Top Reasons to learn

German
1. To Succeed In School:
Students who take German
score higher on college
acceptance tests (ACT/SAT)
than other students.
2. Communication: Over
130 million people speak
German as their native
language. Twice as many
people speak German in
Europe than any other
language.
3. To learn your own
language better: German
and English are both
Germanic languages. They
share many words and
grammar characteristics.
4. To get a job in the US:
German is very important for
business. Many American
companies are owned by or
have ties to German
companies. Most of the firms
name German as the 2nd
language they would like
employees to know.
5. To get a job globally:
Germany has one of the
worlds largest economies and
highest standards of living on
Earth.
6. To work in tourism:
Germans are the most
traveled people in the world.
You will find German tourists
everywhere. Many American
tourists go to Germanspeaking countries, which are
some of the most beautiful

About this class

As the best way to learn a language is by speaking and
hearing it, LPHS German classes will be taught mainly in
German. The expectation is also that the students will also
communicate in German at their skill level rather than
English!
The language classes at LPHS will follow the state and national world language
standards, including the 5 Cs: Communication, Cultures, Connections,
Comparisons, and Communities, and work within the modalities of
Interpersonal, Interpretive, and Presentational Communication. All courses are
based on achieving levels of proficiency in ability to communicate (what you can
do with a language).
German 1 (Novice-Mid proficiency level)
Students communicate using memorized words and phrases to talk about familiar
topics related to school, home, and the community. They start to create
sentences of their own on familiar topics.
German 2 (Novice-High proficiency level)
Students communicate using words, lists, and simple sentences to ask and
answer questions, to handle simple situations related to everyday life, and to talk
about other subjects. They can create their own sentences with the language, but
not consistently. They can handle short social interactions using phrases and
simple sentences, but may need help or visuals to keep the conversation going.
German 3 (Intermediate-Low proficiency level)
Students communicate both written and spoken by using simple sentences to ask
and answer questions. They can handle simple situations related to everyday
life, and talk about subject matter studied in other classes. They consistently use
self-created sentences and occasionally short paragraphs, not merely memorized
words and phrases.
German 4/AP (Intermediate-Mid proficiency level)
Speakers at this level are independent communicators. They are consistently able
to create their own meaning spontaneously in sentence-level discourse and can
sustain discourse at that level over several turns. They can talk about familiar
topics, such as family, interests, and academic subjects. They can talk about
other people also, such as friends or family members. They have enough control
of grammar to talk about events and routines in the present and fairly
comfortably in the past tense.

Participation and Proficiency

Because our goal is proficiency, participation is crucial. Students can expect inclass tasks and assignments. All homework will be due the following class
period before the bell rings. Because I want students to succeed, I will accept
late work up to 80%. On occasion, specific sections of students assessments

will be corrected by other

class.

Assessments
Students can expect assessments throughout the school year. I allow retakes for
assessments because I want students to succeed! On occasion, specific sections of
students assessments will be corrected by other students in class.

Attendance and Absences

Missing class does not only involve missing assignments, but missing the chance
to be exposed to being immersed in the German language, which improves your
ability to speak it and comprehend it. These experiences are generally not
possible to make up outside of class.
Students who are absent are responsible to pick up their own missed work, notes,
and assignments from the class folder or via my website, and then complete the
missing work in a timely manner after they return to class.

Text Reminders and

Communication
Text Reminders! I will be sending text reminders to
parents and students prior to quizzes, tests, and major
assignments via http://remind.com.
If you would like to received these updates and
announcements, please visit the remind.com link on
my class website.

Evaluation
Grades will be based on the following categories of learning:
1. Proficiency (60%)
2. Participation (40%)

Extra Credit
Because I want students to
concentrate on things that will
improve their ability to communicate
in the German language, I choose not
to allow extra credit. Instead, I will
allow students to retake any
assessment or turn in late work up to
80%.

A letter grade is received at the end of each term based on the

percentage of points the student has earned of the total possible
according to the following scale:
94-100 A
80-82 B65-69 D+
90-93 A77-79 C+
