ON THE VERGE OF TERROR: Increasing act of

terrorism
Everyday, we are confronted over and over with the same sad news about
violence, crime, wars and disasters either through morning newspapers, televisions
or radio. In fact, terrible things are happening around the world: Bomb attacks,
kidnappings and murders. These are the words that come to our mind when we hear the word
terrorism.
Terrorism was defined as: Criminal acts intended or calculated to provoke a state of
terror in the general public, a group of persons or particular persons for political purposes are in
any circumstance unjustifiable, whatever the considerations of a political, philosophical, racial,
religious or any other nature that may be invoked to justify them (United Nations General
Assembly).
Terrorism is an already known problem, for it brings everyday horror to the people, with
the rise of threats in terrorisms, how safe are we?
FACTIODS
Recent spates of attacks in Egypt, Lebanon, and France have focused the
worlds attention once again on terrorism particularly the Paris Attack where atleast
130 people were killed causing a global outpouring of outrage and sympathy.
Hijackings, bombings, and assassinations on different continents of the world
may seem like isolated attacks, but they reflect an easy reliance on violence as a
way to promote social, political, and religious change. Not only that, but terrorist
attacks are becoming more focused on civilians and less focused on military,
political, and religious targets. A study suggests that terrorism, far from being a
2015 phenomenon, there has been a sharp increase in the number of terrorist
attacks, with almost 10,000 occurring in 2013. Since 2000, the Taliban has been
responsible for the most deaths, 8763, from terror attacks, closely followed by AlQaeda with 8585. The Islamic State (IS, formerly known as ISIS/ISIL) and Boko
Haram both became more active in 2009, which was the first year that either group
killed over 300 people. Based on data up to the end of 2013, these two groups have
killed in excess of 3,000 people in four years, half of which was in 2013 alone. In
2014, deaths from terrorism increased by 80% from 2013, with a total of 32,658
victims, some 78% of all deaths and 57% of all attacks occurred. With Iraq
continuing to be the country most impacted by terrorism with 9,929 terrorist
fatalities, the highest ever recorded in a single country.
CAUSES OF TERRORISM
Dissatisfaction over certain issues:- there may always be some difference of
opinion or disagreement between persons, societies, regions, groups,
provinces or countries, but some people could not reconcile the same and get
frustrated which ultimately resorts to lawlessness, looting, killing, kidnapping
and mass violence. Sometimes terrorism takes birth due to religious and
caste conflicts also.
Misuse of national and international machinery - national and International
governments often use their might where some other means could have done
well, party politics, partiality and biased decisions also responsible for this
severe problem.

Technological Development: - development in science and technology has

given us several destructive and improved arms and ammunitions which
have somehow reached in the hand of the outfits and thereby aggravating
the problems.
Injustice and Exploitation motive - the poor and less developed are still being
exploited by the so called advanced sectors and the former thinks that the
system can be set right by means of terrorism and muscle power.

GLOBAL RESPONSE
More than 140 countries have passed counter-terrorism laws since the
attacks of September 11, 2001, often with little regard for due process and other
basic rights.
The United Nations has helped rally international efforts for counterterrorism.
It now oversees sixteen conventions that target different aspects of terrorism,
including terrorist financing, hijacking, acquiring weapons of mass destruction, and
hostage taking.
The UN Security Council (UNSC) has strengthened the international legal
foundation for counterterrorism efforts by issuing numerous binding resolutions. To
oversee the implementation of the bedrock counterterrorism resolutions created
after September 11, the UNSC established the Counterterrorism Committee (CTC),
and later the CTC Executive Directorate (CTED). The CTC, composed of all fifteen
UNSC members, is tasked with assessing states' efforts to implement relevant
resolutions, evaluating gaps in state capacity, and facilitating donor coordination for
technical and financial counterterrorism assistance.
Terrorism continues to pose a major threat to international peace and security
and undermines the core values of the United Nations. Several international
organizations and even governments of the countries are making enough efforts to
safeguard public from terrorism.

IMPACT OF TERRORISM
Terrorism has occurred throughout history, but today the world is
experiencing a global rebirth of attacks. Today it no longer affects only small
societies, such as isolated third world countries who fell victim to regular terrorist
attacks, but the whole world is becoming more familiar with Arab and Muslim
names. The terrorist violence that is on the rise today has informed citizen all over
the world about different types of terrorism. Also with the resurgence the world is
experiencing of terrorism, the Nations have been to do what they can to eliminate
terrorism.
Terrorists attempt not only to create panic but also to weaken confidence in
the government and the political leadership of the target country. Terrorism
therefore is designed to have psychological effects that reach farther beyond the
impact on the immediate victims of an attack. Terrorists mean to frighten and
therefore scare a wider crowd, such as a rival ethnic or religious group, an entire
country and its political control, or the entire international community. Terrorist
groups are generally small and have few members, limited firepower, and other
resources. For this reason they rely on intense bloody and destructive acts of hitand-run violence to attract attention to their group and their cause. Through the
media they are able to create a larger voice for themselves and create hostilities

among
people.
The very flexibility and adaptability of terror throughout the years has
contributed to the confusion. Those seeking to disrupt, reorder or destroy the status
quo have continuously sought new and creative ways to achieve their goals.
Changes in the tactics and techniques of terrorists have been significant, but even
more significant are the growth in the number of causes and social contexts where
terrorism is used
WHAT CAN WE DO?
Every human has equal basic moral values and we possess the same
fundamental rights. Each of us must learn to understand the differences of our
cultures, religions, beliefs and human behaviors. We must think of the peace,
freedom and equality of all human beings, not just one group of people. Education is
a primary solution to terrorism. How? We must educate our people about the values
of peace and integrity. Open their eyes about the hideous effects of terrorism.
Knowledge, critical and creative thinking, the 3 Rs of reverence, respect, and
responsibility, and the tools for creating positive change are the pathways to a just
and healthy future.
To completely address the threats of terrorism we must eliminate the root of
it: The way this world is attacking terrorism is funny. Every country is doing
something to kill terrorism, but they still cannot eliminate all terrorist. They can kill
some terrorists today, but they cannot kill the other terrorist tomorrow or after
tomorrow. They should try to find the root of terrorism, and they have to eliminate
it. Black money is the main root cause of terrorism because terrorists can do
nothing without money, so the government should find who support the terrorist.
Lastly, we also should try to understand about terrorists. The solution is to
find out the problem why a terrorist doesn't feel guilty and why he was forced to be
a terrorist. It may be because some injustice thing was done to him. I still want to
believe that it may be conquered by love only.
