SRIRAMARAMARAMA
In the long belt of Perambalur and Musiri, the need for
opening a high school was felt for a long time until the
enterprise
was
taken
up
by
Chettikkulam
P. M . Ve n k a ta c h a l a d u r a i
and
his
brother
P.V.Vijayavenkatachaladurai, both advocates.
In 1941, they endowed their lands 15 acres, overlooking
Perumal hills and built class rooms. With Sri N. Subbu Reddiar
as Head Master, the school functioned. In 1947, I completed
B.A & applied for a Teacher's post. There I met Sri Ranga
Rao, a senior teacher who became my mentor. He advised
me to love the Teacher's post and do justice for the post. I
took a vow to serve in the same school till retirement and
create a record.
I worked for 2 years and earned the goodwill of the
Management. They offered to depute me for B.T training at
Saidapet, Madras. I applied myself diligently for study and
passed. The class consisted of students ranging from the
age of 17 to 52. I copied the lessons diligently and earned the
goodwill of the English Professor S.Pazhanisamy Mudaliyar.
The year passed away soon & I passed in the first class. The
Management felt quite happy and issued me a permanent post.
Meanwhile, Dr. M.D. Pal completed his course in American
University and joined as the new Principal of Saidapet College.
He deputed a few teachers to T.T.V High school, Chintadripet
High School, Sowcarpet High school in addition to Model High
school, Saidapet & intensified teaching practice. It fell to my
lot to do teaching practice in Chintadripet High school under
Sri Doraikkannu Mudaliyar, M.A.LT. I gave model lessons
before the university commission and was graded A.
Meanwhile, Sri N. Subbu Reddiyar secured a Lecturer's
post in the Dr. Azhagappa Teacher's College, Karaikkudi and
Sri Anantachariyar was promoted as Head Master. The next
y e a r, S r i M . S . N a t e s a n w a s a p p o i n t e d H e a d M a s t e r.
Unfortunately he passed away in the saddle. The next senior
most Sri N.R.Jayaraman was promoted.
That year may be called the English Renaissance as

22

the honourable minister Sri C.Subramanyan took up charge

as Minister for Finance & Education. Then he wanted to
revamp the education system. He summoned Mr F.L.Billows
from the British Council, Chennai and requested him to
upgrade the teaching of English at the High School.
He selected 100 teachers for a training course. At that
time, Andhra was in Madras state. The six MLCs were
selected for the training. The other 94 seats were filled up by
the Educational Department.
Mr. S.Pazhalisamy Mudaliyar was the liaison officer.
He selected me also for the course as the junior-most
candidate. The course was held in the British council for one
month. My faith in Sri Ranga Rao's counsel became fortified.
At the end of the course, a certificate was given. This gave
me a chance of friendship with Messrs Prof. Alexander
G n a n a m u t h u , E . H . P a r a m e s w a r a n , R a j a I y e r, Tr i c h y
Krishnamoorthy and the Head Master of Kellet High School,
Chennai besides some Andhra friends.
The Madras government launched a program known
as The Madras Language Teaching Campaign in 2 phases primary and secondary courses under the tutorship of John
Bevan Sheppard.
Primarily
myself,
Sri
D.Mathrubhutam,
Sri P.Venkatachalam & Sri Thulasiram (deputy inspector of
schools cum departmental officer) were selected to undergo
3 months' training (primary course). Then some centers were
selected including Thuraiyur. 50 secendary grade school
teachers were selected from various elementary schools and
they were tutored. A flying squad from British Council came
and visited the centers at the closing of 7'o clock. They were
surprised at the coaching done in Thuraiyur and
recommended for the 2nd, 3rd & 4th courses. The coaching
time was between 5 & 7 pm on weekdays. Thuraiyur was
acclaimed as one of the best centers. Mr S.G.Back suggested
that he could recommend the willing people to undergo
PGDTE training by correspondence (in the Hyderabad
Institute for 2 years). I took the chance and applied. In a week's
time, I got admission. Oral courses were held in Madras

23

Centre for 2 years during vacations. At the end of the course,

I was selected to give the model lesson before the HOD,
English of the Madras University and the trainees for 2 hours
and it was adjudged as the best training. I was given the
Diploma PGDTE.
One evening, as I was crossing the correspondent Sri
P.M.V. Durai on the road, as usual, I saluted him. He instructed
me to meet him next morning. When I met him, he handed me
a cover. I took it respectfully. He told me to open and see. I did
so. It was a copy of the agreement. I asked him why he was
giving it. He said, "The agreement is a document two parties.
When it has been discharged by one, it has to be returned to
the party. You have discharged the clause in full. You are free
from today to seek job elsewhere." I said, "Such thought has
never come to my mind." He smiled and said that he was happy.
How meticulous his legal acumen!
E r e l o n g , S r i P. M . V. D u r a i pa s s e d a w a y a n d
Shri M.V.Natarajan became the correspondent. It was the same
golden period. Mr. V. Rangasamy became the Head Master as
Mr. N.R. Jayaraman retired. I was promoted as the Assistant
Head Master. For the first time, the annual sports day was held
outside Trichy (in Thuraiyur) as our playground was sufficient
for a district sport. Shri Muthunallappa reddiyar took up the
responsibility of getting Smt. Lourdhammal Simon (the then
Sports Minister of the Government of Tamilnadu) as the chief
guest. It colourfully went on well. Shri C.H. Subbu (the then
Physical Education Teacher) won laurels.
I was deputed to the Regional Institute of English,
Bangalore for 3 months. Again, it was my credit to be the first
of the 80 candidates. In the course, the Andhra ladies,
impressed by my teaching, requested Mr. Sheik Maula (the
Institute Director) to run extra classes for them in the separate
hostel every evening. As they wanted the coaching, it was
granted. Then, for 2 courses, my services were utilized for a
week each.
In 1970, I and Sri Aravamudan, the then Head Master of
Ambatthur High School and about 20 other teachers visited
the then President of India Dr. Radhakrishnan at his home. He

24

chatted with us for about 40 minutes and asked us about the

subject we taught. Then all of us said Mathematics. In the
course of our conversation, he dwelt upon the sacredness of
the teachers' profession - "A profession with no blasphemy a noble profession! It is a contented job. The central valuation
has to be carried out with great responsibility as it is the
evaluation of a boy's career. So it has to be done with
meticulous care. For teachers, further experience grows by
discussions in the evenings with fellow teachers. Above all,
the chief examiner should do cent per cent verification and
justify his position and the teacher has to love subjects and
teach the students conscientiously', said Dr. Radhakrishnan.
In 1976, the DEO of Lalgudi came for inspection and
told me personally that he recommended my name for the
State Award but somehow it was rejected. Then I asked him
of what avail the award would be when the DEO has
recommended. In 1977, the award came by telegram from
Mr. Joseph George, DEO, Ariyalur. I received the State Award
without any pomp. I got cash prize of rupees 500 from His
Excellency Prabhudas Patwari (the then Governor of
Tamilnadu. I gave this to the correspondent as it belonged to
the school. He was moved.
It was 1976 when there was a great furore of the HSC.
Luckily, our school was selected in the first list by the DEO of
the Lalgudi. In 1977, the course (HSC) was to be started. The
DEO came to Thuraiyur and personally counseled me to
upgrade my qualification. I appeared privately for MA
examination and passed it. In 1978, I was appointed as the
English teacher for the HSC.
Meanwhile, Sri K. Ramachandran of Mahadevi and
Sri. K. Durairaj of Singalanthapuram became Head Masters in
District Board Schools. They requested me to upgrade English
teaching for the SSLC and help their students. I gladly accepted
it. I used to go from Thuraiyur at 5.30 PM daily without prejudice
to my School work. This I did as a free service.
In the meantime, I also took lessons for the HSC Vocational stream teaching in Putthanaampatti. All this was
done without prejudice to my school work.

25

In 1978, I was selected as the Chief Examiner for HSC

every year until I retired in 1986.
Thus ends a humble teacher's life. All my life as a
teacher, I spent coaching the HARIJAN boys and the
scheduled tribe children of the tenth standard as a part of my
free service and pulled up their results in the public
examination.
Some of them are given below:
1.

Shri K.Guruvaiah, B.A, B.L, IPS, Retired Director General

of Police, Annanagar, Madras.

2.

S h r i A . Ve e r a p pa m , M . E , R e t i r e d C h i e f E n g i n e e r,

fulfill my promise to Sri Ranga Rao, my mentor.

I am ever grateful to my teachers, I am here thanks to them!

Only those who will risk going too far
Can possibly find out how far one can go
Said all-time great writer T.S. Eliot
Circa 1969 I started this journey as an idiot!
I am extending the great thought a bit:
When do those who risk going too far
Develop the trait of seeing, going far?
Who takes their vision to the horizons afar?
Who holds those tender hands, walking them?
Opening eyes of those greenhorns to their future
Who do not yet know what is latent in their nature?
Who prepares one in growing years to take those risks?
As I stepped out of my Alma Mater
Zamindars High School, in 1974
I had to leave Thuraiyur, my cocoon
I was embarking upon a journey too far
As I was exposed to harder situations in life
At college, at work, in myriad contexts of struggle and strife
I was challenged by dilemmas, choices heating me up,
needing cooling
My survival kit was intact: those 6 years of schooling!
Guided me from my past, my role models, my Gurus
Notably the HM Shri V. Rengaswamy for discipline and hard work
AHM Shri VJ Avadhani for selfless services and excellence
Mr. NS for scientific inquiry, logic and experiments
An army of Gurus became my permanent source of lifes
testaments
Risk is inherent in our choices at work or in life
It is our character that insures us against taking wrong risks
It is all about how our teachers shaped our personal values
During our growing years, grooming us to take right risks
Zamindars Higher Secondary School with its coveted lineage
Remains an epitome of virtues, even in this digital age

36

The role models there toil day in and day out with courage
Conviction committed to build character in leaders of new age
On this wonderful occasion of Platinum Jubilee of my great school
I most profoundly express my gratitude to every teacher I learnt from
My lifes shaped by every one of them;
that chalk dusts in me pretty cool
I got this far, as I was prepared to live well by the magical
Zamindars Team!

My heartiest congratulations to the entire Zamindars
Higher Secondary School family on this Platinum Jubilee
year! The very thought about this school kindles fond
memories in me. This school has been instrumental in
establishing a strong values system such as integrity,
discipline, humility, respect, and so on, amongst the
students. In my view, the key differentiators were the
passion and the sincerity of the headmasters, teachers and
support staff. All of them worked hard to give their best to
the students. Whatever I am today is primarily because of
the solid foundation that was laid in this school. A good mix
of extra-curricular activities such as sports, National Cadet
Corps (NCC) and Scouts were available apart of
academics. The infrastructure available was one of the best
at that time. It is very heartening to see what most of the
students have achieved in different fields. I am sure this
school will reach even more heights in the coming years
and decades. All the very best.

Hi Everyone, I feel proud to say that our entire family

(my brother and sisters) studied at Zamindars school. Highperforming school systems consistently do three things well:
1. They get the right people to become teachers (the quality
of an education system cannot exceed the quality of its
teachers).
2. They develop those people into effective instructors (the
only way to improve outcomes is to improve instruction).
3. They put in place systems and targeted support to ensure
that every child is able to benefit from excellent instruction
(the only way for the system to reach the highest
performance is to raise the standard of every student). I
still remember that our science teacher used to divide
the class into 5 groups and put a leader for each group
(obviously high performer will be the leader in each
group). Our monthly test mark average for each group
would be written on notice board. We used to pull up our
group members, work with them, help them, share them
our knowledge this is to improve the group average and
come up better than the other group. This brings healthy
competition and more than that he(the teacher) taught us
the group dynamics in the early 70. Yes, all these
wonderful teaching methodology followed way back in
1974. 1975. I am grateful and thankful to all my teachers.
School is good and effective if it is :
-

Be a Safe and Organized Place

Set High Expectations for Students
Have a Relatable Leader- Principal
State a Clear Mission - Monitor Students Progress
Provide the Opportunity to Learn
Build a True Partnership Between Home and School

I can say my school is one of the best in India and feel proud
to be an alumni of Zamindars school I pray God to give all
the very best to my school and happy learning for our kids.
Wish them all the very best.
- best regards Raju

I have passed out of ZHSS in the 1988 batch. I am
fortunate to have dedicated and caring teachers. No matter
how busy they are, they will always find time to give me extra
help, guidance and support. The Teachers there are really
approachable, just the kind every student wants to have. I
want to express my sincerest gratitude to my teachers
Mr.S. Natarajan, Mr. N. Soundarajan, Mrs. P. Saraswathi,
Mrs. K. Vasantha, Mrs. V. Saraswathi, Mr.T. Natarajan,
Mr. T. Krishnamoorthy and

Mr. Palanisamy. This is the high

time to honour the teachers for their excellent contribution to

the society. ZHSS holds true to its mission, provides a holistic
education and more conducive learning environment in which
students discover and develop their talents and abilities to
become better, stronger and successful individuals. ZHSS
encourages its students to aim high, work towards their
personal goals and character building with the encouragement
and support of school management, teachers and other
students. I wish ZHSS to continue to be the leading educational
institution of choice in theregion.

K. Balaji IAS,
Respected teachers of Zamindhar higher secondary
school, I am really thankful to the Headmaster of Zamindhar higher
secondary school for the opportunity given to me to associate
with the platinum jubilee celebrations of the school. 75 years is
not a small period for any school in the whole of this country.
This school was started at a time when this town and nearby
villages never had a good educational institution that could impart
quality education to children. Throughout these 75 years, this
school acted as a trusted and reliable school that has always
opened its doors to every other individual in need of education
without any discrimination and with no questions asked and with
zero expectation. And now am sure every family in Thuraiyur and
in nearby villages has got someone in their family educated in
this school and its students are making this school proud in
various corners of the world. Special mention should be made on
Zamindhars stress on sports and discipline too. In these times
when education is being commodified and seen as an opportunity
to reap commercial profits, the proud tradition of Zamindhar with
its emphasis on sports, character along with academic excellence
shall shine as an example on how education should be. And I
wish my school keepson making meaningful differences in the
lives of people associated with it and provide the same service it
has always provided.
Thanking you.
Yours sincerely,
K. Balaji, 2002 passed out,

S.Durairaj - Microsoft, USA.

I graduated from Zamindars Higher Secondary School,
and I continue to be impressed by the level of quality education
that I received from this institution. Studying in ZHSS prepared
me for my further studies and college work, allowing me to
excel in most subject matters, all due to the knowledgeable,
helpful, and all around excellent teachers that I had the
pleasure to know. I count ZHSS as one of the primary reasons
that I am successful today, working at the software giant,
Microsoft. Additionally, with regards to the medium ofEnglish,
that class was taught entirely in English, with exceptional
respects to accuracy and understanding, which has allowed
me to do well in America. A few teachers that I would like to
mention in particular that greatly helped me are the tenacious,
d e d i c a t e d , a n d p u n c t u a l M r. V. R a n g a s a m y, t h e b e s t
headmaster of my time, Mr. S. Natarajan, who taught English
in a comprehensible manner and provided free tuition to the
lesser privileged, Mr. T. Natarajan, who taught Chemistry in a
free-form, knowledgeable way, Mr. V.J. Avadhani, who was
recognised state-wide and was a one-in-a-million English
teacher, and Mr. K. Nallusamy, who was a Physics genius,
and was unbounded by the syllabus. The tradition of teaching
excellence, with the current headmaster Mr. S. Jayaraman and
staff, under the guidance of Mr. N. Muthu Kumar continues to
this day, a fact I am happy to hear. This school has allowed
students from all classes, and even illiterate backgrounds, to
get an equal opportunity to compete and be on level ground
with their better-off peers. The primary goal of this school is a
high standard of education, not personal profit. The discipline
and service present at this school is astounding, and I am very
grateful for the time I spent here.
