Michael Ian Black

By Rebecca Strassberg

Tell us about your experience on

The Jim Gaffigan Show. Its been
fun. Its been very Its not lowpressure, but thats how it feels. It
feels like were just going and enjoying
ourselves every day. I dont feel the
same burden I do when Im producing
something or writing something. I love
just being an actor on set and being
responsible for hitting my marks,
saying my words, and making my
faces, and going home.

On TV Lands The Jim Gaffigan Show,

Michael Ian Black plays the snide
ex-boyfriend-turned-gay BFF of Jims wife
(Ashley Williams). And while its impossible
to imagine anyone doing the character
more justice, Black can easily recall a time
when he struggled to find the right roles.
Here, he discusses the shows second season,
how he found his place in the industry
by creating his own work, and more.

How did you get your SAG-AFTRA

card? I think it was the episode of
NYPD Blue I did in its first season.
I played a gay street hustler with David
Caruso. It was just one scene, but it
was, like, my first real TV job, and it
was incredible. It was incredible to feel
like, Oh, Im acting with a person Ive
seen on the television. And theres a
whole crew here and theres cameras
here and Im not totally terrible.
Although I havent seen it. I might be
totally terrible.
On whom do you have an acting
crush? My current is probably Mark
Rylance. I was so happy when he
won the Oscar for Bridge of Spies
because I thought, This is such a quiet
and brilliant performance. Its not
flashy at all. And he probably wont
get recognized for it because its so
very quiet. So I was thrilled to see
that other people saw what I did in the
performance. I get very excited about
those kinds of performances where
its all about the inner lifeprobably

because Im so incapable of it myself.

I just feel like a clown most of the time,
honking my clown nose and wobbling
around in my clown shoes, so I really
admire that very centered, very
present performance.
In the alternate universe in which
you arent an actor, what would
you be doing? Collecting cans on the
street. I have no other skills [besides
acting]. What else am I going to do? I
have no idea. Maybe Id be an Iago-type
character whispering dark thoughts into
the ears of politicians. I could do that.
What do you wish youd known
before you started acting? I wish
Id had the confidence to know that
it is possible to make a living in this
industry and the wherewithal to know
that to accomplish that, you need
to take as much of your career into
your own hands as possible. To me, it
meant learning how to write, working
with a close circle of friends, being
independent, and letting the work
emerge from there, as opposed to
doing the grind of constantly hustling,
auditioning, and all that stuff (that
you still have to do and that I would
encourage everyone to continue
doing). But to know that at the end
of the day when I was giving one of
my mediocre auditions, I still had
the ability to come back and work
with people who I respected and who
respected me It gave me the tools to
survive in an industry that I didnt know
if I had a place in.

ACTOR NEEDS TO STUDY. THE LESSONS OF BEING ON A SET ARE NOT TAUGHT IN
ACTING PROGRAMS AND THEY REALLY SHOULD BE.

ts good to be Netflix these daysand that extends
to actors and casting directors alike.
On June 13 at the Paramount Theatre in
Hollywood, buzzy, critically acclaimed Netflix
series Master of None, Orange Is the New Black,
Narcos, Love, and House of Cards were represented
in a panel of casting directors and actors discussing how
the Netflix environment has helped them all succeed.
For Neve Campbell, working on a Netflix series like
House of Cards is different for a multitude of reasons. I
think the expectation is different, the way people bingewatch is very different, she said. They just have so
much freedom with their writing. Its more risky, which
is great, so the great writers are there.
With creative freedom also comes exploring sensitive
subject matter and, yes, nudity for actors. Casting director
Jennifer Euston said shes upfront about everything when

seeking actors for the roles on the envelope-pushing

OITNB. We dont want anybody to be uncomfortable
and we want everybody to have fun and enjoy it, she told
us. Some people are really cool about it, some people
dont feel like doing it, and thats their prerogative and we
understand that and respect it.
Netflix also got
high marks from its

faces. Carla Hool, who
CASTING DIRECTOR
ALLISON JONES
casts Narcos, used
Colombian actor Juan
Pablo Raba as an example. Ive tried to cast him many,
many times but nobody has ever been open to casting
him because he was not known. Netflix was totally open
and now hes working like crazy, she said. In the past
year, Raba has juggled jobs on Narcos, ABCs Marvels
Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., and Historys upcoming Six.
But actors also need to stand out when they get that
audition, and Master of None casting director Allison
Jones advised not shaking off that which sets you apart
no matter what the breakdown might say. A different
look is important. A real look is important. What you
really bring to the part is important, she said during the
panel. Bring something of yourself to the part because
were looking for that.
With a big hit like House of Cards comes high-class
problems like big names eager to be on your shownot that
casting directors Laray Mayfield and Julie Schubert are
complaining. Weve run a list for five years of people saying, If theres ever anything, my client loves the show,
Schubert said. We love to find great places for them!
The actors definitely benefit from a big hit, too,
said Natasha Lyonne, who cited fellow OITNB cast
members like Tony nominee Danielle Brooks, currently
on Broadway in The Color Purple. Its a huge game
changer to be a part of something that feels culturally
relevant and also critically relevant, Lyonne said. I feel
like its very rare when that happens.
Landing a Netflix job is one thing, but the creatively
supportive environment has given something to Master
of None cast member Nol Wells that shell take to
future auditions and jobs. I am definitely more confident and I trust myself a lot more, she said. I guess
people do give you the benefit of the doubt and I got
some higher-profile auditions, but if I didnt have any
confidence, it wouldnt matter.

ACTOR 101

[Meet the Maker]

Kate Hamill,
Sense and Sensibility
BY JACK SMART

KATE HAMILL, LIKE MANY

actors who happen to be women,
was fed up with the lack of female
roles onstage.
I had been an actor for many
years, she remembers, and was
frustrated because oftentimes
when youre a woman, youre competing with 400 other actresses to
play someones wife... girlfriend...
prostitute.
Her decision to do something
about it led to a Lucille Lortel and
Drama League Awardnominated
adaptation of Jane Austens Sense
and Sensibility. The production
(which premiered in 2014, was
remounted this spring at the Gym at
Judson, and returned to the venue
for an extended run June 17Oct. 2)
exemplifies the qualities that put
Off-Broadway theater company
Bedlam on the map: imaginative

12 backstage 06.23.16

staging, a spare but resourceful

approach to design, and wholehearted theatricality.
Plenty of classic works receive
adaptations for the stage, but too
few feature the kind of strong,
complicated heroines that populate
Austens novels. Most adapters,
Hamill explains, are not young
women. Thanks in part to a $100
bet from Andrus Nichols, cofounder and producing director of
Bedlam, Hamill began writing an
adaptation that would fit the companys aesthetic. I didnt want to
lose that hundred bucks, she says
with a laugh.
Now Nichols and Hamill play
Elinor and Marianne Dashwood,
respectively, bringing two of literatures most fascinating and
flawed women to life onstage.
With direction from Eric Tucker

and choreography from Alexandra

Beller, Bedlams Sense and Sensibility gives Austen the spirit of a
modern rom-com while maintaining a gutsy commitment to posh
accents and period costumes. A
joyous opening dance number, for
example, transitions seamlessly
from a Pharrell Williams jam to a
19th-century jig.

Actors generally
tend to make great
playwrights because if
youre interested enough
in acting, you have an
ear for dialogue.
I really love theater that embraces
theater, says Hamill. I feel very
strongly that when youre doing an
adaptation you should have a point
of viewbecause otherwise, why

Jason OConnell, Kate Hamill, and John Russell in Sense and Sensibility

do it? Jane Austen wrote a brilliant,

brilliant novel; what do I have to say
thats new? Or what does the novel
mean to me? Adapting anything, she
says, is about answering those questions entirely within a new medium.
If someones coming to the theater,
you should have a reason why this
should be a play. Not, I love that
novel, lets have actors speak it.
Her experience as a performer,
she says, helped fuel this venture
into playwriting. Actors generally
tend to make great playwrights
because if youre interested enough
in acting, you have an ear for dialogue. You have a brain for how
different characters react to different situations. More performers
should write for the stage, Hamill
adds, as it teaches them about
every aspect of the theater-making
process and engenders empathy
for other playwrights. You can look
at stories from all sides. I definitely
think its made me a better actor to
be a writer.
Plus, its simply empowering.
Having a project of her own, Hamill
says, provided a sense of autonomy.
Even if I was just auditioning and
looking for my next gig, I had something of my own. Particularly for
actors, its important to have something of your own. So much is based
on chance as an actor, and having
your own project can be really helpful to feeling centered.
The most crucial thing for actorwriters to remember, however, is
to create the piece you want to see
at the theater. Dont worry about
conventional wisdom, says Hamill.
Dont try to write Annie Baker or
David Mamet. Try to write what you
would like to see onstage.
That goes for inventing the roles
youd like to play as well, she adds,
the kind of roles you would like to
give people and yourselfnot what
you think is popular or even what
you think is produceable. Write the
play where, if you were to see it, you
would go, Oh my God! I want to be
in that play.

BY MARCI LIROFF

A COUPLE OF WEEKS AGO I HAD

the pleasure of speaking at the first
of a series of free classes given by
the Casting Society of America to
diverse communities of actors and
filmmakers within Los Angeles. The
plan is to continue this series every
other month.
Organized by the newly formed
CSA Committee on Diversity (which
is led by CSA Vice President Russell Boast, Leah Daniels Butler, and
Michael Sanford) and sponsored in
part by SAG-AFTRA and facilitated by
Ann Thomas of Transgender Talent,
LLC, the two-day seminar and interactive work session was attended
by over 70 transgender performers
and filmmakers and included casting directors Geralyn Flood, Jeremy
Gordon, Jami Rudofsky, and Amanda
Lenker Doyle.
Casting directors have been on
the forefront of casting diverse
actors for decades. Traditionally,
BACKSTAGE.COM

we think outside the box. We are

the first to suggest casting diverse
actors to show our creative team
how to flesh out the project with
real people who reflect our society.
I gave a lecture that covered the
skills it takes to be a casting director, how to get into the business,
and what were looking for when
were casting, along with tools that
help actors navigate the business.
As usual, I talked a lot about the one
thing you can control in this crazy
business: your perspective. Getting
rid of the negativity and helplessness
one may feel and replacing it with
confidence and determination will
get you through most any situation.
One woman who was a filmmaker and just starting out as an
actor bemoaned the fact that there
were so few opportunities for older
Latinas. Our group of casting director teachers responded, Youre a
director. Do you have a camera? You

can write? Create your own project

and feature yourself. You have all
the tools. Dont wait for someone to
ask you to the party.
I interviewed Candis Cayne, the
first transgender actor to be cast
on a prime-time television series.
Youve done an interview for the
It Gets Better campaign. Can
you advise our readers how it gets
better when theyre in the middle
of difficult times? Her response
inspired the audience. What you
have to realize is that no matter
how tough things are now, it will get
better. It might take one month, five
months, or more. But no matter
how dark youre feeling, you will find
a place where you are accepted and
will be able to shine and stay strong.
It is so important to find a tribe.
Surround yourself with people who
understand and love you. With that
kind of support, you really can get
through anything.

We are the first to

suggest casting
diverse actors to
flesh out the project
with real people.
I asked her, What do you do
when youre offered a role and you
dont feel that it accurately depicts
a trans person? Cayne responded,
I do one of two things. I discuss it
with the writer or director and see
if they will change it so it properly
depicts the trans experience, or I
walk away. I really feel like I can be
true to the trans experience as an
actor by only doing parts that are
truthful on my end. But I also dont
want to change how characters
react toward trans people. Thats
not my job. My job as an actor is to
create a meaningful character that
is honest and true.

Congratulations! Thats

discuss what you can expect and
whats expected of you.
When actors start working with
their first agent, they expect a
flurry of activity from Day 1, and
thats rarely the case. It takes time
to get a new client out there. We
have to figure out the right fit from
a casting perspective. That means
finding the correct type of part
for you in terms of age and type.
Speaking realistically, I wouldnt
expect a whole lot of auditions
during those first few weeks.
So what can you expect? Well,
you should start seeing activity after the first month. If you
dont, there could be a problem.
A friendly check-in might be in
order. Just keep it pleasant and

bloodsucking freak! is never the
right way to go.
When you finally start receiving
auditions, they should feel like
theyre right for you. If youre sent
out three consecutive times to play
a character 10 years older than
your true age, there could be a disconnect between reality and the
way your agent sees you. This isnt
a big problem; it happens all the
time. Like I said before, we have
to figure out the right fit for each
of our clients. So the key here is to
communicate your concerns.
On that same note, if you made
it clear during your first meeting that youre not interested in
doing nudity and those first few
auditions involve you dancing
on a stripper pole, this could be a
warning sign that your agent isnt

Other agents prefer to just

email out the details without calling the client first. I guess thats
fine. Just make sure you read the
email and attachments carefully.
And please dont forget to reply
with a confirmation. Thats really,
really important.
Now this brings up the F-word
no, not fennel. Im talking about
feedback. Actors often want some
after every audition. This is a major
pet peeve for guys like me. There
just arent enough hours in the
day for every agent in town to call
every single casting director for
feedback on every single audition.
So please trust that your reps know
when its appropriate to check in
with casting and when its not.
That takes us to your first
booking. When the offer comes
in, I will call with all of the deal
points. Make sure you write
them down. And please ask your
questions before giving me the
go-ahead to close. Once that deal
is closed, its almost impossible to
go back and change it.
Now lets go make some magic!

Why is a space like this important

for actors? Its not just for actors.
Were all wearing multiple hats.
I did a survey at the very beginning of this endeavor, where I
went to a small business center
and met with an advisor, and we
researched coworking spaces and
rehearsal spaces. It helped me
gauge what the potential numbers
would look like, but I started it
based it off of what I would want.

[Inside Job]

Rachel Berger

RACHEL BERGER WANTS ARTISTS TO THINK MORE LIKE STARTUPS.
Thats why shes creating the Artist Co-op, a collaborative workspace
where actors, writers, and directors can share resources in a costeffective space. Its first pop-up was held June 710 at the Centre for Social
Innovation in New York City. The next steps for the Artist Co-op are to
look to find a more permanent space in Manhattan. By bringing the
performing arts community together at the pop-up, we hope this will
raise awareness in the NYC real estate community of the big need for
artists space, Berger says.

THE ARTIST CO-OP FOUNDER

What is the Artist Co-op? Its a

shared workspace for performing artists. Were taking the
WeWork model and applying it to
the performing arts community.
Its a space for shared resources.
What I want the Artist Co-op to
do is not just be office space but
performance space, including a
convertible lounge, rehearsal space,

and kitchen. Its very necessary

for it to be in midtown Manhattan,
because it needs to be convenient
to all the boroughs. I imagine that
the Artist Co-op will have business
amenities, like a copy machine, or
just act as a place to plan out your
scripts and highlight your lines
before going to an audition. This is
the dream scenario.

Why coworking? The arts are such

a collaborative form, especially
in performance. Youre working together to create. Theres
something about the organic
connection that gives you credibilityIm more likely to recommend
you because Ive seen you. Were
just trying to tell our stories; we
dont want to build competition
but have a conversation about our
work, and theres not a place right
now to do that.
Is affordability important? I think
of this as a tripod: Community on
one leg, real estate on the other
leg, and budget on the other. A lot
of artists cant pay for a rehearsal
space. I imagine the space would
be a subsidized model that would
help the artists budget.
What else could actors learn from
the startup community? In the
business community, theyre willing to give advice. I get free advice
all the time. The artist community
could be a little bit more giving. We
could also go into our toolboxes
and create our own work instead
of asking for a part. To think of
ourselves as a working actor or a
working artist, we can emulate
that startup. Think of yourself as
an entrepreneur. Instead of waiting
for someone to give me a title, I can
create my own.

By providing access to the resources,

people can become resources for one another.

MARIS CURRAN, FILMMAKER,
FIVE NIGHTS IN MAINE

First-time feature writer Maris Curran benefitted from TAA in 2015 for her film Five Nights
in Maine, starring Emmy and Golden Globe
nominee David Oyelowo (who also jumped on
as a producer after reading the script), two-time
Oscar winner Dianne Wiest, and Oscar nominee
Rosie Perez. The intimate Five Nights deals
with grief and coping with it, and centers on a
man (Oyelowo) who must deal with his prickly
mother-in-law (Wiest) in the aftermath of his
wifes death.
Curran teamed up with TAA late in the postproduction process in hopes of gaining insight
and contacts to secure distribution. She participated in the TFI speed dating Networking
Night at the Tribeca Film Festival, where she

and her producer were able to meet new industry people as well as strengthen relationships
with already established contacts.
To get the most out of any meeting with a
potential collaborator, Curran advises filmmakers to know their goals going in. What tangibly
would you like to achieve here? she asks. Do
you want a follow-up meeting? Do you want
grants or investors? Tailor your pitch to that
and be realistic about who youre talking to.
Preparing a visual aid, such as a lookbook
on an iPad, to make the vision more tangible
was also useful for Curran, whose film will be
distributed in theaters in August of this year.
You want to be engaging as many senses as
you can, she says.
And the support doesnt cease after TAAs
one-year program has wrapped; alumni are eligible to apply for alumni grants, too, which can
total up to $10,000.
This years program selections include First
Match, a film about a young girl who sees
wrestling boys as the way to get back to her
estranged father; Love Comes Later, about a
South Asian immigrant woman and the shady
characters she meets while working at a motel;
and a slew of documentaries covering topics from gang violence in New Jersey to four
women on an intercontinental sailing trip.
While submissions for the 2016 program have
closed, keep your finger on the pulse for the
next round of opportunities coming out of this
valuable institute!

THE FIRST ORDER OF BUSINESS FOR ALL

first-time filmmakers is finding a team to support them. Whether its the friends they call
for favors, the investors they convince to back
their films, or the distributors who pick up their
projects, building a support system is essential
to success. Since 2004, Tribeca All Access has
been helping storytellers do just that in the
form of grants, a well-developed contact list,
spaces for screenings, and other offerings.
As part of the Tribeca Film Institute, TAA
walks its mentees through the art of filmmaking; depending on where they are in their
process, guidance can focus on pitch delivery
coaching, helping to hire an editor for postproduction, or setting up meetings with industry
professionalsfrom distributors and producers
to international broadcasters and studios.
For access to these resources, perfecting the

TAA application requires both a project synopsis and an artistic statement, which should be

What we really focus on is a special ask for

The fact that the program retains participants until age 30 is the key to its success, says

that means to a writer in his or her early, mid-,

critical period of development. Theyre often
trying to find their voice and decide, Is this
really what I want to do with my life, a life in

Youngbloods success is reflected in the

Part of what happened with Rob [with]

How does an aspiring playwright get into

constant demand for interesting characters
to populate sets. Shows are not [shot on a]
backlot, and since New York is a character, you
have to fill it with the characters who live here:
New Yorkers!
A new crop of opportunities has given the
managers all the more reason to make the noise
needed to equalize dismal diversity figures by
championing the networks and CDs who compile diverse lineups and denouncing the ones
who dont.
As actors and those in the business, we
need to know about our business if we want
to change it from within, Alvarez wrote on

the MET Groups Facebook page. Twenty

years later it pains me that I have to submit
Asian actors when they are looking for a
hostess at a sushi restaurant. Or that the
maid has to be Latina and the street taco guy
Mexican. Trust me, it is getting harder and
harder for me to click on those submissions,
because I know that once that diverse role
is filled with someone from Mexico, it will
be harder to get another actor from Mexico
on the same show. Or even just another
diverse actor. Period.
If Aziz Ansaris Master of None taught us
anything, its that two Indian guys on a TV
show still doesnt make it an Indian show.

STUDIES ARE SHINING A LIGHT ON WHAT

much of Hollywood already knows: Of all the
speaking and named roles in 2014s films and
the television shows in the 201415 season, 71.7
percent went to white actors. And according to
a report from UCLAs Bunche Center, in 201213,
Caucasian performers outnumbered minority
actors 6-to-1 on broadcast TV, and almost 2-to-1
on cable and digital. Annette E. Alvarez and
Joan C. Silverman of Multi-Ethnic Talent are
looking to change these numbers.
The managers, who began working in
the 1990s after an Indian actor who lived in
Silvermans building was seeking a team, have
connected with many actors of color since
the days when Dick Wolfe and Law & Order:
Special Victims Unit were the most frequent
employers of their diverse roster. Nearly two
decades later, the two friends have continued
to mold MET into a competitive company that
can contend with the era of Orange Is the New
Black, Fresh Off the Boat, and Black-ish.
Backstage spoke to the two just after NBCs
Diversity Initiative wrapped in June; theyd
reviewed about 80 of their clients who put
themselves on tape to submit.
I was getting up at 4 a.m. every day to look
at the tapes and I would send them back if they
sucked, Alvarez says bluntly. I ended up taping three people. They did it with me in my
house, being directed, and theyre hysterical!
While theyre hands-on with their approach
to an actors careerregarding headshots,
Alvarez says, Its the calling card of an actor! If
I find [talented] people arent getting auditions,
its usually [because of] the picturesthey
make very clear they are not agents. METs job
isnt solely to book an audition with a big-time
casting director, they say, but to provide the
professional materials and guidance that make
for a more attractive candidate.
Their roster boasts Persian, African, Latino,
South-Asian, Brazilian, and triracial actors, and
more. Their client list does include Caucasians,
but theyre often native Europeans.

Keeping Disney Weird

EMBRACE YOUR WEIRDNESS MAY NOT BE

the first thing you think of when you think of
a childrens show lesson, but thats somewhat
the point for the creators of Bizaardvark,
premiering June 24 on the Disney Channel.
What Kyle and I love about the show is
that the two lead girls feel very different for
the Disney Channel, says co-creator Josh
Lehrman. The emphasis is on embracing
your weirdness, and thats what Im most
excited about.
We passed the Bechdel Test! Lehrmans
co-creator, Kyle Stegina, chimes in, his
timing impeccable.
The two met while interning at Gersh Talent
AgencyLehrman in the literary department
and Stegina in the comedy departmentand
worked side by side but never together as
members of writing groups over the years.
Eventually, they teamed up on a pilot that went
nowhere, but did result in the beginning of a
beautiful writing relationship. As Stegina puts
it, You need an emotional support partner.
That alone is worth half your paycheck.

Its very important to trade off in a writing

team which one is going to be the calm one that
day and which one is going to react, Lehrman
adds. Some days we come in after some rough
notes and have to check the ledger: Whose day
is it? Ugh, OK, Ill be calm today.
That emotional tradeoff worked its way into
the duos characters, as well. Bizaardvark
is the story of best friends Paige and Frankie,
whose viral music videos land them studio
space in a YouTube-like environment filled
with like-minded creatives. And though both
Lehrman and Stegina cheerfully admit that
they dont know how 13-year-old girls think,
they do understand the intricacies of a creative
partnership, and approached Paige and
Frankies story from that perspective.
They were also blessed with what they call
the best cast on televisionanother process in
which they were deeply involved.
This was a really great opportunity, because
we were allowed to be in every meeting.
We had a lot of say and they respected our
thoughts, Stegina says. Disney, from what I

understand, is one of the big players as far as

giving younger writers a shot and following
their vision. We went from 0 to 60 on this.
Both praise series casting director Sheryl
Levine, who, very early on, brought in eventual
lead Olivia Rodrigo. The cool thing was Olivia
was great and Madison Hu was great, but the
first time they read together it was a whole
different level, Lehrman recalls. That first
read together also happened to be during the
studio executives session, when Lehrman
says the general reaction to their immediate
chemistry was, Oh! We have a show!
And all because the teams manager
submitted a script not in any way applicable
to the Disney tone, as Stegina jokes, one that
landed the two writers in the inaugural Disney
Channel Storytellers program. We were the
wild card in the Disney program, Stegina says.
Adds Lehrman, The VP of Disney looked at
Kyle and I and said, Im afraid of you guys.
But with Bizaardvark the result of that
program, there was obviously nothing to fear
from these two.

Its very important to trade off in a writing team which one is going to be the
calm one that day and which one is going to react. JOSH LEHRMAN

Sir Peter Shaffer

On behalf of the entire company
at Fundamental Theater Project,
we are deeply saddened by
the passing of our friend and
honorary patron, Sir Peter
Shaffer.
Sir Peter's contribution to the
arts over the course of his long
life made such an impact on
artists all across the world,
and we were privileged to have
his guidance, support and the
opportunities to honor him.
Many other respected artists

that have collaborated with FTP

- Ian McKellen, Simon Callow,
Alec Baldwin, Aidan Quinn,
Derek Jacobi, John Guare - have
done so, purely out of love
and respect for Sir Peter. This
past March, we presented the
first Peter Shaffer Award to
playwright Ben Holbrook, as a
promise to nurture the future
leading voices of the theatre.
We shall continue to honor Sir
Peter with this award over the
coming years, and keep his
legacy alive through our work.
Thank you, Peter.

Actors Workshop. Facilitator states:
The Integral Actors Workshop is a
multi-functional class and artistic
home for actors looking to deepen their
craft and themselves in a safe,
supportive environment. Our
innovative approach utilizes: the
instrumental and approach work of Eric
Morris and Lee Strasberg; the momentto-moment and crafting principles of
Sanford Meisner; the character and
physicalization stylings of Stella Adler
and Larry Moss; the vocal and presence
work of Patsy Rodenburg; Harold
Guskins approach to taking it off the
page; and our own unique innovations
with the text, including Script Inquiry,
The Given Circumstances Inventory
and the Inner Imagery Workout, all
designed to bring you into immediate,
free, and intimate contact with the

processes are fast, impulsive, and go
very deep, bypassing the excessive
time and over-intellectualization of
traditional script analysis. Each

Ray Donovan

Showtimes hit drama Ray Donovan returns in all its bruised-knuckle, family drama
glory June 26, and we couldnt be more excited to have Liev Schreiber and Jon Voight
back on our screens on a weekly basis. To get everyone pumped for the fourth season,
we asked Dash Mihokthe troubled Bunchy Donovan himselffor a no-holds-barred
peek at what happens off camera.
(1) Exteriors of the Fite Club are on location and require us all to use the incredibly
inviting, super cool, and refreshingly sanitary Porta-Potties. I dont always take my
bling off, but this just felt right. (2) Papa Jon and I had to light up at least 10 of these in
a scene that was first on the call sheet. Needless to say, that breakfast burrito did not
go down so well that morn. (3) Just two character actorswho can look remarkably
like brothers when their noses are close together. (4) No shortage of pimpin ones
ride, especially when it comes to Mickeys storyline. (5) I love it behind the camera as
much as I do in front. Looking very much forward to directing an episode next year!
