UNIT OF WORK: Confirmation

DURATION: 1-2 weeks

The whole liturgical life of the Church revolves around the Eucharistic sacrifice and the Sacraments. There are seven sacraments in the
Church: Baptism, Confirmation or Chrismation, Eucharist, Penance, Anointing of the Sick, Holy Orders and Matrimony. (CCC 1113)
The Sacraments of Initiation – Baptism, Confirmation and the Eucharist – lay the foundations of every Christian life. “The sharing in the divine
nature given to men through the grace of Christ bears certain likeness to the origin, development and nourishing of natural life. The faithful
are born anew by Baptism, strengthened by the sacrament of Confirmation and receive in the Eucharist the food of eternal life. By means of
these sacraments of Christian initiation, they thus receive in increasing measure the treasures of the divine and advance toward the perfection
of charity.”
Symbols and Rituals
In treating the rite of Confirmation, it is fitting to consider the sign of anointing and what it signifies and imprints: a spiritual seal. Anointing, in
Biblical and other ancient symbolism, is rich in meaning: oil is a sign of abundance and joy; it cleanses (anointing before and after a bath) and
limbers (the anointing of athletes and wrestlers); oil is a sign of healing, since it is soothing to bruises and wounds; and it makes radiant with
beauty, health and strength. (CCC 1293)
Anointing with oil has all these meanings in the sacramental life. The pre-baptismal anointing with the oil of catechumens signifies cleansing
and strengthening; the anointing of the sick expresses healing and comfort. The post-baptismal anointing with sacred chrism in Confirmation
and Ordination is the sign of consecration. By Confirmation Christians, that is those who are anointed, share more completely in the mission
of Jesus Christ and the fullness of the Holy Spirit with which he is filled, so that their lives may give off “the aroma of Christ.” (CCC 1295)
The consecration of the sacred Chrism is an important action that precedes the celebration of Confirmation, but is in a certain way part of it. It
is the Bishop who, in the course of the Chrism Mass of Holy Thursday, consecrates the sacred chrism for his whole diocese. (CCC 1297)
In the Roman Rite the Bishop extends his hands over the whole group of the confirmands. This is known as the laying of hands. Since the
time of the apostles this gesture has signified the gift of the Spirit. The Bishop invokes the outpouring of the Spirit in these words:
All powerful God, Father of our Lord Jesus Christ,
By water and the Holy Spirit
You freed your sons and daughters from sin
And gave them new life.
Send your Holy Spirit upon them
To be their helper and guide.
Give them the spirit of wisdom and understanding,
the spirit of right judgment and courage,
the spirit of knowledge and reverence.
Fill them with the spirit of wonder and awe in your presence.

We as this through Christ our Lord. (CCC 1299)
The essential rite of the sacrament is as follows. In the Latin rite, “the sacrament of Confirmation is conferred through the anointing with
chrism on the forehead, which is done
by the laying on of the hand, through the words: ‘Accipe signaculum doni Spiritus Sancti’ (Be sealed with the Gift of the Holy Spirit.) (CCC
The Imposition of hands is rightly recognized by the Catholic tradition as the origin of the Sacrament of Confirmation, which in a certain way
perpetuates the grace of Pentecost in the Church. (CCC1288)
The sign of peace that concludes the rite of the sacrament signifies and demonstrates ecclesial communion with the bishop and with all the
faithful. (CCC 1301)
In the Old Testament the prophets announced that the Spirit of the Lord would rest on the hoped-for Messiah for his saving mission. The
descent of the Holy Spirit on Jesus at his Baptism by John was the sign that this was He who was to come, the Messiah, the Son of God. He
was conceived of the Holy Spirit: his whole life and his whole mission are carried out in total communion with the Holy Spirit whom the Father
gives him “without measure” (CCC 1286)
This fullness of the Spirit was not to remain uniquely the Messiah’s, but was to be communicated to the whole messianic people. On several
occasions Christ promised this outpouring of the Spirit, a promise which he fulfilled first on Easter Sunday and then more strikingly at
Pentecost. Filled with the Holy Spirit the apostles began to proclaim “the mighty works of God,” and Peter declared this outpouring of the Spirit
to be the sign of the messianic age. Those who believed in the apostolic preaching and were baptized received the gift of the Holy Spirit in
their turn. (CCC 1287)
Effects of the Sacrament of Confirmation
It is evident from its celebration that the effect of the sacrament of Confirmation is the full outpouring of the Holy Spirit as once granted to the
apostles on the Day of Pentecost. (CCC 1302)
Like Baptism which it completes, Confirmation is given only once, for it too imprints on the soul and indelible spiritual mark, the “character,”
which is the sign that Jesus Christ has marked a Christian with the seal of his Spirit by clothing him with power from on high so that he may
be his witness. (CCC 1304)
Preparation for Confirmation should aim at leading the Christian toward a more intimate union with Christ and a more lively familiarity with the
Holy Spirit – his actions, his gifts, and his biddings – in order to be more capable of assuming the apostolic responsibilities of Christian life. To
this end, catechesis for Confirmation should strive to awaken a sense of belongings to the Church of Jesus Christ, the universal Church as
well as the parish community. The latter bears special responsibility for the preparation of confirmands. (CCC 1309)
Confirmation brings an increase and deepening of baptismal grace:
- it roots us more deeply in the divine filiation which makes us cry, “Abba!
- it unites us more firmly to Christ
- it increases the gifts of the Holy Spirit in us
- it renders our bond with the Church more perfect
- it gives us a special strength of the Holy Spirit to spread and defend the
faith by word and action as true witnesses of Christ, to confess the name of

Christ boldly and never to be ashamed of the cross. (CCC 1303)

T will begin with an introduction activity to the Sacrament of Can be used as whole class Wordle
Confirmation, creating a brainstorm of all the words, symbols pre-assessment
and rituals that come to mind when students think of knowledge.
Confirmation. T will write answers in one colour and date the
corner of the Brainstorm. (Brainstorm can be revisited at
middle/end of unit to add new information learnt.)
T will show Ss their class ‘Confirmation’ website and they will
view the video of the Pope’s meaning of the Confirmation.
During the video Ss will write down new words on scrap paper,
once the video is complete we will create a word wall for the
class, especially for the words/phrases, ‘Counsel’, ‘Fortitude’,
‘Piety’, ‘Fear of the Lord’. Ss will research the meanings of at
least 5 of the words.
Ss will go onto the ‘Confirmation’ website and go to the Activity Can be used as pre1 tab. This tab has a link to create a ‘Wordle’ word map of the assessment of individual
words surrounding Confirmation. Ss will create their own and student’s knowledge.

Ss watch video on ‘Confirmation’ website, Activity 2 tab, and
discuss what they have seen or felt while watching this video.
T poses questions such as, “What is the purpose of
Confirmation?” “What is the process, what order do the actions
of Confirmation occur?” “What may be some of Satan’s
temptation in your life?” “What can we do to live with grace and
the Holy Spirit?”
In pairs Ss research The Rite of Confirmation and create a list
of the process of Confirmation. Ss record their list in R.E. book.
Ss use knowledge from research and video to complete the
following task. Ss are given an A4 sheet with 8 boxes, in these
boxes they will draw a comic strip of what the process and
meaning of Confirmation is to them. T will select Ss to share
and explain their work.

scripture passage Acts 2:1-13 and then watch the video. T will
instruct them to listen for symbols of the Holy Spirit within the

the KLA of Creative Arts, outcome VAS3.2. Student will be
designing and creating their own stain glass artwork using
black paper, cellophane and clear contact. Ss will follow the
instructions listed on the website but are also able to research
more techniques on google. The instructions supplied are:
1. Use a symbol to trace onto paper or free hand sketch the
symbol onto black paper.
2. Ensure your lines are at least 1 cm thick so that the outline
doesn't break.
3. Stick your outline onto a piece of clear contact film big
enough to fit the whole outline.
4. Begin adding coloured cellophane to the sections of your
artwork, until all the stick area within the outline is covered.
5. Trim the excess film from the edges.
6. Hang your artwork on a window that gets a lot of sun. Marvel
at the beautiful shadows created from your artwork.

T will explain to Ss that people receiving their Confirmation
choose a Saint to guide them into Christianity, and that people
often choose Saints based on the actions and characteristics
or people that they aspire to be like.
Ss will go to their class confirmation website and go to Activity
4 tab. They have been supplied a list from a similar aged
blogger, of Saints from all different categories, the blogger
explains how she chose her Saint because she reminded the
blogger of herself.



Ss will be given time to research the Saint on this site and
choose their favourite.
Ss will then begin a better research on their Saint, looking for; -Name
-Birthdate/Date of Passing
-The actions/behaviours/messages that made them a Saint
-Why they like them
-Any other information they found interesting.
Ss will create a 2-3 minute slideshow on their Saint based on
the information found, it will be assessed on presentation and
information. (This could be linked to a Technology outcome.)

Confirmation Website
Ss will read 1 Corinthians 12: 4-11 and identify the 7 Gifts of the
Holy Spirit.
T will begin a discussion on the meaning of each individual gift.
Ss will then have the choice of completing a digital poster, in
pairs or individually. T will create a brainstorm on the
whiteboard of what a good advertisement includes, e.g. clear
messages, eye catching pictures, catchy slogans etc. (Link to
English KLA for writing purposes.)
T can assess Ss knowledge
Ss will choose one gift to base their poster on and create an of what their understanding
advertisement for what they think that gift looks like for fellow of the chosen gift is.
Ss will download their poster to be printed.

Lesson 1:

Students could’ve been introduced to some of the Scripture to begin with and to understand the background behind Confirmation.

A self-assessment could’ve been used at the end of the task to determine how students feel their knowledge is progressing of Confirmation.

Students enjoy creating comic strips and the video worked as a stimulus for the student’s comic strips.

Lesson 3:
What could’ve been different?
Students could’ve been given more examples of Scripture that showed the Holy Spirit and other actions of Confirmation, in particular the Scripture
behind the anointing of the oil.
What worked?
Linking to the Creative Arts syllabus made students more engaged in the activity and the outcome of stained glass artwork looks good.
Lesson 4:
What could’ve been different?
Students could’ve been given a model for the presentation.
What worked?
Having students read the blog from the perspective of a similar aged student made them more interested.

Students could’ve been given more examples of Gifts of the Holy Spirit in Scripture.
