CourseObjectives:Thefocusofthiscoursewillbetohelpthestudentunderstandandapplytheunderlying
principlesofOrganicChemistry.Thestudentwillbeabletoappreciatetherelationshipbetweenthestructure
ofanorganiccompoundorintermediate,anditsphysical,chemical,and/orspectroscopicproperties.Material
presentedinthiscourseprovidesthenecessaryfoundationforfurtheradvancedstudiesinOrganicChemistry
(Chemistry6942),includingthebasicmechanismsoforganicreactions,retrosynthesis,organicsynthesis,and
functionalgroupmanipulation.

General: Chemistry 6941 is the first class of a two semester sequencedesigned to give MSlevel studentsa
moreindepthlookatthefundamentalsoforganicchemistryandthereactionsthathavebeendevelopedfor
organicsynthesis.Theearlypartofthecoursewilldealwithphysicalorganicchemistry,i.e.thebasicideasof
structurethatleadtoreactivity.Thesecondportionoftheclasswillthenbeadetailedcoverageofimportant
organicreactions,includingtheirapplicationintheformationofcomplexmolecules,andwillincludedetailed
discussionofmodernmethodsthatareofparticularrelevancetomolecularassembly.
