Captain America : Civil War is the sequel to Captain America : The Winter Soldier and the thirteenth movie from the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It is directed by the Russo Brothers and stars Chris Evans, Robert Downey Jr., Elizabeth Olsen, Scarlett Johannson, Paul Rudd, Chadwick Boseman, Tom Holland and many more. The story takes place after the battle of Sokovia which led to a number of deaths. Due to the events of New York, Washington and now Sokovia, the UN has decided to mandate all of the avengers and other superheroes to be under watch by the board members. Due to this accord, Captain America and Iron Man have very different views on it. This ensues to a battle that teams up with other members that they could recruit.

In Captain America : Civil War, new characters emerged such as Black Panther and Spider-Man and as the Marvel franchise continues to grow, these characters have abilities. In order to bring it to life, sound effects becomes a very important part in the movie. As new members join the MCU, sound designers and editors thought of a way to differentiate between the characters. It is important that each of them have their own distinct sound.

Due to the format of solo movie before a team-up movie, the sound designers needs to make sure if some of these characters team-up with other members, their sound would need to stand on its own. Sometimes, you could hear the sound of the super power abilities without even them appearing on screen. This is called diegetic sound of which the subject of the story makes the sound. Their source of the sound can either be on-screen or off-screen. It becomes a trademark for the characters and helps them shape them as an iconic figure.

The movie is an action movie but these characters are superheroes with abilities. Therefore, the sound made through punches is unusually stronger than the norm. But at the same time, you have to take into account that it cannot be too strong as it could be depicted as a kill.

In the movie, we are introduced to the new Spider-Man. Spider-Man has already been depicted several times in the cinema so the designers had to find a way to create a new and different sound for the character but also keep the essence of the true characteristics. The sound designers used foley recordings to test out the spider web

sounds like compressed foam, fishing line recordings, or tapes. Using foley recordings, the sound designers are able to play around to create new unexpected sound for the character. It could also even enhance the visual experience as it helps the actions look more realistic.

Dubbing is also used especially for the characters with mask on them. Spiderman, Black Panther, and Ant-Man went through dialogue dubbing as the production dialogue had a lot of problems especially during the airport battle scene. But with dubbing, the actors and writers are able to write additional dialogues which even helps the movie even greater as they come up with unexpected results. Black Panther voice had to be pitched-in and made it lower and a bit more in command. With editing its pitch, the Black Panther voice is able to resemble its physique and appearance.

The music usually appears during the action sequences. This is to heighten the tension and drama of the scene. The gravitas of the action from the airport battle scene is accompanied with the music score that makes the scene much enjoyable to watch. Music score is usually called non-diegetic sound, as it does not have an actual source coming from the story. It only accompanies the story to enhance dramatic effect.

It is not to be disregarded that the movie also uses silence. Usually during emotional scenes, the sound designers and editors decide to not place anything in the background. One reason it could be because the audience need to focus on the dialogue that is taking place but using this technique it also gives a mood of the tension between the characters. For example, the scene in which Tony Stark meets one of the victims mother, the tension is very high between them but the silence helps the scene in a way it makes it uncomfortable and awkward.

As filmmakers, attention to detail is always appreciated and Captain America: Civil War is one of those movies where little details shape the larger picture. Although it is a blockbuster movies, but do not disregard the small, intimate and intricate works of the designers and editors as they are the true heroes of the movie.
