Like Lambs Among Wolves

Gods comforting, maternal words to those returning
to Jerusalem. (Isaiah)
Salvation through the cross is everything. (Galatians)
The 72 disciples are sent to preach about the kingdom. (Luke)
In todays gospel, Jesus
has empowered and sent his
72 followers out to proclaim
the good news.
Think of all the catechists
serving in parishes today.
The challenge is great, but
so is the need. In some parts
of our world, being a catechist or a lay minister of the word is dangerous business. The 1968 Latin American bishops meeting in
Medellin, Colombia, sent forth the word that God had
a special love for the poor. As this message spread,
many catechists took their lives into their hands to
teach it. They must have taken comfort in the words
of a prayer by Bishop Ken Untener: We are workers,
not master builders; ministers, not messiahs. We are
prophets of a future not our own.

Knowing and Doing

Moses teaches us to be faithful to Gods commandments. (Deuteronomy)
Pauls cosmic hymn to Christ. (Colossians)
The Good Samaritan. (Luke)
The story of the generosity
of the Good Samaritan is a
real challenge for most of us.
Living our lives here on Earth
is a full-time job, specially if
we are thinking about
heaven. We may feel that we
dont have the time, energy
or money to help strangers,
even though the commandments teach us to love
our neighbour as we love ourselves. But if we skip
helping our neighbour, we might actually be passing God by.
The joke goes like this. When a derelict showed
up in church one Sunday morning in rumpled, dirty
clothes, he was clearly outof-place, and everyone
avoided him. At the end of the service, the pastor
took the man aside, scolded him gently and suggested that he ask God the proper way to dress
when coming to church. I did, the man said, but
God said he didnt know because hed never been
here before.

Holy Hospitality
Abraham and Sarahs guests. (Genesis)
Paul shares in Christs own suffering. (Colossians)
Mary and Martha welcome Jesus. (Luke)
There is a quality of sacred
in many of our kitchens. Nothing compares to Moms greenbean casserole or pecan pie.
In todays gospel, Martha is
preparing her wonderful gift to
Jesus. It is
going to be a wonderful meal,
and Martha alone can take
pride in creating it.
Mary is providing her wonderful gift to Jesus. She
is being the good listener, allowing Jesus to talk.
Martha gets jealous when their conversation bursts
into laughter and evinces deeper understanding.
Mary and Jesus are clearly having a good time.
Martha is stuck in the kitchen.
Each of us has gifts to offer. We cannot be all
things to all people. Ours is to do what we can. We
are each called to bring our gift, whatever it may be,
and let it shine before God.

Teach Me To Pray
Abraham negotiates with God. (Genesis)
We have been brought to life with Christ.
Jesus teachings about persistent prayer. (Luke)

T.S. Eliot once wrote:

Only those who will risk going too far can possibly find
out how far one can go.
Todays first reading and
gospel are about persistence -- about Gods invitation to keep on asking for
his help. We are called to
prayer. Luke says: For
everyone who asks receives, and everyone who
searches finds, and for everyone who knocks, the
door will be opened.
Prudence is different from caution. Sometimes we
should keep trying even when the risk is great. Prudence will tell us when persistence is the right decision. Abraham showed almost brazen persistence
in arguing with God over the fate of the two doomed
cities. But compassion was his objective, and, as
he discovered, Gods compassion is limitless
