Sushruta, a medical scholar, lived 2000 years ago. His work is compiled in a collection
called Sushruta-Samahita in which he describes over 120 surgical instruments, 300
surgical procedures and classifies human surgery in 8 categories. Because of his
numerous contributions to the science and art of surgery he is known by the title Father
of Surgery. Sushruta is also the father of plastic surgery and cosmetic surgery since his
technique of forehead flap rhinoplasty (repairing the disfigured nose with a flap of skin
from the forehead) that he used to reconstruct noses that were amputated 1 as a
punishment for crimes, is practiced almost unchanged in technique to this day. Sushruta
was also the first surgeon to encourage the practice of doing operations on objects such
as watermelons, clay pots and reeds2 as a training for the medicine man.

Source A tells me that the Tang Dynasty had advanced
technology. This can be supported by the picture which
shows Buddhist statues that are much larger than a human
being. This means that Tang Dynasty had advanced carving
tools and skilled craftsmen to create such large, detailed
statues.
Source A also tells me that the Tang Dynasty was a wealthy
society. This can be supported by the picture which shows
large Buddhist sculptures. This means that Tang Dynasty
had large sum of money to carry out such a large-scale
construction which needed a lot of manpower and carving
tools.
Accept any plausible answers.
What does Source B tell you about ancient Indian plastic surgery? Explain your answer.

Source A tells me that Sushruta had done an extensive
amount of research in the topic of medicine and surgery. The
source says in which he describes over 120 surgical
instruments, 300 surgical procedures and classifies human
surgery in 8 categories. This means that Sushruta took his
research seriously and that he had a lot of experience in
the surgical and medical area. He must have carried out
many operations before being able to write such a book.
Source A tells me that the medicine man had to go through
training first before becoming skillful at plastic surgery. The
source says that Sushruta was also the first surgeon to
encourage the practice of doing operations on objects such
as watermelons, clay pots and reeds 2 as a training for the
medicine man. This means that Sushruta had taught
others how to do operations and may have shared his
practices with others. He may have been part of a higher
institution of learning like a university.
