A. Will the rocket fly farther if there is less than 250 milliliters of water in the 2 Liter?
B. If there is less than 250 milliliters in the 2 liter then the rocket will fly farther because there will
be less weight holding the rocket back.
C.

Distance the Rocket Flies Depends on the Weight of the Rocket

Amount of Water Distance flown Average Distance

100 20 18 13 17
500 60 37 24 40.33
1000 60 54 54 56
750 77 49 63

D. List 5 controlled variables.

- 75 psi
- same size bottles
- same substance in the bottles
- same shape of wings
- same amount of wings
E. List the materials needed for the experiment.
2 Liter, 20 oz, card board, rulers, scissors, water, duct tape, launcher,
F. Write out a step by step procedure for carrying out the experiment.
First step to making your rocket is getting a 2 liter and a 20 oz. Then take the 20 oz and use duct
tape to tape it to the bottom of the 2 liter. Tape the the bottom of the 20 oz to the bottom of the 2
liter. Then cut out wings that are 20 cm X 15 cm and tape those 10 cm from the top of the bottle.
Tape those about 6 cm apart, you will need 3 of those wings. Once those are all put together you
then are almost ready to launch. To do this experiment you add 250 ml of water into the 2 liter and
125 ml of water in the 20 oz. Since our dependent variable is the amount of water, this amount will
change throughout the experiment. The launcher is set up outside in an area that is non harmful to
anyone or anything. You slide the bottle onto the launcher where the air will be added into it. Make
sure the bottle is completely down onto the lip and then clamp it in. Turn on the air and then
without waiting yell launch and pull the string that will let the bottle go flying into the air.
G. Graph your data on Excel.

H. Write a conclusion.
1. Does your data support your hypothesis? Why or why not? (Describe by referring to your
data! Be sure you talk about your data and graph.)
2. What changes would you make if you did the experiment again and why? (Be specific to the
individual experiment…NOT “Be more accurate” “Do more trials”)

Conclusion:

In conclusion to shooting rockets with a varying weight, about 750 flies the best. 1000 is a bit too much
and 500 could use a little more. We did have interference with our data and those numbers are
highlighted in the data table above. That day we had extreme winds pushing the rockets back towards
the launching point. Our data does not support our hypothesis, in our hypothesis we stated that with
less water the rocket would fly farther but as the data proves with just the right amount of water, more
than 250 and less than 1000, it will fly farther. If we had to make changes it would be taking some data
on a different day because it greatly affected our data and graphs.
