latest sectorisation

SIIL contributed to Qatar

Career Fair by hosting a
very special session focused
on Womens Leadership.
SIIL invited Joe Folkman
who delivered a lecture at
Qatar National Convention
Centre. Joe Folkman is
co-founder and President
of Zenger Folkman, a
consulting company that
utilises evidence-driven,
strengths-based methods
to improve organisations
and the people within them.
SIILs Extraordinary Leaders
programme is also run by
members of Joes team.

As a respected authority on assessment and change, and an

acclaimed keynote speaker at conferences and seminars the
world over, SIIL was convinced that Joe would add value to youth
participating at the Qatar Career Fair 2013.
Speaking on the theme of Women in Leadership, Joe used his
extensive expertise as a renowned psychometrician and shared
some astounding data with the animated audience who interacted
with him during his lecture.
Joe brought into play his 30 plus years of experience, consulting
with some of the world's most prestigious and successful
organisations and challenged the audience to think within the
context of Qatars growing leadership scene.
His presentation included fascinating data which had been
gathered by Zenger Folkman, using unique measurement tools
utilizing a database comprised of over a half million assessments
on almost 50,000 leaders.
His lecture offered invaluable insight to the audience on how
gender impacts leadership, the patterns that emerge, the

challenges, strengths and weaknesses of male and female

leadership.
Audience members, including the men who were part of the
lecture were pleasantly surprised that women outscore men in
leadership effectiveness. The primary reason Jo suggested is that
accepted leadership styles have changed over the years. While
the command-and-control style once dominated the business
world, more feminine attributes like collaboration tend to fit
todays business model better.
Commenting on SIIL and the approach the company is taking on
the one hand to invest in its managers and to look outwards and
contribute to the community through initiatives such as the career
fair, Joe said, I believe SIIL has a forward thinking mindset. This
company truly gets it. They know the value of human resources
and the difference great leadership can bring."
"SIIL is not afraid to venture out and transform themselves and
you can see the results of that mindset in their growth. SIIL has
enjoyed healthy growth and one of the reasons behind their
success is because they are unafraid to invest in people.

the region. Efforts are being made to

get SIILs Case Study published within
the Harvard Business Review and other
clearing houses. In addition, the study
will be used by students at HEC in the
various MBA and Executive programs at
the Qatar and Paris campuses.
Commenting on her role Wendy says,
Companies in emerging markets, and
the particular opportunities and threats
they face, are understudied. Yet, these
companies make a huge contribution to
the world economy as a whole. As such,
we are excited to bring attention to Salam
International, and we believe students,
businessmen, and even politicians have
something to learn from Salam's past
successes and the challenges it still
faces for the future.

discerningly look outward to locate and bring
in top, new talent in line with our ambitions.

from a unique cross-training approach to leadership

development. They have been trained to understand how
extraordinary leaders can double profits. Since the programme has a strong feedback mechanism it utilises a
360-degree feedback system to identify key strengths of
managers and further, it helps create an action-oriented
development plan that facilitates goal setting and follow
through. SIILs managers report that through the valued
programme, they are learning to apply leadership development in daily, on-the-job activities.
In order to give the programme a self-sustaining element,
SIIL has picked facilitators and coaches from among
those being trained. These facilitators and coaches
receive additional training and are thereby equipped to
continue the programme in-house at SIIL. So far SIIL
has held a series of Extraordinary leader workshops. We
are also proud to announce that now we have facilitators
and coaches in our midst. The Chief Operating Officer
of Zenger Folkman Bob Sherwin was in Qatar in February 2013 to conduct the training for our facilitator and
coaches.

Optical Illusions

TO ENJOY!

Crossword:

Salam Companies
&

'

(
)

This 3D optical illusion was created by

graphic artist Robert Ausbourne. As you
can see it is designed to look like a copper
ring which has been highlighted on a
black background. If you turn the image
over in your mind the shape becomes
an impossible circle. Focus on the black
shading in the center of this image and you
will see what we mean.

This picture has been made to

resemble the face of a man by
cleverly using images of a number
of different zoo animals. We believe
there are twenty eight to thirty
animals in this image, including a
bear, kangaroo, horse, rabbit, tiger,
elephant, monkey and a snake.
Some are pretty obvious to spot
while others are more hidden and
you will need to look more closely to
find them. Good luck!
