REACTION PAPER: MEMOIRS of a GEISHA 1. What is the work of a Geisha? To move as a living work of art in order to entertain people, that is the work of a Geisha. Through dancing and musical skills, this entertainment is made possible, presumably to be highly paid. Their profession, for certain, rather than entertaining people requires much training and eager determination. Being a geisha then, is not in an instant. Being a meigo knocks first. This is when an apprentice is trained in service of simple circumstances of entertainment aside from performing arts. A little talk will do, pouring of wine and a round of conversations. Having a good impression is a must. Truly, a living work of art hidden in a blanket of mere expression. 2. What are Chiyo’s/Sayuri’s dilemmas? It is whether to pursue her goal to be a well-known geisha or to follow her heart and be with the chairman. Those are her dilemmas both alike to involve Pumpkin, Hatsumono, Mameha and the manly characters in the story. Yet these dilemmas then, had given birth to mere suffering, and more dilemmas than expected. Even how she would fit in the Nitta house is a problem. Other than finding her lost sister, her friendship to Pumpkin was put to test. But before this happened, Hatsumono displayed her disposition against Sayuri’s foreseen success. 3. What was the chairman’s role in her life? The chairman served as a window of inspiration and a stepping stone as well. With Sayuri, unfortunately unaware of all his deeds, still in the end Sayuri was able to know all of the sacrifices of the chairman. Moreover, being her inspiration, the chairman’s role was most probably meant to let Sayuri push through her a career and promised future. At the bottom line, the chairman’s role would be further described to be the love, joy, and true success than being a geisha. The true meaning and purpose of her life is revealed unto her through him. 4. What is the contradiction between being a geisha and Sayuri’s want in life? Her goal of being a well known geisha in their town even granted doesn’t offer happiness at all. Far from the very start, she has no better dream than to see the chairman again and lastly, to be with the chairman as his wife. Furthermore, the major problem was her will against what is planned for her. At certain circumstances, she was about to lose her beloved, but fortunately, the chairman had kept his love for the little girl he met near a bridge in their town, watched vigilant, and ended up to fight for his feeling to Sayuri.
