Bay, our outdoor exercise equipment and bark parks. We were smitten
over catching our French bulldog cover model, in his full glory, enjoying
bark beach.
I want to thank all of the residents who provided public input to the
U.S. Coast Guard regarding modifying the operating schedule for
the 63 Street Bridge. This bridge will no longer open for commercial
or recreational vessels during morning and afternoon rush hour.
We continue aggressively looking at all measures to alleviate traffic
congestion, and this is certainly a small victory. The city has also
agreed to a new water taxi stop in the Sunset Harbour neighborhood
and hope it provides an alternative transit mode to reaching Downtown
Miami while taking in the spectacular bay views.
As we relish these longer days and warmer months, let us not lose
sight that we are in the midst of hurricane season. I encourage each of
you to be prepared and have a plan. Please visit miamibeachfl.gov to

PLANNED PROGRESS
his summer, Miami Beach soccer enthusiasts are now able to play on the citys first
organic infill synthetic turf field. The Office of Capital Improvement Projects completed
much needed renovations to the soccer field located in Flamingo Park. Other upgrades
included landscaping, sod restoration around the playing field, installation of new sports
lighting and a drainage system underneath the soccer field.
Our office conducted extensive research to identify the most appropriate infill after
concerns arose with the rubber crumb infill originally proposed, explained Director
David Martinez, Office of Capital Improvement Projects. It was determined that the best
product for Miami Beach would be an infill composed of cork, which is 100 percent
environmentally-friendly and non-toxic.
The infill is an organic, recyclable and sustainable product that is harvested from the cork
oak tree every nine years, without being harmful to the trees. The rationale behind utilizing
cork is for its lasting durability, reducing the surface temperature of the field, its strong
hygienic value and it being a completely recyclable material.
The newly renovated soccer field is now available for practice time and regular play. At
240 by 160 feet (80 by 53 yards), the Miami Beach community now has a slightly larger
soccer field that can be used to accommodate the United States Youth Soccer League
standards for ages 12 and under, and the many recreational soccer clubs in the area.
These renovations are a welcome addition to our community and provide a safe playing
experience for the children that come to play soccer, said Miami Beach resident Michael
Fonseca who is excited to watch his four-year-old son play on the new field.

LEASH Investing in a long leash is key to giving your pup room to roam on his park adventure. If
youre hitting South Pointe Park, always make sure your dog is wearing a collar with an ID.
WASTE BAGS Nobody wants to dig up beach poop while building a castle. Come prepared with
several bags for your time by the water. Our #MBClean campaign thanks you in advance.
TREATS AND TOYS Frisbees and toys that float are essential for a weekend beach date. Steer
clear of wet tennis balls that stick to the sand. Your dog might not like that kind of treat in their mouth.
WATER, FOOD & APPROPRIATE BOWLS Hot summer sun and afternoon play time could
dehydrate your pup quickly. Make sure to pack a water bottle and lightweight bowl on your trip to
keep your furry friend energized.
BARK BEACH PASS A daily pass can be purchased at the Bark Beach for $5. Annual passes are
offered to residents for a special price of $50 and can be purchased at either the Flamingo Park Pool
or Normandy Isle Park Pool during regular business hours.
RABIES SHOT COMPLETED You dont want your pup to be the one spreading disease in the
schoolyard. Have courtesy for other dogs and keep your own healthy by getting their rabies
shotscompleted.
SUNSCREEN You might not associate sunburn with dogs, but if your pup stays out long enough
sunburns can happen. Sunscreen for babies and sensitive skin are ideal for your dog to use, as long
as they dont contain zinc oxide. Apply it to your dogs nose, ears, belly and groin areas if they like
to catch some rays while laying on their back. Remember hot sand makes for uncomfortable paws.

RECIPE
Classic Flan
Flan clsico
Sirve 6 flanes individuales
Ingredients:
Ingredientes:
1 cup sugar
1 taza de azcar
cup water
taza de agua
4 eggs, beaten
4 huevos batidos
teaspoon vanilla
cup sugar
Preheat oven to 350F. Place the 1 cup sugar and water in a
heavy-bottomed saucepan and stir to dissolve the sugar. Place
over medium heat and boil the sugar, without stirring, until it
just starts to turn a honey brown, around 10-15 minutes.
Remove the caramelized sugar from heat and pour into a
9-inch cake pan or in equal amounts into each of 6 individual
ramekins, swirling to coat the bottom. You may not need all the
sugar. Place the cake pan or ramekins in a baking pan large
enough to hold them without touching.
In a large bowl, beat together the eggs, condensed milk,
whole milk or water, vanilla and 1/2 cup sugar until smooth.
Pour into the cake pan or into each of the ramekins.
Fill the baking pan with enough warm water to come about
2/3 of the way up sides of the containers. Place in the oven
and cook until a knife inserted into the center of the custard
comes out clean, anywhere from 45 minutes to over an hour.
Do not overcook your flan or it may curdle.
Remove the custard(s) from the water bath and chill well. Run
a knife around the edges of the custard, invert over a serving
dish and serve.

What is Stormwater?
Stormwater is the water that flows over the land during a storm event. As clean rain hits land, it picks up and washes
away the pollutants that have accumulated around our city and discharges them into Biscayne Bay. Studies in Florida
have determined that the first one-inch of runoff generally carries 90% of the pollution from a storm, and is therefore
usually the dirtiest.
The city does a great deal to prevent pollutants entering our waterways, including:
Increasing pervious surfaces that retain water and filter out pollutants.
Regular street cleaning to remove debris that could be picked up during the next storm.
Upgrading the drainage system with structures that captures oil, trash and sediment.
Frequent cleaning and maintenance of the stormwater system to remove trapped pollutants.
Waterway cleaning three times a week to remove floating and submerged trash.

BEACH IN BLOOM
FEEDING
OUR SOIL
By Sanna OSullivan
48
Compost is the ultimate food for our soil, explained Dr. Melissa
Selem, executive director, Fertile Earth Foundation whose
organization focuses on catalyzing the composting community in
South Florida. Healthy and fertile soils are our lifeline, growing the
food that nourishes us, and a wide variety of plants that inspire and
protect us daily.
Food scraps and yard waste currently make up 20 to 30 percent
of what gets tossed into landfills. Once in the landfill, the nutrients
in the food scraps are lost, taking up space and contributing to
greenhouse gas emissions in the form of methane. Diverting this
type of waste into a regenerative system to improve the health of the
soil benefits every living thing.
Composting is based on taking organic materials such as leaves,
vegetable and food scraps and turning them into a rich soil
amendment using four basic ingredients: nitrogen, carbon, water
and air.
To start the process, you need carbon in the form of dead leaves
and other yard clippings (browns), nitrogen in the form of
vegetable and fruit scraps, coffee grounds or egg shells (greens)
and water, which helps break down the organic matter. The browns
and greens are layered together. By keeping the materials moist
and turning occasionally they will break down.
Worms can also be added to a composting program as these
creatures wonderfully process food scraps into nutrient rich humus
by eating and digesting.
There is a composting method to fit a variety of lifestyles and
spaces, added Selem. The Botanical Garden has an excellent free
workshop on Saturday mornings for condo-dwellers and singlefamily home residents to learn how to compost.
The Miami Beach Botanical Garden and Fertile Earth Foundation
are working together to educate and inspire the community to
embrace composting. Their compost system, located behind the
Native Garden, is open to food scrap donations from residents who
want to compost, but do not have the time or will for a system of
their own.
The finished product is proudly used to organically feed the
Botanical Gardens plants.
