-Tell the class that we will be learning about ideas and how to
include them in our writing.
-Ask the students what they believe ideas are. (Small discussion)
-Bring in a real funnel to class.
-Place water into smaller container using the funnel.
-Explain to students that funnels can be use to take big things and
fit them into smaller containers. This is similar to writing- we need
to use a writer's funnel to narrow down our big ideas.
-Model to students writers funnel by picking the theme animals
and braking it as small as possible ex) animals-dog-German
Shepard etc.
-Pass out Writers Funnel Worksheets.
-Tell students to pick any theme they would like just like the one
we did together. Tell them to break it down as much as possible.
-After students are finished students will share with the class how
far they were able to break down their ideas.

-Divide class into groups for centers.


-Express to the class that the main focus today will be working on
ideas.
-Wrap up/clean
-Express to the class that if they did not finish their small activity i
the centers we will continue on Friday.

Drafts-Adding Ideas Trait

Lesson

-Tell students that today we will begin a new writing piece and
work on drafts as well as do a read aloud on a Dr. Seuss Book.
-Ask the students what they believe a draft is. (Small discussion)
-Review Ideas trait.
-Model to students how to write a draft based on an Idea ex) My
German Shepard, Toby. While writing a draft make sure to make
lots of grammatical errors and for it to be unorganized.
-Explain to the class that when forming a draft we dont concentrate
on perfection. We dont focus on the mistakes we do but getting an
Idea written down with details.
-Place all students in the carpet. Read the Dr. Seuss Book.
-While reading dont show the pictures to the student, instead ask
them to close their eyes and picture details read from the story.
-Ask students to draw what they pictured using lots of details.
-Afterwards, students will write about what they pictured while
listening to the story.
-Remind students to not worry about spelling for now because its a
draft.

-Tell students that today we will be revising our drafts.
-Ask students if they know what revision and editing is. (Small
discussion)
-Place teacher draft from yesterday to revise.
-Replace certain words with better vocabulary.
-Ask students what are good resources we can use to find new
vocabulary. Look for students answers: Dictionary, Word Wall,
Computer etc. (Model)
- Remove certain sentences that dont go with the rest of the paper.
(Model)
-Organize our details and ideas in a way that flows. (Model)
-Read draft out loud to catch any mistakes.
-Students will go to their seats and select the paper from their folder
to revise.
-They will look for words they can replace. They can use resources
from the classroom.
-Add/Remove sentences.
-They will read their drafts to a partner to catch any mistakes.
-Partners may give advice.
-Provide students with checklist for revision.

-Place teacher revised draft from yesterday to revise.
-Add punctuation and sound out words for correct spelling. (Model)
-Remove certain punctuation that dont belong there.(Model)
-Read paper out loud to catch any mistakes. As well as:
-Read the paper with expression. (Model)
-Students will go to their seats and select a story from their folder
to edit.
-Add punctuations/remove punctuations.
-They will read their papers with expression to a partner to catch
any mistakes.
-Partners will fill out peer editing checklist.
-Partners will give feedback/checklist to student.
-Students will write final draft (Publish)

-Form a discussion with the students on ways that we can publish
our papers. Look for answers such as: In the computer typing, using
bold illustrations, Sharing/reading our papers with expression.
-Model to students how to share our papers with the class, reading
with expression.
-Students will bring their published work and have a seat at the
carpet (Sharing station).
- Ask for volunteers that would like to share their stories.
-Have a small discussion on what students liked about other
students writing.
