ASSIGNMENT QUESTION

PURPOSE
The purposes of this assignment are to enhance the learners ability to:
(i)
(ii)

analyse a companys external environment and to demonstrate the use of SWOT


analysis in a business situation and
argue the case for and against the corporate social responsibility (CSR) in a
business organisations.

REQUIREMENT
The assignment is divided into 2 parts. Students are required to answer BOTH parts.
PART 1

To answer PART 1 of the assignment question, students can choose either a local or an
international company as the focus of his/her study.
QUESTIONS

(a) Identify the mission, vision and goals of the selected company. Explain the
importance of the mission, vision and goals to the company.
(10 marks)
(b) Conduct an environmental analysis of the selected company.
(30 marks)

Note:
The following questions may be used as guides to help you in analysing the environment:
(i)
What are some key laws and regulations under which this company and industry
operate?
(ii)
How does the state of the economy influence the sales of this companys product?
(iii) What new technology strongly affect the company you have selected?
(iv)
What changes in the population might affect the companys customer base?
(v)
What changes in society affect the market for the companys product?
(vi)
How does the companys relationship with suppliers affect its profitability?
(vii) What companies compete with the firm you have selected? Do they compete on
price, on quality or on other factors?

(viii) Are new competitors to the company likely? Possible?

(c) Prepare a SWOT analysis for the selected company. Based on the SWOT analysis,
formulate the strategies for the company. Should the company continue or change its
current approach? Discuss.

PART 2
QUESTION
Should a business firm use its resources to engage in programs to promote what that business
firm perceives to be the public good? Strong arguments are made to support the notion that
firms should or should not expand company resources in pursuit of social welfare activities
that fall outside the scope of the firms business.
Look for the journal articles on the topic of Corporate Social Responsibility. Answer the
questions below:
(i)

What are the arguments for and against the concept of CSR? Where do you stand,
and why?
Give your opinions based on your readings of the literature reviews.
