Sunday Sermon

a daily scripture guide

Week of July 11 July 16

O LORD, You are the portion of my inheritance and my cup;

You maintain my lot.
6 The lines have fallen to me in pleasant places;
Yes, I have a good inheritance.
7 I will bless the LORD who has given me counsel;
My heart also instructs me in the night seasons.
8 I have set the LORD always before me;
Because He is at my right hand I shall not be moved.
9 Therefore my heart is glad, and my glory rejoices;
My flesh also will rest in hope.
10 For You will not leave my soul in Sheol,
Nor will You allow Your Holy One to see corruption.
11 You will show me the path of life;
In Your presence is fullness of joy;
At Your right hand are pleasures forevermore.
This week I offer a paraphrase of Psalm 16:5-11. I invite you to rewrite the psalm in your own words as
well, that it may become your prayer.

MONDAY: Psalm 16:5-6 Sustenance

God, who is like food for my soul and drink for my thirsty spirit. You sustain me. What a privilege
to be part of your familyan heir to your glory and eternity.

Perhaps we may hear a word... - July 10

Scripture: 2 Samuel 16:5-12(NRSV)

When King David came to Bahurim, a man of the family of the house of Saul
came out whose name was Shimei son of Gera; he came out cursing. He threw
stones at David and at all the servants of King David; now all the people and
all the warriors were on his right and on his left. Shimei shouted while he
cursed, Out! Out! Murderer! Scoundrel! The Lord has avenged on all of you
the blood of the house of Saul, in whose place you have reigned; and the Lord
has given the kingdom into the hand of your son Absalom. See, disaster has
overtaken you; for you are a man of blood.
Then Abishai son of Zeruiah said to the king, Why should this dead dog curse
my lord the king? Let me go over and take off his head. But the king said,
What have I to do with you, you sons of Zeruiah? If he is cursing because the
Lord has said to him, Curse David, who then shall say, Why have you done
so? David said to Abishai and to all his servants, My own son seeks my life;
how much more now may this Benjaminite! Let him alone, and let him curse;
for the Lord has bidden him. It may be that the Lord will look on my distress,
and the Lord will repay me with good for this cursing of me today.
