Understanding the Gender Spectrum
Leah Marie Tumlos-Castillo
Sexual Orientation: To Whom Am I Physically and Emotionally Attracted?
Sexual orientation is about who one is physically and emotionally attracted to. Physical
(or sexual) attraction can be thought of as the want, need or desire for physical contact
and relationships. Emotional (or romantic) attraction, on the other hand, is an affinity for
others and the desire for emotional relationships.
Understanding the Gender Spectrum
Cultivating a sense of awareness towards different gender identities is helpful in
understanding the gender spectrum. Through an increased awareness, individuals
develop gender sensitivity that aid in eliminating prejudices and discriminations against
those who choose to break through the binary. Each ones gender falls within the
gender spectrum being openminded and respectful helps one relate healthily to each
other, and thus contributes to a more peaceful and harmonious society.
