Materials

Blending Sounds:
This activity is working on
blending sounds. It is best done
once they have completed jolly
phonics.
Have 3 students come up and
give them each a letter to a CVC
word.
One at a time have the students
say the sound their letter makes.
When all 3 have went, have the
class put the sounds together to
figure out the word.
Do this a couple times.
If time allows have them pick fun
words that they like to stretch
and sound out. Have them write
them on a blank piece of paper.

Write a story as a group:


Start a story starter on the
board. You begin the story with
an engaging sentence. Once
upon a time when I was playing
in the woods
Have the children work together
to create a story. Sit in a circle
and each student says the next
line.

Variations:
Have the students work in
pairs/tables to create sentences
to continue the story.
If time allows, the supply teach
can make errors in the story and
then have the class correct them
together.

Describing the Picture


Have one student be the
describer while the rest of the
children are drawing. The
describer then has a picture and
describes it to the class while
they try and represent the
picture following the directions.
The person who then has the
drawing that is best represented
then gets to be the describer.
Variations
This game can be used across
the K-2 curriculum and making
the pictures slightly more
difficult for each grade.

Pictures that have a


variety of different
colors, shapes, letters
and lines. The pictures
should have lots of
funny detail so it makes
it a bit more
challenging

Sound Tennis
None needed.
Sound Tennis is a game that can
be played in a circle. The teacher
will pick an initial sound or letter
(Kindergarten) and then each
student has to say a word that
goes with the initial sounds or
letter.
If a student repeats a word or
cannot think of one they will do
5 jumping jacks.
The teacher will then choose a
new sound or letter.
Variations
Depending on the grade the
teacher can choose what theme
they will use for sound tennis.
For example, word families,
syllables, rhyming words, etc)

Various songs and poems that are


appropriate for children in
kindergarten. Do the various actions if
there are any.

Cross- Curricular: Music, have them


keep a steady beat to a song they
have learned.
You and Your World- many of the songs
are about topics in the curriculum.

The students will receive a smiley face


sticker. Then they will draw a body
around their sticker to create a
character. The students will then give
their character a setting. See below
variations for writing guide. After they
completed the writing task the
students can then color their
masterpiece.

Read My Mind (Word Wall Game)


The teacher picks a word on the
world wall to keep in mind. All
students have a scrap piece of
paper numbered 1 to 5.
The teacher gives out clues. For
example, how many letters,
vowels, constants, syllables, tall
letters, hanging letters, starts
with, ends with, etc.
After the first clue the students
write down what word they think
it is, while looking at the word

After the next clues are given
they may change their answer to
a word that matches or write the
same word again if it matches
each clue.
Response to Music: Choose a song
for the students to write a response to.
To get them thinking about the
response have a list of prompts on the
board. Please see sheet attached for
prompts. Have them write it on a piece
of loose leaf or in their writing journals.

Choose appropriate
songs for the grade
level. If you see CDs in
the classroom use
those or even use
YouTube if you have
access to a computer.
