The views and sections display:
division into compartments (tanks, engine room, holds)
location of bulkheads
location and arrangement of superstructure
parts of the equipment (winches, loading gear, bow thruster, life boats)

Docking Plan
a plan showing the form of the bottom and the location of appendages, sea chests,
overboard discharges, underwater valves, drain plugs, etc. so that keel blocks would
not be positioned directly under them.
The Docking Plan is the plan that is used to place the blocks and steadies for docking
the ship in a drydock.
They are useful for underwater profiles of the hull and many of them extend up as far
as the gunwhales.
The superstructure if shown is usually just a block diagram.
A ship will either have two docking plans or it will have the two plans incorporated into
the one drawing. The main idea of the plan is to ensure that the blocks are not
positioned in the same place for two consecutive dry docks thus ensuring that all
areas of the hull are painted at least every alternate docking. The plan not only shows
all the hull penetrations but also exactly where the blocks should be placed by the
dock prior to the ship entering it. The plan will be forwarded to the yard to enable
them to position the blocks prior to the ship entering and they will be told whether to
position the blocks on plan one or plan two.
The docking plan is used to obtain most of the information needed to plan the
drydocking of that vessel. Care should be taken to insure you are using the latest

revision of the plan.

Docking Plan Elevation View (Side Profile View)
The side view shows:
1 Location of Stern Reference Point (SRP) the point at which all longitudinal
dimensions are referenced from.
2 Location of Aft Perpendicular (AP)
3 Location of stern draft marks
4 Location of end of skeg
5 Frame spacing
6 Clearance required for shaft removal
7 Clearance required for rudder removal
8 Location of Forward Perpendicular (FP)
9 Location of forward draft marks
10 Location of last block
Plan View
The plan view shows:
1 Location of side blocks
2 Location of keel blocks
3 Location of hull openings
Hull Openings Below Waterline - Shows position of all hull protrusions and openings
that are below the waterline. Use to insure no interference with blocks.
Cross Section at Propellers - Use for docking clearance checks and removal
Keel Profile Variations in keel block height from a theoretical straight line are shown in
the detail Keel Profile. This accounts for a vessels sag or hog or other variations in the
keel line. The baseline keel block height is adjusted to account for these variations.
Blocking Position To facilitate the complete painting of the bottom, two or more
different positions for the vessel on the blocks may be indicated in the drawings and in
the Table of offsets. U.S. Navy vessels usually have 3 positions, Position 1, Position 2 and
Position 3. Be sure to obtain the correct docking position for this contract before
proceeding with planning of the docking.
Table of Offsets for Side Blocks Gives information needed for locating and
constructing side blocks. Also may give bilge keel dimensions for checking clearances.
Block Pressure - Table of Average Block Pressures Shows block areas and average
block pressures with fully loaded ship.
Trim Tables Trim tables are sometime provided to show the increase in draft at the
sonar dome or propellers caused when the vessel is floating at a trim. This data is helpful

when calculating clearances of these objects during docking, undocking and landing.
