}

Thus, in the same way that We were graceful towards Him by delivering him from prison, We
established Joseph in the land, the land of Egypt, that he may settle in it wherever he wished, after
[having suffered] hardship and imprisonment. According to the story, the king crowned him, gave
him a signet-ring to wear, and appointed him in place of the Court officer, whom he removed from
his pos

a wife. He [Joseph] discovered that she was [still] a virgin and she bore him two children. He
[Joseph] established justice in Egypt and people became subject to him. We confer Our mercy on
whomever We will and We do not waste the wage of the virtuous.

Yet the wage of the Hereafter is better, than the wage of this world, for those who believe and are
God-fearing. And so the years of drought arrived and afflicted the land of Canaan and Syria.

supposed that he had died. They spoke to him in Hebrew and he said to them, as if reproaching

Thus he sent him with them.

He commanded him not to tell them anything. he put the drinking-cup.y ou a r es ur e l y t hi e v e s ! ’ {                                                     } T he ys a i d. [about ]God’ si ns pi r i ngHi se l e c t . c omi ngt owa r dst he m. Then a crier shouted. and he [Joseph] agreed with him that he would devise a trick to keep him [Benjamin] with him.i nt hewa yofe nv y i ng us. {                                                         ۤ                             ۤ            ٰ                       } And when they entered to Joseph. And verily he was possessed of knowledge. he took his brother i nt ohi sa r ms .t he r e f or edonotde s pa i r . a golden cup studded with jewels. out of affection [for them]. into the saddlebag of his brother.c a r a v a n. Surat Yusuf. but most of mankind — and they are the disbelievers — do not know. tafsir. because We had taught him. ar-Ra’ d & Ibraheem 7 was his desire to fend off the evil eye [from them]. ‘ Wha ti si tt ha ty oua r emi s s i ng ? ’ {                                                            ‫ﭐ‬                           } Taken from. y ourbr ot he r . a f t e r . [for] the stolen item. tafsir. t ha thebee ns l a v e d— this is then reiterated by His words: He.weha v ene v e r stolen [anything]. [with such] a r e qui t a l .‘ wea r ec e r t a i nl ynott hi e v e s ’ . the thief.i fy oupr ov et o ha v ebee nl i a r s ? ’ . and nothing else: this was the customary practice of the family of Jacob.‘ Wea r emi s s i ngt hek i ng ’ sg obl e t . that is.‘ S o. off ood[ s uppl i e s ] .‘ Hi sr equi t a l( qā l ūj a z ā ’ uhu:t hes ubj e c t . ’ ( t a ’ L l ā hi i sa noa t h.T he yt huspe r mi t t e dJ os e pht oha v et he i r saddlebags searched.t hec r i e ra ndhi sme n. t he[ c a me l ’ s ]l oa d.a nd[ i f ]i ti sf ounda mongy our belongings? {           ‫ﭐ‬            ٰ                                                           } T he ys a i d. 8 {                       ‫ﭐ‬                                                 ‫ﭐ‬            } T he ys a i d. shall be the requital for it.

[ a c c or di ng ]t othe laws of the king of Egypt — since his [ at hi e f ’ s ]r e qui t a l a c c or di ngt ohi sl a wwoul dha v ebe enabe a t i nga ndape na l t yoft wi c e[ t hev a l ue of] the stolen item.hewa sonl ya bl et ot a k ehi m wi t hGod’ swi l l . but not enslavement — unless God willed.God.Tafsir al-Jalalayn. the drinking-c up. then he pulled it. [thus] We taught him how to devise a plot to take his brother. We raise by degrees whom We will (read with a g e ni t i v ea nne x a t i on. Surat Yusuf. da r a j ā t i ma nna s hā ’ . says: Thus. Joseph.com . as a slave. exalted be He.i not he rwor ds . tafsir. i nt e r ms of knowledge. better than him [and so on] until it ends with God. ar-Ra’ d & Ibraheem                                  ‫ﭐ‬                        ‫ﭐ‬                                                          ٰ                                ‫ﭐ‬                                                       } {                              9 Ands ohebe g a nwi t ht he i rs a c k s .outofhi sbr ot he r ’ ss a c k .byGod’ s inspiring him to ask his brothers [about the nature of requital] and their responding according to [what is decreed by] their customary practice. is one who knows better.a nds e a r c he dt he m. and above every man of knowledge.l e s thebea c c us e d [of the theft]. [through such] contrivance. as [We did] with Joseph.be f or ehi sbr ot her ’ ss a c k . on a c c ountoft he f t . Juza’ [13]. could not have taken his brother.e x a l t e dbeHe. did We contrive for Joseph. or[ s i mpl y ]wi t hnuna t i on. a c c or di ngt ot hek i ng ’ sl a w. from among creatures. he. for him to be taken according to the law of his fa t he r[ J a c ob] . da r a j ā t i nma nna s hā ’ ) . {                             ‫ﭐ‬                                                                                                                             ۤ       } Taken from.

Juza’ [13]. in other words. ar-Ra’ d & Ibraheem 10 T he ys a i d.l o!heha saf a t he r . so take one of us. [understand ita s ]na ‘ ūdhubi ’ L l ā hi .a na g e dma n. in his place. Surat Yusuf.‘ Godf or bi d( ma ‘ ā dha ’ L l ā hi .‘ di s c l os e i t ’ ]r e f e r st ot hewor d[ s ]i nhi s[ f ol l owi ng ]s a y i ng ) .J os e ph— he had stolen a golden idol from his maternal grandfather and smashed it.‘ I fhei ss t e a l i ng . the verb having been omitted and placed in a genitive annexation with its direct object.a nd who finds solace in him from [the anguish he feels for] his dead son. tafsir.wi t hi nhi ms e l f :‘ Y oua r eawor s ec a s e. {           ‫ﭐ‬                                                                               ‫ﭐ‬          ٰ           } T he ys a i d.[ l i t . {                                                                                  ‫ﭐ‬                } Hes a i d.com . enslave him.‘ OCour tof f i c e r . instead of him: indeed we see that you are a mongt hev i r t uous ’ .t ha ti s . manifest it. because of your stealing a brother of yours from your father. than Joseph and his brother.i si nt hea c c us a t i v ebec a us ei ti sa verbal noun.abr ot he rofhi ss t ol ebe f or e ’ .

pa r twi t h. through the deliverance of my brother. the predicate of which is min qa bl .Tafsir al-Jalalayn. a covenant. in other words [understand it as me a ni ng ]y unā j ība ‘ duhum ba ‘ da n. concerning your brother. to return to him. [in other words it is] a subject. Juza’ [13]. ar-Ra’ d & Ibraheem s t ol e[ ourpr oper t y ] ’ . s a i d:‘ Ar ey ounota wa r et ha t your father has taken a solemn pledge.y ours onha s indeed stolen and we testified.T hemos ts e ni oroft he m. t hi sl a nd.com . [the most senior of them] in opinion — J uda h. and He is the best. {                                                                             ‫ﭐ‬                ٰ                     ٰ         ۤ     ‫ﭐ‬   } Goba c kt oy ourf a t he ra nds a y .“ Oourf a t he r . and formerly (wa-mi nqa bl umā :t hemāi se x t r a )y ouf a i l e dr e g a r di ngJ os e ph?( buti t[ t hemā ]i sa l s o said to be relating to the verbal action. be i ngc a r e f ul nott ol i e . 11   ٰ        ‫ﭐ‬                                                        ‫ﭐ‬                                                      ۤ                                                               ‫ﭐ‬           } {          ‫ﭐ‬                       ‫ﭐ‬              ۤ      ۤ           So when they despaired of [moving] him. t hel a ndofE g y pt . or God judges for me.onl yr e g a r di ngwha twek new. Surat Yusuf. against hi m.‘ onec onf e r r i ngwi t ht heot he r ’ ) .i n years — Reuben — or.f r om t hec e r t a i nt yofha v i ngs e e nt he[ k i ng ’ s ]c upi nhi s Taken from. from you by God. they withdrew to confer privately [together] (najiyyan is a verbal noun that can be used to refer to one person or more. the fairest. ‘ f or mer l y ’ ) . tafsir. of judges. S oI wi l l ne v e rl e a v e. unt i l myf a t he rpe r mi t s me.f ort he nt r ul y— if we were to take anyone other than him — wewoul dbee v i l doe r s ’ .

we would not have taken him [with us to Egypt]. Yet comely patience. Juza’ [13]. send forth [someone] to ask its people. and the caravan.Tafsir al-Jalalayn.S ot he ywe ntba c kt ohi ma nd told him as much.a ndy ou did it: he accused them because of what had happened with them before concerning Joseph. tafsir. {       ‫ﭐ‬          ‫ﭐ‬                                                 ‫ﭐ‬                                                            } ‘ Na y . with which we approached — and these were ag r oupofCa na a ni t e s . {                    ‫ﭐ‬                       ‫ﭐ‬                ٰ       ٰ                   ٰ         } Andhet ur ne da wa yf r om t hem. will be my [course of] patience! It may be that God will bring them. {                                         ۤ    ‫ﭐ‬         ‫ﭐ‬                    ‫ﭐ‬           ‫ﭐ‬          } And ask the city in which we were — namely Egypt — in other words.ofmypr edi c a me nt . we could not have guarded against the Unseen.a l l[ ba c k ]t ome .S ur e l ywes pea kt het r ut h”’ .i nwha twes a y .ha v ea dor ne d[ f ory ou] . ar-Ra’ d & Ibraheem 12 saddlebag. that which was hidden from us.myg r i e ff orJ os e ph! ’ ( y āa s a f ā :t he[ f i na l ]a l i f[ ofa s a f ā ]ha st a k e nt hepl a c eoft he[ pos s e s s i v e ]y ā ’ ofg e ni t i v ea nne x a t i on Taken from.‘ buty ours oul sha v ebe g ui l e dy oui nt o.I nde e dHei st heKnower . Surat Yusuf. the men of the caravan. when we gave our pledge: had we known that he would steal.t heWi s e ’ .i nHi s actions.‘ Al a s .nol ong e ra ddr e s s i ngt he m.a nds a i d.s ome t hi ng . Joseph and hi st wobr ot he r s .com . ’hes a i d.

Surat Yusuf. ont hev e rge ofpe r i s hi ng .t ot he m:‘ Ic ompl a i nofmya ng ui s h— (bathth is) severe grief. which cannot be endured unless it is proclaimed [yubaththu] to others — and grief only to God.t he i r dark colour was effaced and became white on account of his tears.Tafsir al-Jalalayn. y ouwi l l ne v e rc ea s er eme mbe r i ngJ os e phunt i l y oua r ec ons ume d. go and enquire about Joseph and his brother. anguished and grief-stricken. and do not despair of God’ s[ g r a c i ous ]S pi r i t .Andhi se y e st ur ne dwhi t e . not to any other than Him.on a c c ountofy ouri l l ne s s( i t[ ha r a da n. ar-Ra’ d & Ibraheem 13 [ s c . seek news of them. tafsir. [and that is] that J os e ph’ sdr e a mi st r uea ndt ha thei sa l i v e .i not he rwor ds[ i tme a ns ]y āhuz nī[ ‘ Omys or r ow’ ] ) . for it is worth complaining to Him.com . Juza’ [13].y āa s a f ī ] . {           ‫ﭐ‬                                 ٰ                                          } T he ys a i d. {                        ‫ﭐ‬                      ‫ﭐ‬                                        } Hes a i d. for him. [ of ]t hede a d. T he nhes a i d: {           ‫ﭐ‬          ‫ﭐ‬           ‫ﭐ‬                                  ‫ﭐ‬                                                                   ‫ﭐ‬       ٰ   } O my sons.Hi sme r c y . and I know from God what you do not know.‘ c ons ume d’ ]i sa v e r ba lnoun e qua l l y [ a ppl i c a bl e ]t oonepe r s onormor e)ory oua r eoft hos ewhoper i s h’ . with grief. ‘ ByGod. Taken from.I nde e dnonedespairs of the [gracious] Spirit of God save the di s be l i e v i ngf ol k ’ : a nds ot he yde pa r t e dt oE g y pt[ t ol ook ]f orJ os e ph. but not manifesting his grief. such that he was [filled] with suppressed agony.

after having separated him from hisbr ot her . Juza’ [13]. J os e ph? ’ .Tafsir al-Jalalayn. whi l ey ouwe r ei g nor a nt ? ’ . He has been gracious. and we have come with reject merchandise. by overlooking the worthlessness of our merchandise. oppressing him. complete.Hes a i d. for us the measure and be charitable to us. ofwhe r et hea f f a i rofJ os e phwi l l l e a d? {           ‫ﭐ‬                      ‫ﭐ‬                                                  ‫ﭐ‬                    ٰ                                               ۤ       } They said — after recognising him by his noble traits — c a ut i ous l y[ i nqui r i ng ] :‘ I si tr e a l l y( r e a da innaka. tafsir. a ndt hi si smybr ot he r .Her e wa r dst he m:he[ J os e ph]t hust ookpi t yon them and he was overtaken by compassion [for them] and removed the partition between them and himself. or by not pronouncing the second.i nr e buk e :‘ Doy our e a l i s ewha ty oudi dt oJ os eph. {                                                                            } T he n. Surat Yusuf. to us.t ot he m.mi s f or t une . and his brother.ha sbe f a l l e nus and our family. either pronouncing both hamzas. ‘ Ia m[ i nde e d]J os e ph.hung e r . by bringing [us] together. but in both cases inserting an ali f )y ou.com . refused by any person who sees it.Godha st r ul y shown favour. because of its worthlessness — it consisted of counterfeit dirhams or something else — so fill up.t he ys a i d. t r ul yGodr e qui t e st hec ha r i t a bl e ’ . ar-Ra’ d & Ibraheem {              ‫ﭐ‬             ‫ﭐ‬                                  ‫ﭐ‬                                                 ‫ﭐ‬                            ‫ﭐ‬          ٰ                                      } 14 Ands owhe nt he ye nt e r e dt ohi m. Verily if one fears. [if] one Taken from.‘ OCour tof f i c e r .hes a i d.i nt hewa yofbe a t i ng [him] and selling [him] and otherwise.

ar-Ra’ d & Ibraheem 15 fears God.com . what happens to him. the one he wore when he was thrown into the fire. {          ‫ﭐ‬                          ‫ﭐ‬                  ‫ﭐ‬                           } Hes a i d.i nt hi s[ r e s pec t ]( t heov e r tnoun[ a l -muhs i nī n. God does not waste the wage of those who are v i r t uous ’ .Tafsir al-Jalalayn. and they told him that his eyesight had gone.‘ T he r es ha l lbenor e pr oa c h.‘ t hev i r t uous ’ ]ha sr e pl a c e dt he[ t hi r d person] pronominalisation).‘ ByGod. and He is the Most Merciful of the merciful. although any other day would have been more appropriate [for them to be reproached on].ony out hi sda y— he specifically mentions this [day] because it was [the day] when they expected to be reproached. God will forgive you. Surat Yusuf.a nd indeed we (wa-i n:i ni ss of t e ne d.t r ul yGodha spr e f e r r e dy ouov erus .[ no]bl a me . It [the shirt] had come from Paradise: Gabriel commanded him [Joseph] to send it off [to Jacob] Taken from. s i nf ul t owa r dsy oua ndt r e a t edy oudi s g r acefully. {                                      ‫ﭐ‬                     ‫ﭐ‬            } T he ys a i d. {                                                          ٰ                     ٰ                      ‫ﭐ‬  } He [Joseph] asked them about his father. tafsir. Juza’ [13].‘ i nde e dwe ’ )ha v ebe e n e r r i ng ’ .wi t hk i ng s hi pa ndi not he rwa y s . and endures. And so he said: Go with this shirt of mine — and this was the shirt of Abraham. he [Joseph] had it around his neck when he was at the bottom of the well.i not he rwor ds[ i ti sunde r s t ooda s ]i nnā .

to those of hi ss onsa ndt he i rc hi l dr e npr e s e nt . a c r os sadi s t a nc eoft hr e eore i g htormor eda y s ’j our ne y . came. and your [enduring] hope of encountering him [again] despite the length of time [that has passed]. and whenever it is cast upon a sufferer.i ny our excessive adoration of him. it heals him — a ndl a yi tonmyf a t he r ’ sf a c e.t ohi m:‘ ByGod.y oure r r or . Judah.y oua r ec e r t a i nl yi ny ourmi s g ui da nc e . he cast the shirt. Surat Yusuf. after he had [previously] brought him grief — he laid it. their father said. a ndhewi l l r e c ov e rhi ss i g ht .com . {                        ‫ﭐ‬                ۤ                                      ‫ﭐ‬              ٰ                     ‫ﭐ‬                    } Then.[ i fonl y ]y ou[ di dnot ]r e g a r dmea sf ool i s h.ofol d’ . ar-Ra’ d & Ibraheem saying that the scent of Paradise lingers in it. 16 {                                                                 ‫ﭐ‬                 } And as the caravan set forth. Juza’ [13]. with the shirt — he had [been the one who] brought the blood-stained shirt.y ouwoul dbe l i e v e me.Tafsir al-Jalalayn.i f onl yy oudi dnott hi nkmedot i ng ’ . tafsir.‘ T r ul yIs e ns et hes c e ntofJ os e ph— which the east wind had br oug htt ohi m. on his face and he Taken from. wi t hGod’ spe r mi s s i on. when (fa-l a mmāan: an is extra) the bearer of good tidings. a ndbr i ngmea l l y ourf ol k ’ . and so now he wished to bring him joy. leaving behind the palm fields of Egypt. {         ‫ﭐ‬                        ‫ﭐ‬            } T he ys a i d.

Hes a i d. “ I nde edIk nowf r om Godwha ty oudonotk now? ” ’ {                                             ‫ﭐ‬            ٰ           } 17 T he ys a i d.com . Juza’ [13]. ‘ Di dInots a yt oy ou.a nds a i d. They then departed for Egypt. in his tent.t heMe r c i f ul ’ : he [Jacob] put off this [plea of forgiveness] until [the last hour] before dawn. {              ‫ﭐ‬                         ‫ﭐ‬                               ٰ            ٰ                       } And when they entered to Joseph. Surat Yusuf. t r ul yweha v ebe e ns i nf ul ’ . or [he put it off] until the eve of Friday.‘ As s ur e dl yIs ha l l a s kf or g i v e ne s sf ory ouofmyL or d. ‘ Oourf a t he r . in order to be closer to [the likelihood of] it being accepted.Tafsir al-Jalalayn. {       ‫ﭐ‬          ‫ﭐ‬               ۤ                               } Hes a i d.              ‫ﭐ‬                         ‫ﭐ‬                       ۤ                                                                              ٰ          ٰ                                     ‫ﭐ‬                          } {       ‫ﭐ‬          ‫ﭐ‬                                            ۤ                                  ‫ﭐ‬                 Taken from. and Joseph sat down on his throne. his father and his mother — or [and] his maternal aunt — i nt ohi sa r ms . he took his parents.t ot he m:‘ E nt eri nt oE g y pt . a s kf or g i v e ne s sf orusofours i ns .L o!Hei st heF or g i v i ng . ar-Ra’ d & Ibraheem r e g a i ne dhi ss i g ht . and they entered. tafsir. where Joseph and the senior courtiers came out to meet them.i fGodwi l l .i ns a f e t y ’ .

from among my fathers. prostrating before him — a prostration that was [actually] a bowing down. or 40. he longed for the everlasting kingdom and said: My Lord. or for 17 years.‘ Of a t he r . {         ‫ﭐ‬                                      ‫ﭐ‬            ‫ﭐ‬                    ‫ﭐ‬      ٰ    ٰ  ‫ﭐ‬                ‫ﭐ‬                                     ‫ﭐ‬                         } When he was nearing his end. Guardian of my best interests. of the heavens and the earth! You are my Protector. in this world a ndt heHe r e a f t e r . ar-Ra’ d & Ibraheem 18 And he raised his parents. since He brought me out of the prison — hedi dnots a y‘ outoft hewe l l ’ . this was their standard [form of] greeting a tt ha tt i me . He [Joseph] then returned to Egypt and remained [alive] for another 23 years. Surat Yusuf. or 80 years.Tafsir al-Jalalayn. upon the throne. made trouble.T a k eme[ i nde a t h]t oY oui ns ubmi s s i on[ t oY ou]a ndj oi nmet ot her i g ht e ous ’ . Juza’ [13]. Truly He is the Knower. The duration of his separation [from Joseph] had been 18. indeed You have given me [something] of sovereignty and You have taught me the interpretation of events.I nde e dmyL or d has made it true. he seated them next to him. between me and my brethren. the Wise. that is. realising that he would not remain [alive] forever. He lived after that for another week or more. and so he [Joseph] himself went and buried him there. Truly my Lord is Subtle in [bringing about] what He will. Creator.com . and they fell down. His father [Jacob] remained with him for 24 years. his parents and brothers. of His creatures.T he nhes a i d. And indeed He has been gracious to me. tafsir. When death approached him. in His actions. Originator.t hi si st hei nt e r pr e t a t i onofmyv i s i onofol d.i n[ as howof ]ma g na ni mi t y . the ability to explain dreams.l e s thi sbr ot he r sf ee la s ha med— and has brought you from the desert after Satan had incited ill feeling. He died at the age of 120 Taken from. he charged Joseph to take him and bury him by his father [Isaac]. not placing their foreheads down [on the ground].

in other words. what has been hidden from you O Muhammad (s). {                                                                       } Nor do you ask them any wage. which is mentioned of the matter of Joseph. indicating the Oneness of God. you were not present among them to know their story and so tell it to others: knowledge of it has come to you through revelation. [eventually] they placed him in a marble coffin and buried him at the top of the Nile so that both banks would be blessed [by his body] — Glory be to the One Whose Kingdom never ends. for you were not with them. the people of Mecca. Juza’ [13].t opl ota g a i ns thi m. The Egyptians were very covetous with regard to his grave.t ha ti s . namely.com . is of the tidings. of the Unseen. the tales. Surat Yusuf. which they witness. against him. is there in the heavens and the earth which they pass by. {                             ۤ                                                           ‫ﭐ‬                       } That.Tafsir al-Jalalayn. i sbutar e mi nder . and schemed. t oa l l t hewor l ds . which We reveal to you. however eager you might be. wi t hJ os e ph’ sbr ot he r s . tafsir. that is. Taken from. ar-Ra’ d & Ibraheem 19 years.[ whe n]t he y resolved upon it. {                                ‫ﭐ‬               } Yet. most people. that they believe. t heQur ’ ā n. fori t . a na dmoni t i on. will not believe. not reflecting upon it.t ha ti s . that you should take.whe nt he ya g r e e dupont he i rpl a n.[ f or ]t heQur ’ ā n— it. but disregard!. {                                               ‫ﭐ‬    ٰ      ٰ  ‫ﭐ‬                        } And how many a sign.

being upon sure knowledge. to Him.Tafsir al-Jalalayn. [whoever] believes in me (man i t t a ba ‘ a nīi sas uppl e me ntt oa nā .‘ I ’ .                       ‫ﭐ‬                                ‫ﭐ‬                                     ‫ﭐ‬                      ٰ      ‫ﭐ‬                         ۤ                                            } {                          ‫ﭐ‬ Taken from.whi l et he ya r e unaware?. Surat Yusuf. such that they might affirm that He is the Creator and the Sustainer. Juza’ [13]. plain proof. the religion of.com .s a v eapa r t ne r t ha tbe l ong st oY ou. me a ni ngi t[ whe nt he ys a i di t ] . tafsir.nopa r t ne rha v eY ou.S oGl or ybet oGod! .ort hec omi ngoft heHourupont hem s udde nl y . ar-Ra’ d & Ibraheem {                         ‫ﭐ‬                            } 20 And most of them do not believe in God. God. {                                   ‫ﭐ‬                        ‫ﭐ‬                                          ۤ            } Do they deem themselves secure from the coming upon them of a pall. Y oupos s es shi ma nda l l t ha thepos s e s s e s ’ . by worshipping idols.[ i na f f i r ma t i on]ofHi sbe i nge x a l t e dhi g ha bov eha v i ng pa r t ne r s . I and whoever follows me. without ascribing partners.ofGod’ sc ha s t i s e me nt . which is why. of the time of its arrival beforehand? {          ‫ﭐ‬                         ‫ﭐ‬                    ‫ﭐ‬                        ٰ          ‫ﭐ‬   ٰ              ۤ            ٰ         } S a y .t hes ubj e c t .t ot he m:‘ T hi si smywa y— which He explains by saying: I call to.pr edi c a t e dbywha tpr e c e de d[ s c .‘ be i ngupon s ur ek nowl e dg e ’ ] ) .a ndIa m notoft hei dol a t e r s ’— this [sentence] is also subsumed by the [explanation of] hi ss t a t e me nta bout‘ hi swa y ’ . they used to sa y :‘ AtY ours e r v i c e. when crying their [ritual] response to God. a calamity enveloping t he m.

that is. the idolatrous. 12: 109] ) . the people of Mecca.orr e a dk udhi bū.c a nnotbea v er t e d from the sinning.Tafsir al-Jalalayn.‘ t owhom Wer ev e a l e d’ )— and not angels — from among the people of the towns. [to whom] Our support waned until.AndOurwr a t h. that is. Surat Yusuf. not travelled in the land and seen the nature of the consequence for those who were before them?. AndWedi dnots endbe f or ey ou[ a nyme s s e ng e r s ]s a v eme n[ a bov e . ‘ [ whome v erWewi s he d]wa sde l i v e r e d’ ) .t ha tt he ywe r ede ni e d( r e a dk udhdhi bū. as past tense.Ope opl eofMe c c a . that is. {                                                                                 ‫ﭐ‬            ٰ         ٰ                                 ‫ﭐ‬                                        } Taken from.t hi s . [when] t heme s s e ng e r swe r ec er t a i n. since they are more knowledgeable and wiser than the people of the desert.com . is better for those who are wary. who are crude and ignorant. folk. how they ended up. the principal towns. tafsir. Will they not understand? (read a-fa-l āy a ‘ qi l ūn. Q. ar-Ra’ d & Ibraheem 21 AndWedi dnots e ndbe f or ey ou[ a nyme s s e ng e r s ]s a v eme ni ns pi r e dbyr e v e l a t i on( y ūhāi l a y hi m:a v a r i a ntr e a di ngha snūhīi l a y hi m. of God.‘ Wi l ly ounotunde r s t a nd? ’ ) . Paradise. when the messengers despaired and thought. Our help came to them and whomever We willed We delivered (read fa-nuna j j īorf a -nunj ī . Have they.ora -fa-l āt a ‘ qi l ūn.a nd so have faith? {           ‫ﭐ‬          ‫ﭐ‬                                                                                      ۤ             ‫ﭐ‬         ‫ﭐ‬          ٰ     } Unt i l( ha t t āi ndi c a t e st hee nd[ r e s ul t ]i ndi c a t e dby[ t hepr e v i ouss t a t e me nt ]wa -māa r s a l nāmi n qa bl i k ai l l ār i j ā l a n. when they were destroyed for denying their messengers? And verily the abode of the Hereafter.orf a -nujjiya. t ome a nt ha tt hec ommuni t i e st houg htt ha tt he i rme s s eng e r sha d been lied to concerning the victory which they had been promised).Ourc ha s t i s e me nt . Juza’ [13].t ome a n[ t ha tt heywer e denied] to such an extent that [they believed that] there would not be any [possible acceptance of] faith ther e a f t e r .

a ni nv e nt e d.Tafsir al-Jalalayn. that one needs for [the proper observance of] religion. and a mercy for a folk who believe: such [folk] are singled out for mention because they are the ones to benefit from it. ar-Ra’ d & Ibraheem 22 Ve r i l yt he r ei si nt he i rs t or i e s . to the exclusion of others.di s c our s ebut .t hi sQur ’ ā n. Juza’ [13]. of everything. an elucidation.t ha ti s . It .a confirmation of what was [revealed] before it.al e s s onf orpeopl eofpi t h. Surat Yusuf. of scriptures.t heme s s e ng e r s ’[ s t or i e s ] . and a detailing. and a guidance. from error. tafsir. Taken from.com .i ti s .i snotaf a br i c a t e d. possessors of intellect.

that is.a r et he v e r s e soft heBook . the sun and the moon.a ndt hi s[ s t a t ement] is true. Surat Yusuf.                         ‫ﭐ‬             ‫ﭐ‬                                         ‫ﭐ‬         ‫ﭐ‬              ‫ﭐ‬        ٰ     ‫ﭐ‬                                   ٰ    ٰ  ‫ﭐ‬             ‫ﭐ‬       ‫ﭐ‬  } {                  Godi sHeWhor a i s e dupt hehe a v e nswi t houtv i s i bl es uppor t s( ‘ a ma di st hepl ur a lof‘ i mā d. and disposed. made subservient. the indications of His power. each one. moving. so that you.‘ ac ol umn’ .na me l y .t he s ev er s e s . wherein is no doubt. that is. since there are no actual supports) then presided upon the Throne. He directs the command. the people of Mecca.T hos e . the predicate of which is [the following]).com .t heQur ’ ā n( t heg e ni t i v ea nne x a t i onc a r r i e st heme a ni ngof[ partitive] min. through resurrection. that it is from God.a ndt ha twhi c hha sbe e nr e v e a l e dt oy ou f r om y ourL or d. but most people. exalted be He.t heQur ’ ā n( t hi s [preceding sentence] constitutes the subject. He conducts the affairs of His Kingdom. along its course. He expounds. might be certain of the encounter with your Lord. ar-Ra’ d & Ibraheem Surat ar-Ra’ d {                    ‫ﭐ‬           ٰ             ‫ﭐ‬                           ۤ     ‫ﭐ‬           ‫ﭐ‬               ۤ  ۤ   } 23 Al i fl ā m mī mr ā ’ :Godk nowsbe s twha tHeme a nsbyt he s e[ l e t t e r s ] . [until] the Day of Resurrection.whi c h i s[ t hes a mea s ]a nus t uwā na .Tafsir al-Jalalayn. is the Truth. He details. of them. O people of Mecca. until [the conclusion of] an appointed time. the signs. tafsir. {                               ٰ                 ‫ﭐ‬       ‫ﭐ‬                ‫ﭐ‬                                  ‫ﭐ‬                                                  ‫ﭐ‬            ‫ﭐ‬         } Taken from. ‘ f r om’ ) . a presiding befitting Him. Juza’ [13]. do not believe.

com .orr e a dz a r ‘ i n. uponGod’ sha ndi wor k . Surely in that. diverse terrains.wa t e r ed( r e a dt us qāa s[ r e f e r r i ng t o]j a nnā t .[ a sas uppl e me nt ]t oa ‘ nā bi n. created.i nt heg e ni t i v e . of every species. exalted be He. tafsir. are signs for a people who understand. Juza’ [13]. [who] reflect. some good. indications ofHi sOne ne s s . or read wa-y uf a ddi l .a ndwha ti si nt he m.[ e a c h]ofi ndi v i dua lr oot . some of little yield and some fruitful — and these constitute proofs of His power. exalted be He — a ndg a r de ns . Surat Yusuf. and its darkness. joined side by side. are signs.                            ‫ﭐ‬             ٰ                       ۤ         ‫ﭐ‬                                            ٰ                                                                                       } { Taken from.‘ g a r de ns ’ .s i mi l a r l y[ c ons t i t ut i ngpr oof sofHi spowe ra r e ]Hi swor ds :a ndda t e -palms sharing one r oot( s i nwā ni st hepl ur a l ofs i nw. whi c ha r eda t e -palms belonging to the same root. or c ha r ds . a s as uppl e me ntt oj a nnā t un.‘ g a r de ns ’ . and of every fruit He has made in it two kinds. bitter — and these are [also] proofs of His power. ar-Ra’ d & Ibraheem 24 And He it is Who spread out.orr e a dy us qāa s[ r e f e r r i ngt o]t heme nt i one d[ da t e palms]) by the same [source of] water. which is mentioned. extended [flat]. the night. and We make some of them to excel (wa-nufaddil. therein firm mountains and rivers. with the day. ‘ ofv i ne s ’ ) . others. ofv i ne sa nds ownf i e l ds( r e a dz a r ‘ un. He cloaks. neighbouring each other. f orape opl ewhor e f l e c t . He covers. the earth and set. e x a l t e dbeHe . i nt henomi na t i v e . some briny. Surely in that. but with many offshoots) and date-pa l msot he r wi s e .Tafsir al-Jalalayn. which is mentioned.                    ٰ              ‫ﭐ‬            ٰ                                         ٰ                                                                                            ‫ﭐ‬       } {            And on the earth are tracts.‘ a ndHe[ God]ma k e s[ s omeoft he m]t oex c e l ’ )ot her si nf l a v our( r e a df ī ’ l -uk ulorf ī ’ l ukl): and so some are sweet.

i nde ni a lofr e s ur r e c t i on:‘ Whe nweha v ebe c omedust. Juza’ [13]. [rather than] mercy. tafsir.‘ a c a c i a ’ ) . they shall be the inhabitants of the Fire.com . [ i ti swondr ous ]be c a us et heOneWhoha st he power to originate creation and [to originate] what has been mentioned [above]. Surat Yusuf.a r epr onounc e d. for otherwise He would not have left a single creature on the face of it [the earth].s a mur ā t ] . without any precedent.i st he i rs a y i ng . and the second one [a-i nnā ]a st hepr e di c a t e . ar-Ra’ d & Ibraheem 25 And if you wonder. against those who disobey Him.whi l ea not herv a r i a ntr e a di ngha st he [exact] opposite).s i mi l a r[ i n pa t t e r n]t os a mur a[ pl . abiding therein. at the disbelievers denying you. and truly your Lord is severe in retribution. the chastisement. in both instances [a-i dhā and a-i nnā ] . one variant reading has the first [a-i dhā ]a st he interrogative.or[ onema y ]pr onounc et hef i r s ta ndnotpr onounc et hes ec ond. [ s ur e l y ]de s er v i ngwonder . O Muhammad (s). {         ‫ﭐ‬                                 ٰ                                                  ‫ﭐ‬                                     ‫ﭐ‬                 ‫ﭐ‬                   } The following was revealed regarding their hastening on. of the chastisement: And they would have you hasten on the evil. those — fetters shall be around their necks. out of mockery. s ha l l wei nde e dt he nbe[ r a i s e d]i nane wc r e a t i on? ’ .but in both cases inserting an alif or not [inserting it]. has [also] the power to restore them [to life] (both hamzas.Tafsir al-Jalalayn.t he punishments of disbelievers like them: will they not take warning from these? Truly your Lord is forgiving to mankind despite their evil-doing. then surely wondrous. Those are the ones who disbelieve in their Lord.t ha ti st os a y . {                                                                           ۤ                    ‫ﭐ‬           } Taken from. and those. when there have indeed occurred before them exemplary punishments (ma t hul ā ti st he pl ur a lofma t hul a . rather than the good.

‘ Whyha snots ome s i g n bee ns entdown upon hi m. [those who] are manifest [to view] when they make their way. the Tremendous. God.upon Muha mma d( s ) . and those who go forth. and those who lurk. to guide them to their Lord with the signs that He gives him. in its darkness. and what they increase. and not what with they request. {                                                      ۤ                                                              ٰ                                              ‫ﭐ‬                                                                              } Taken from.com . a [precise] amount and limit which it does not exceed. And everything with Him is according to a [precise] measure. and for every folk there is a guide. of male or female.Tafsir al-Jalalayn. [of] what is hidden and what is witnessed. {                                                     ‫ﭐ‬                ٰ                                   ‫ﭐ‬  } God knows what every female bears. in the night. by day. ar-Ra’ d & Ibraheem 26 And t hos e who di s be l i e v es a y . tafsir. [who] hide themselves. exalted be He. ‘ t heHi g hE x a l t e d’ ) . the High Exalted. of it. f r om hi sL or d! ’ . t hel i k eoft hes t a f fa ndt he[ g l owi ng ]ha nd. Juza’ [13]. exalted be He. says: You are only a warner. ort hes he -camel. {            ‫ﭐ‬        ‫ﭐ‬           ‫ﭐ‬           ‫ﭐ‬         } [He is] the Knower of the unseen and the visible. those of you who speak secretly and those who do so openly. of the time of gestation. above His creation. {        ‫ﭐ‬               ‫ﭐ‬                                                 ‫ﭐ‬                          } [They are all] the same. according to His knowledge. through His [overpowering] subjugation (read al-mut a ‘ ā l ī or al-mut a ‘ ā l . one or more. and what the wombs reduce. for it is not your duty to bring forth signs. and otherwise. a prophet. the Great. Surat Yusuf. one to threaten the disbelievers.

for a people there is none that can repel it. dispute. guarding him t hr oug hGod’ sc omma nd. and so too the angels. t ha ti s . t ha ti s . such that it burns [that person]: this was revealed regarding a man to whom the Prophet (s) had sent someone to invite [to Islam] andwhos a i d. Juza’ [13]. though He is great in might. pr oc l a i msHi spr a i s e . ‘ Gl or ybet oGodt hr oug hHi spr a i s e ’ ( s ubhā na ’ L l ā h wa-bi-hamdihi). of thunderbolts. He unleashes the thunderbolts — these are a fire which issues forth from the clouds — and smites with them whom He will. And if God wills misfortune. Taken from. the clouds that are heavy. to his front and to his rear. through an act of disobedience. yet they.orofc opper ? ’ .wher e upona thunderbolt came down on him and blew off the top of his head. proclaim His praise. I nde e d God does not alter the state of a people — He does not deprive them of His grace — unless they have altered the state of their souls. angels who follow him. with rain. either from among the attendant angels or others. [inspiring] fear. He creates. {         ‫ﭐ‬                     ‫ﭐ‬                                                         ‫ﭐ‬                                    ‫ﭐ‬                    ‫ﭐ‬            } And the thunder — this is an angel. the disbelievers. hes a y s . tafsir. ar-Ra’ d & Ibraheem 27 For him. and He produces.com . that is. {         ‫ﭐ‬       ‫ﭐ‬                                     ‫ﭐ‬              ‫ﭐ‬       } He it is Who shows you the lightning. ot he rt ha nGod. Surat Yusuf. driving them. in awe of Him. chastisement. argue with the Prophet (s). in travellers. a pa r tf r omHi m.Tafsir al-Jalalayn. for man. are attendants. who is in charge of the clouds. for whom God wills misfortune. from [their] comely nature. t ha ti s . have no protector ( mi nwā l i n: mi ni se x t r a )t oa v er ti tf r omt hem. of rain.orofs i l v e r .‘ Whoi st heMe s s e ng e r ofGod?Andwha ti sGod?I sHe[ ma de ]ofg ol d. of God. in power. f r om [ t heda ng erof ]t hej i nna ndot her s . [while he] c ons t a nt l y . and they. about God. that is. byHi sc omma nd. or in [the severity of His] retribution. for those who are at home. and hope.

in the mornings and the evenings. and the call of the disbelievers. but it would never reach it. tafsir. such as believers. [reach] his mouth. protectors.           ‫ﭐ‬                           ‫ﭐ‬     ٰ    ‫ﭐ‬                                                                                              ‫ﭐ‬               ‫ﭐ‬          ‫ﭐ‬      ٰ    ٰ  ‫ﭐ‬              } {         ‫ﭐ‬           ‫ﭐ‬                               ‫ﭐ‬                        ‫ﭐ‬                                                                 ‫ﭐ‬   S a y . ar-Ra’ d & Ibraheem {                       ‫ﭐ‬                                                               ‫ﭐ‬                                                                                  ‫ﭐ‬         ‫ﭐ‬                } 28 His. ot he rt ha nHi m — namely. to worship.com .S a y . t ha ti s . calling to it. that is. is the call of truth. a pa r tf r om Hi m. at the edge of a well. save as. the words that constitute it [the truth]. idols. that is. prostrate.OMuha mma d( s ) .a ndt hos euponwhom t he yc a l l ( r e a dy a d‘ ūnort a d‘ ūn. the idols — do not answer them anything. of which they ask. [it is only] in perdition. and these are: ‘ t he r ei snog odbutGod’( l āi l ā hai l l ā ’ L l ā h) .t he r ec a nbenoot he rr e s pons e .t ot he m:‘ T he nha v ey ou taken beside Him.t oy ourpe opl e :‘ Whoi st heL or doft hehe a v e nsa ndt hee a r t h? ’S a y :‘ God’ —a nde v e ni ft he ydonots a yi t . a ndy oua ba ndont heOneWhoi s their Possessor? (an interrogative meant as a Taken from. ever: likewise they [the idols] will not answer them. other than Him. or unwillingly.Tafsir al-Jalalayn. and their shadows also. is the response to. Surat Yusuf. their worship of idols — or their actual supplication — goes only astray. ‘ y ouc a l l ’ ) . {    ‫ﭐ‬             ‫ﭐ‬                               ‫ﭐ‬      ٰ    ٰ  ‫ﭐ‬                        } And to God prostrate whoever is in the heavens and the earth. such as hypocrites and those coerced by the sword. that it may reach his mouth. Juza’ [13]. willingly. who have no power to benefit or ha r mt he ms e l v e s ? ’ . [ t hos ewhom]t he ywor s hi p. one who stretches forth his hands towards water. by its rising through the well to [reach] him. exalted be He.

that is. remains. Juza’ [13]. that is.[ r e s pe c t i v e l y ] . Thus. tafsir. ornaments.‘ t heys me l t ’ )i nt hef i r e. adornment. saying: He. or ware.S a y :‘ God is the Creator of all things. such as utensils. in the way of water and minerals. while that which is of use to mankind. [He points out] the similitude thereof.i not he rwor ds . ‘ y ous me l t ’ . equal? Or are darkness. of the flood and of the minerals smelted. when they [the minerals] are melted. t heS ubj ug a t or ’ . nots o!Nones a v et heCr ea t ori swor t hyofbe i ngwor s hi ppe d. from the sky. which is useful. and He is the One.Tafsir al-Jalalayn. it passes away as dross. rain. sends down water. and this [latter scum] consists of the impurities expelled by the bellows. and the light. disbelief. ory ūqi dūn. faith.t ot he m? ’ . ar-Ra’ d & Ibraheem 29 r e buk e ) . in the Taken from.S a y :‘ Ar et hebl i ndonea ndt hes e er .           ‫ﭐ‬         ‫ﭐ‬       ‫ﭐ‬            ٰ                                                 ‫ﭐ‬       ‫ﭐ‬                                                      ‫ﭐ‬          ‫ﭐ‬                                              ‫ﭐ‬               } {        ‫ﭐ‬        ‫ﭐ‬            ٰ      ‫ﭐ‬                   ‫ﭐ‬                                              ‫ﭐ‬         He then strikes a similitude of truth and falsehood. and the flood carries a scum that swells.oft hee a r t h’ smi ne r a l s .s i l v e rorc opper . [there rises] a scum the like of it.de s i r i ng . whereat the valleys flow according to their measure. lingers. ofHi ss e r v a nt s . the like of the scum of the flood.s ot ha tt he ybe l i e v et he m wor t hy of being worshipped on account of what these [associates] have created? (an interrogative of di s a v owa l ) . according to their full capacity.com . seeking [to make].t hedi s be l i e v e ra ndt hebe l i e v e r . useless refuse.s uc ha sg ol d. having no associate therein. equal? No! Or have they set up for God associates who have created the like of His creation. and so He cannot have an associate in terms of worship. God points out truth and falsehood. that is. Surat Yusuf. so that creation seems alike. rising above it. and this [scum] is the filth and the like that lies on t hes ur f a c eoft hee a r t h. exalted be He. As for the scum. in the way mentioned. [is] what t hea s s oc i a t e sc r ea t ea ndt hec r e a t i onofGod[ a l i k e ] . a ndf r om t ha twhi c ht he ys me l t( r e a dt ūqi dūn.

and therewith the like of it. Paradise. in the way mentioned.com . For such there shall be an awful reckoning. an evil resting place. and that is that they will be requited for every single thing they did.Tafsir al-Jalalayn. falsehood wanes and is [eventually] effaced. remember. by way of obedience. and those who do not respond to Him. Surat Yusuf. ar-Ra’ d & Ibraheem 30 earth. heed [such admonitions]. God strikes. even if it should prevail over the truth at certain times. and their abode shall be Hell. Thus. {           ‫ﭐ‬                     ‫ﭐ‬                           ‫ﭐ‬  } Taken from. Juza’ [13]. Truth.                                     ‫ﭐ‬     ۤ             ٰ                                                       ‫ﭐ‬                                                      ‫ﭐ‬     ٰ      ‫ﭐ‬                    ‫ﭐ‬             } {          ‫ﭐ‬ For those who respond to their Lord. [those who] answer Him. there shall be the goodly reward. tafsir. namely the disbelievers — if they possessed all that is in the earth. none of which will be forgiven. is established and enduring. they would offer it to redeem themselves therewith. it is! {       ‫ﭐ‬                              ٰ                        ‫ﭐ‬                                                  } T hef ol l owi ngwa sr e v e a l e dr e g a r di ngHa mz aa ndAbūJ a hl :I shewhok nowst ha twha ti sr e v e a l e d to you from your Lord is the truth. He makes clear. similitudes. possessors of intellect. and does not know it. for a time: likewise. on the other hand. and so believes in it. nor believes in it? No! But only people of pith. against the chastisement. like him who is blind?.

and dread an awful reckoning — a similar [statement] has preceded. they shall share with them their stations [of Paradise] as an honouring for them. and repel evil with good. and maintain the prayer and expend. or [religious] obligations. and harm through patience. theirs shall be the sequel of the [heavenly] Abode: that is. which they shall enter. as a [place of] residence. by abandoning belief. His Threat [of punishment].com . the praiseworthy sequel in the Hereafter. ar-Ra’ d & Ibraheem 31 such as fulfil God’ sc ov e na nt . from among their fathers and their spouses and their descendants. they. of faith and kinship ties and so forth. even if these [latter] did not perform deeds of the same [merit] as theirs. such as [repelling] ignorance through forbearance. [those who] believed.s e ek i ng . and [staying] away from di s obe di e nc e. that is.f r om a mongt he transient things of this world. and the angels shall enter to Taken from. Surat Yusuf. secretly and openly. {                                                              ‫ﭐ‬                            ‫ﭐ‬    } and such as cement what God has commanded should be cemented.[ me a ni ng ]t heonet ha twa st a k e nf r om t he m whi l et he ywe r es t i l l atoms — or [meaning] any covenant — and do not break the pact.Tafsir al-Jalalayn.de s i r i ng .t he i rL or d’ sc ount ena nc e . those. namely: {                                                                                                                                     } Gardens of Eden. and fear their Lord. {      ‫ﭐ‬   ٰ                 ٰ                ‫ﭐ‬          ‫ﭐ‬                                                                    ‫ﭐ‬                                      ‫ﭐ‬                     } such as are patient. in obedience. of that which We have provided them. Juza’ [13]. through obedience and [during] hardship. along with those who were righteous.a nd not hi nge l s e . tafsir.

t hea wf ul sequel in the abode of the Hereafter.dur i ngl i f eon earth. {      ‫ﭐ‬   ٰ                                          } 32 They wi l ls a y[ t ot he m] :‘ Pe a c ebeupony ou. He makes it abundant.f ory ourpa t i e nc e ’ . and they. is but [a brief] enjoyment. restricts it. in the life of this world. your sequel. Juza’ [13]. comparison with the life of. through unbelief and acts of disobedience. in.ba ni s hme ntf r om God’ sme r c y . yet the life of this world. a nds e v erwha tGodha sc omma nde ds houl d be cemented. upon Muhammad (s). theirs s ha l lbet hec ur s e . How excellent is.a ndt he i r ss ha l lbet hea wf ula bode . been sent down upon him. a wanton rejoicing. rejoice. in order to congratulate them. for whomever He will. when they first enter. for whom He will. namely.t hi si st her e wa r d. a trifling thing. the Hereafter. Surat Yusuf. of the gates of Paradise or of [the gates of] the palaces [of Paradise]. {                  ‫ﭐ‬             ‫ﭐ‬          ‫ﭐ‬                ‫ﭐ‬          ‫ﭐ‬                                          ‫ﭐ‬              ‫ﭐ‬  } God expands provision. enjoyed and then lost. Taken from.com . that is.l i k et he staff and the [glowing] hand or the she-camel.‘ Whyha snots omes i g n. tafsir. the people of Mecca. and straitens. the sequel of the [heavenly] Abode! {      ‫ﭐ‬     ۤ                    ‫ﭐ‬            ٰ           ‫ﭐ‬                                       ‫ﭐ‬                                                    ‫ﭐ‬                          ‫ﭐ‬    } Andt hos ewhobr e a kGod’ sc ov e na nta f t e rpl e dg i ngi t . ar-Ra’ d & Ibraheem them from every gate. {                       ۤ                               ‫ﭐ‬                                                                 ‫ﭐ‬           } Andt hos ewhodi s be l i e v e .f r om a mongt hepe opl eofMe c c a . Hell.Tafsir al-Jalalayn. and work corruption in the earth.s a y . in what they acquire therein.

those whot ur ni nr e pent a nc e ’ . f or . t her ei snog ods a v eHi m. Juza’ [13]. f i ndr e s t . to Him.‘ t hos ewho’ .t ot he m.‘ g oodne s s ’ .whos es ha deamount e dt r a v e l l e r travelling for 100 years would still not traverse) and a fair resort. y e tt he ydi s be l i e v ei nt heCompa s s i ona t eOne. He directs. Taken from.Ve r i l ybyGod’ sr e me mbr a nc ea r ehe a r t sr e a s s ur e d.t hepr e di c a t eofwhi c h[ i st hef ol l owi ng ] )t he i r ss ha l l bebl e s s e dne s s( t ūbāi sav e r ba l noun de r i v e df r om t ī b. {                     ٰ              ‫ﭐ‬                              ‫ﭐ‬  } those who believe and perform righteousde e ds :( a l l a dhī naā ma nū wa -‘ a mi l ū’ l -s ā l i hā ti st he s ubj e c t .[ t hos ewho]r e t ur nt oHi m( ma n. I nHi mI t r us ta ndt oHi mi smyr ec our s e ’ . to His religion.or[ t hena meof ]at r e ei nPa r a di s e .                                                  ٰ       ۤ                  ٰ       ‫ﭐ‬                                        ۤ     ‫ﭐ‬                                                                ۤ                      } { Thus.t hehe a r t soft he believers. t heQur ’ ā n. to send astray — such that signs cannot avail him in any way — and He guides. We have sent you to a community before whom other communities have passed away. Surat Yusuf.Tafsir al-Jalalayn. t ha ti s . ar-Ra’ d & Ibraheem 33 f r om hi sL or d? ’S a y . t ha ti s . whe nt he ywer ec omma nde d t opr os t r a t et he ms e l v e st oHi m. tafsir.O Muhammad ( s ) : ‘ Hei smyL or d. byGod’ sr eme mbr a nc e .t ha ti s .t heys a i d. [a fair] place to return to. ‘ t hos ewho…’ ] ) . {         ‫ﭐ‬                  ‫ﭐ‬                  ‫ﭐ‬                                                 ‫ﭐ‬  } t hos ewhobe l i e v ea ndwhos ehe a r t sa r er e a s s ur e d. byHi s promise [ ofr e wa r d] .‘ Andwha ti st heCompa s s i ona t eOne ? ’S a y . a l l a dhī na . that you may recite to them that which We have revealed to you.com . just as We sent prophets before you.i ss ubs t i t ut e dby[ t he f ol l owi ng .t ot hem:‘ I ndeedGods e ndsa s t r a ywhomev e rHewi ll.

O Muhammad (s). tafsir. comes to pass. together with your army. such that they would respond. and make for us rivers and springs in it. without [the need for] any sign? And the disbelievers. even if they were given what they request [of signs]. such as being killed. because of their actions. torn. he alighted at Hudaybiyya until the conquest of Mecca took place. their disbelief. and none other. those who believe. or the dead were spoken to. from among the people of Mecca. and [suffering] war or drought. in other words [understand it as] annahu) had God willed.t he nma k et he s e mountains of Mecca drift away before us. that we may plant and sow seeds. taken captive.com . {                                                                                            ‫ﭐ‬            } Taken from.mov e df r om t he i r places. ofv i c t or ya g a i ns t them. truly God does not break His promise: and indeed. or you alight. hoping that they [the ones requesting them] might believe: Have they not realised. Nay. or the earth were cleft. they still would not believe. near their home — Mecca — unt i l God’ spr omi s e . continue to be struck by devastation. that is. and resurrect for us our dead fathers to speak to us and tell us that you are a pr ophe t ’ :E v e ni fi twe r eaQur ’ ā nwhe r e byt hemount a i nswe r es e ti nmot i on. a catastrophe that devastates them through all manner of hardship. that (an is softened.Tafsir al-Jalalayn. to faith. and no other. Surat Yusuf. because of what they wrought. Juza’ [13]. He could have guided all mankind?. but the affair belongs entirely to God.‘ I fy oua r e[ t r ul y ]apr ophe t . The following was revealed when the Companions were keen that what was requested [of signs] should be manifested. so that none believes except he whom He wills that he believes. ar-Ra’ d & Ibraheem         ‫ﭐ‬                           ‫ﭐ‬               ‫ﭐ‬                     ۤ              ‫ﭐ‬                              ‫ﭐ‬              ٰ        ‫ﭐ‬                    ‫ﭐ‬                            ‫ﭐ‬                                 } 34 {           ‫ﭐ‬                ‫ﭐ‬            ‫ﭐ‬                  ٰ                                                                             T hef ol l owi ngwa sr e v e a l e dwhe nt he ys a i dt ohi m.

and verily the chastisement of the Hereafter is more grievous. it [My retribution] will come to pass. through being killed or taken captive. from His chastisement.t ha ti s . in the same way that you have been mocked — this is meant as solace for the Prophet (s) — but I gave respite to those who disbelieved. that is to say. protector. {                ‫ﭐ‬                             ‫ﭐ‬                     ‫ﭐ‬          ‫ﭐ‬                  } For them there is chastisement in the life of this world. and they have no defender. me r e l y[ ama nnerof ]s pe a k i ng ? ’ . Taken from.S a y :‘ Na met he m! .Tafsir al-Jalalayn. is more severe.                                       ‫ﭐ‬                       ‫ﭐ‬                                                                                                     ٰ                          } {                            ‫ﭐ‬                       ‫ﭐ‬                       Is He Who stands.f orHim: who are they? Or will you inform Him.[ i ti sme r e l y ]ont heba s i soff a l s ec onj ec t ur e. He has no associate. ar-Ra’ d & Ibraheem 35 messengers were certainly mocked before you. of an associate. tafsir. over every soul what it has earned?. which He does not know in the earth? (an interrogative of disavowal). for if He did. then I seized them. watches. what it has done of good or evil — and this is God — like the idols who are not so? No! This [response] is suggested by [the following wor ds ] :Y e tt heya s c r i bet oGoda s s oc i a t e s . Or is it — nay — you call them associates. for him there is no guide. with retribution. [from] the path of guidance. and I shall deal with those who have mocked you in the same way. that is. He would know him — exalted be He above such a thing. Nay.com . from God.wi t houta ny truth in it. and whomever God sends astray. Juza’ [13]. that is. Surat Yusuf. their unbelief. and how was My retribution?. has been adorned for those who disbelieve and they have been barred from the way. but their scheming. of something. in other words. will you inform God.

in that to which they summon you of their creed. T oHi mI c a l l a ndt oHi ms ha l l bemyr e t ur n’ . Juza’ [13]. S a y :‘ I ha v ebe e nc omma nde d— in that which has been revealed to me — only to wor s hi pGod. and the requital of the disbelievers is the Fire! {                                               ۤ        ‫ﭐ‬                                                           ‫ﭐ‬                                                 ‫ﭐ‬                     ‫ﭐ‬    } Andt hos et owhom Weha v eg i v e nt heS c r i pt ur e . which has been promised to the God-fearing (this is a subject. hypothetically [speaking].S a l ā ma ndot he r sf r om among the believing Jews. the predicate of which has been omitted). are those who reject some of it.ofGod’ s Taken from. the description. never perishing. of idolatry. is the reward. t heQur ’ ā n. And if you should follow their whims. after what has come to you of knowledg e. [those of] the disbelievers. namely. for you to judge thereby between people. Weha v er e v e a l e di t . rejoice in that which has been revealed to you. and among the factions. because of its according with what they have with them [of revelation]. j us tl i k et ha t[ ma nne rof ]r e v e l a t i on. in other words.s uc ha s‘ AbdAl l ā hb. a sa[ de c i s i v e ] judgement in Arabic. because it does not exist therein. Paradise. that is.Tafsir al-Jalalayn. the sequel. {                          ‫ﭐ‬                      ‫ﭐ‬                                             ‫ﭐ‬                                            ٰ     } Ands o. what is consumed in it. that aligned themselves against you in enmity. is everlasting. s uc ha st heme nt i onoft he‘ Compa s s i ona t eOne ’( a l -Ra hmā n)a nda l lt ha ti sot he rt ha nt hes t or i e s [related there i n] . from among the idolaters and the Jews. a ndnott oa s s oc i a t e[ a ny t hi ng ]wi t hHi m. never replaced by any sun. t ha ti s . That. its food. and its shade. is everlasting.com . ar-Ra’ d & Ibraheem {      ‫ﭐ‬            ‫ﭐ‬                  ‫ﭐ‬         ‫ﭐ‬   ٰ                                             ‫ﭐ‬                                 ‫ﭐ‬             ‫ﭐ‬         ‫ﭐ‬         } 36 The likeness. of those who were wary. tafsir. of Paradise. Surat Yusuf. according to what We recount to you [is as follows]: beneath it rivers flow. in the language of the Arabs.

tafsir. 37 {                         ‫ﭐ‬                                                                                                                               } And when they derided him for having many wives. whatever He will and He fixes (read yuthbit or yuthabbit). in other words [understand it as being]. therein whatever He will of rulings or other matters. period. from among them. fa-dhā k[ ‘ t he ns os ha l l i tbe ’ ] ) .y ous ha l lha v enopr ot ec t or . Surat Yusuf.com . bec a us et he ya r es e r v a nt se nt hr a l l e d[ byHim]. its [source of] origin. of which nothing is ever changed. during your lifetime (the response of the conditional statement has been omitted. children — and you are like them. there is a Book.ha sbe e n assimiliated wi t ht he e x t r a mā )We s how y ou a pa r toft ha twhi c h We pr omi s et he m. of it [the Book]. save by God’ sl e a v e . that he should bring a sign. and which consists of what He inscribed in pre-eternity (azal). before chastising them. and with Him is the Mother of the Book.‘ whe t he r ’ . For every term. your duty is only to deliver [the Taken from. and it was not for any Messenger. the following was revealed: And indeed We sent messengers before you.orWet a k eyou [to Us]. it is for you only to convey [the Message]. {       ‫ﭐ‬                     ‫ﭐ‬                                                      ‫ﭐ‬                           } And whe t he r( [ r ea da s ]i mmā :t he nūn oft he c ondi t i ona lpa r t i c l ei n.a g a i ns tGod( mi na ’ L l ā himi n:t he[ s e c ond]mi n is extra) and no defender. and We assigned to them wives and seed.t oa s s i s ty ou. to ward off His chastisement. ar-Ra’ d & Ibraheem One ne s s . wherein is inscribed its delimitation. {        ‫ﭐ‬                                           ‫ﭐ‬           } God effaces.of chastisement.Tafsir al-Jalalayn. Juza’ [13].

Surat Yusuf. there is none that can repel His judgement and He is swift at reckoning. exalted be He. since He brings it to them whence they are not aware. and he who pos s e s s e sk nowl edg eoft heBook ’ . and this is the ultimate plotting.av a r i a ntr e a di ngha sk uf f ā r[ ‘ t hedi s be l i e v e r s ’ ] )s ha l la s s ur e dl yk nowf or whom shall be the sequel of the [heavenly] Abode. Juza’ [13]. against their prophets just as they plot against you.com . tafsir. And nor is their plotting like the plotting of God. the praiseworthy sequel in the abode of the Hereafter: will it be theirs or that of the Prophet (s) and his Companions? {        ‫ﭐ‬                                                      ‫ﭐ‬    ٰ                                   ‫ﭐ‬           } And those who disbelieve sa y . when they finally come to Us. among His creatures as He will. And God judges. diminishing it at its outlying regions?. and so its requital is prepared for it. and it is for Us to do the reckoning. Taken from. He knows what every soul earns. to my truthfulness [as a messenger]. f r oma mongt heChr i s t i a na ndJ e wi s hbe l i e v e r s .t ot hem:‘ God suffices as a witness between me and you. by giving victory to the Prophet (s). The disbeliever ( t heg e nusi sme a nthe r e . for. plotted.t oy ou:‘ Y ouha v enotbe e ns e nt[ byGod] ! ’S a y . [how] We target their land. the people of Mecca. whereupon We shall requite them.Tafsir al-Jalalayn. that is. {      ‫ﭐ‬                       ‫ﭐ‬                                                        ‫ﭐ‬                                ‫ﭐ‬              } And indeed those that were before them. but to God belongs all plotting. have not seen how We visit the land. of communities. ar-Ra’ d & Ibraheem Message]. 38 {       ‫ﭐ‬                                             ‫ﭐ‬                                  ‫ﭐ‬                               } Or is it that they.

Taken from. ma ybes ubs t i t ut e dby[ t hef ol l owi ngi l ās i r ā t ] ) . {                     ٰ                                   ‫ﭐ‬                            ‫ﭐ‬               ‫ﭐ‬          ‫ﭐ‬                     ‫ﭐ‬  } t hos ewho( a l l a dhī nai sade s c r i pt i on)pr e f er . that you may bring forth mankind from darkness.t heVi c t or . [from] unbe l i e f .T hi sQur ’ ā nis. And woe to the disbelievers from a terrible chastisement. creatures and servants.wi t hwha tf ol l ows be i nga na dj e c t i v a l qua l i f i c a t i on.byt hel e a v e .‘ i nt ol i g ht ’ .r e a di nt heg e ni t i v ea sas ubs t i t ut i onora ne x pl i c a t i v es uppl e me nt .oft he i rL or d( i l ā ’ l -nūr . as possessions. a Book We have revealed to you.Tafsir al-Jalalayn. {                                             ‫ﭐ‬             ٰ    ٰ  ‫ﭐ‬                   ‫ﭐ‬       ‫ﭐ‬  } God( Al l ā hi .oft heMi g ht y .[ i nt o]f a i t h. the path. Juza’ [13]. from the truth. O Muhammad (s).t hel i f eoft hi swor l dov e rt heHer e a f t e r . Surat Yusuf.f r om God’ swa y .peopl e .

Juza’ [13].t heni ne[ s i g ns ] .S ur e l yi nt ha t . thankful. the Children of Israel. ar-Ra’ d & Ibraheem {       ‫ﭐ‬         ‫ﭐ‬                                             ‫ﭐ‬                                                                           } 40 And We have not sent any Messenger except with the tongue.a ndWes a i dt ohi m:‘ Br i ngf or t hy our people. of his people. tafsir. [into] faith. and were slaughtering your sons. your women — this was because some of the priests [of Egypt] had stated that a child born among the Israelites shall be the cause of Taken from.whe nMos e ss a i dt ohi spe opl e . the new-born. {                           ٰ               ‫ﭐ‬                           ‫ﭐ‬                ‫ﭐ‬                                         ٰ                        } Andv e r i l yWes e ntMos e swi t hOurs i g ns .‘ Remembe rGod’ sgrace to you when He delivered you from the folk of Pharaoh. that he might make [the Message] clear to them. in His actions. in His kingdom.a r es i g nsf ore v e r yma nendur i ng . Surat Yusuf. who were inflicting upon you a dreadful chastisement. with the language.Tafsir al-Jalalayn.r e mi nder .                                                              ‫ﭐ‬     ۤ                                                             ‫ﭐ‬                  ‫ﭐ‬             ٰ                   } {                     ۤ       ٰ  And. and remind t he m oft heDa y sofGod’ . that he might make them understand what he brings to them. for [His] graces. God then sends astray whomever He will and He guides whomever He will.ofHi sg r a c e s . in obedience [to God]. keeping alive. and He is the Mighty. and sparing. [out of] unbelief.me nt i on. the Wise.

          ۤ                ٰ       ۤ                  ۤ       ٰ           ‫ﭐ‬                           ‫ﭐ‬                                         ‫ﭐ‬                                                       ‫ﭐ‬                       } {                                                                                Has there not come to you (an interrogative meant as an affirmative) the tidings. Pr a i s e d’ . pr a i s ewor t hyi nwha tHedoeswi t ht he m.a ndi nt ha t . y oua nda l l whoa r eone a r t h. grace — or [a tremendous] test — from your Lord.Tafsir al-Jalalayn. {                      ‫ﭐ‬                     ‫ﭐ‬                     ۤ             ۤ             } AndMos e ss a i d. a nd‘ Ād— t hepe opl eofHūd— a ndT ha mūd— t hepe opl eofS ā l i h— and those after them? None knows them save God. Surat Yusuf. t ohi spe opl e :‘ I fy oua r et ha nk l e s s .[ whe n]Hema dei tk nownt ha t :“ I fy oua r et ha nk f ul . [This is] on account of Taken from. of those who were before you — t hepe opl eofNoa h. de l i v e r a nc e— or [in that] chastisement — was a tremendous trial. 41 {                                                                                    } Andwhe ny ourL or dpr oc l a i me d. tafsir. [if] you deny [the truth of] the grace. through affirmation of [My] Oneness and obedience [to Me]. then assuredly I shall give you more. Juza’ [13]. then assuredly I shall chastise you — as is indicated by [His following words] — My chastiseme nti si nde e ds ev er e ”’ . [ wi t houtne e d]ofHi sc r e a t ur e s . l o!assuredly God i sI nde pe nde nt . ar-Ra’ d & Ibraheem t hede s t r uc t i onofPha r a oh’ sk i ng dom. the news. through disbelief and disobedience.f orMy graces.com . but if you are thankless.

of the heavens and the earth? He calls you. i n other words. So bring us a c l e a rwa r r a nt ’ .t oa na ppoi nt e dt e r m’ . to bite ont he m. with lucid arguments demonstrating their truthfulness.Tafsir al-Jalalayn. intended t os t a t et ha t[ f or g i v e ne s s ]whi c hi sduet o[ God’ s ]s e r v a nt s )a ndde f e ry ou. Taken from. Surat Yusuf. there can be no doubt concerning His Oneness. but they. desiring to bar us from that which our fathers used to worship. given the manifest proofs of it.T he ys a i d. Their messengers brought them clear signs.‘ Y oua r ebutmor t a l sl i k eus . [doubt] creating [great] uncertainty. thrust their hands into their mouths. ama ni f e s ta r g ume ntde mons t r a t i ngy ourt r ut hf ul ne s s . the Creator.outofex t r e mes pi t e . Juza’ [13]. the Originator. ‘ s omeof ’ ]i spa r t i t i v e . ar-Ra’ d & Ibraheem 42 their multitude.a ndl o!wea r ei ng r a v edoubtc onc e r ni ngt ha tt owhi c hy ouc a l lus ’ . that is.com .s i nc et hr oug hs ubmi s s i on[ t ot heOne God]a l l t ha tma yha v ebe e nc ommi t t e dpr e v i ous l yi sf or g i v e n( ore l s ei t[ mi n. a c c or di ngt owha ty ouc l a i m. so that He mi g htf or g i v ey ouy ours i ns( mi ndhunūbi k um:mi ni se x t r a .t het e r m ofde a t h.a nds a i d.‘ L o!wedi s bel i eve in that wherewith you have been sent. in the way of idols. ‘ Ca nt he r ebedoubtc onc er ni ngGod( a ni nt er r og a t i v eme a nta sadeni a l ) . the communities.                                    ۤ                       ۤ                                                          ‫ﭐ‬      ٰ    ٰ  ‫ﭐ‬                 ‫ﭐ‬                      } {                                                                                   T he i rme s s e ng er ss a i d. tafsir.wi t hout c ha s t i s e me nt . to obedience of Him.

enthralled. or you will surely return.butGodi sg r a c i ous to whomever He will of His servants. when He has guided us our ways? And we shall surely endure the hurt you do us. and in God let believers put their trust. in other words. for we are servants. should we not put our trust in God. {                                        ٰ                   ‫ﭐ‬                  } Taken from. {           ‫ﭐ‬                               ٰ                                                                                            ‫ﭐ‬          } Andt hos ewhodi s be l i e v e ds a i dt ot he i rme s s e ng e r s . you will [s ur e l y ]e ndup[ r e t ur ni ng ] .a sy ouha v es a i d. by way of [assigning] prophethood. tafsir.‘ Wea r ebutmor t a l sl i k ey ou.com . t hedi s be l i e v e r s . ar-Ra’ d & Ibraheem                     ‫ﭐ‬             ‫ﭐ‬                                                                                     ٰ                 ‫ﭐ‬    ٰ                                                         } {              ‫ﭐ‬ 43 T he i rme s s e ng e r ss a i dt ot he m.ourr e l i g i on. And it is not ours to bring you any warrant save by the leave of God. [let them] have confidence in Him.t oourc r e e d’ . Surat Yusuf. {               ‫ﭐ‬                     ‫ﭐ‬                            ٰ                                                ‫ﭐ‬                                 } And why.Tafsir al-Jalalayn. by His command. indeed. ‘ Wewi l l a s s ur e dl ye x pe l y ouf r om ourl a nd. Juza’ [13]. Andi nGodl e tt het r us t i ngputt he i rt r us t ’ . there is nothing to prevent us from [doing] this.T he nt he i r L or di ns pi r e dt hem[ s a y i ng ] : ‘ Wes ha l l s ur e l yde s t r oyt hee v i l doer s .

in front of him. victory [over them] and bequest of the land [to you] is. and he is given to drink. was brought to nothing. {                   ٰ                             } beyond him. rebellious.com . ofc ha s t i s eme nt . that is. obstinate to the truth. and fears My t hr e a t ’ . gulping it repeatedly. after they have been destroyed — that. is Hell.Tafsir al-Jalalayn. those causes of it that necessarily bring it about. and death. [scarcely] ingest because it is so foul and disgusting. comes to him from every side. that is. after them. that is. in the way of [different] types of chastisement. but can scarcely swallow. tafsir. ar-Ra’ d & Ibraheem 44 and We shall surely make you dwell in the land. in it. and every tyrant. for whoever fears the standing before Me. mixed with pus and blood — {                                                                       ‫ﭐ‬                                            } which he sips. {                                     ‫ﭐ‬     } And they sought victory. Juza’ [13]. of festering fluid — which is what issues out of the insides of the people of the Fire. [whoever fears] when he comes to stand before Me. their land. because of its acridity. the messengers sought assistance from God against their people. which he will enter. Surat Yusuf. disdaining obedience to God. yet he Taken from.

I fHewi l l . Taken from. have no power over anything that they have earned. after that chastisement. ar-Ra’ d & Ibraheem cannot die. and bring [about] a new creation. they. one in which the winds blow violently.oft hos ewhodi s be l i e v ei nt he i rL or d( a l l a dhī nak a f a r ūbi -rabbihim: t hes ubj e c t . have you not observed. over which none can have power (the genitive [clause beginning with ka-r a mā di n.s uc ha s kindness [to kin] or an act of charity — in the way that no benefit can be derived from them [it is because these works] — are as ashes over which the wind blows hard on a tempestuous day. tafsir. the disbelievers. 45 {          ‫ﭐ‬       ‫ﭐ‬           ٰ        ٰ                                                     ‫ﭐ‬            ‫ﭐ‬                                                ‫ﭐ‬         } The l i k e ne s s . they shall find no reward for it. Juza’ [13]. ‘ a sa s he s ’ ]c ons t i t ut e st hepr e di c a t eoft he[ a bov e mentioned] subject). O you being addressed (this is an interrogative meant a sa na f f i r ma t i v e )t ha tGodc r e a t e dt hehe a v e nsa ndt hee a r t hi nt r ut h?( bi ’ l -haqq is semantically c onnec t e dt o[ t hea c t i onoft hev e r b]k ha l a qa . there is a harsh chastisement.Tafsir al-Jalalayn. and still beyond him. making them as scattered dust.s ubs t i t ut e dby[ t hef ol l owi ng . in your place. since this was never a precondition.t her i g ht e ousone s . that is. in other words.‘ c r e a t e d’ ) .a ‘ mā l uhum. following on [from the previous one]. a severe one.t hede s c r i pt i on. [anything] that they had done in [their] life on earth.com . That is extreme error.O mankind. Surat Yusuf. [extreme] perdition! {                                                 ‫ﭐ‬      ‫ﭐ‬    ٰ      ٰ  ‫ﭐ‬              ‫ﭐ‬                } Have you not seen. ] ) :t he i rwor k s .Hec a nt a k ey oua wa y .

de f e nd.com .                                      ‫ﭐ‬                                       ‫ﭐ‬                                                                       ۤ       ‫ﭐ‬                      ‫ﭐ‬                                   } {                                            And they.Tafsir al-Jalalayn. Surat Yusuf. ‘ a nya s y l um’ . that is.wewoul dha v eg ui de dy ou. matter. [no] difficult.i se x pr e s s e d in the past tense because it will come to pass) all together.Wi l ly out he na v a i l .s a y . say to t hos ewhower ea r r og a nt . mi ni se x t r a ) . ar-Ra’ d & Ibraheem {              ‫ﭐ‬           ٰ        } 46 And that for God is surely no great.a ndwha tf ol l ows .usa g a i ns tt hec ha s t i s e me ntofGodi na nywa y ? ’ ( mi n‘ a dhā bi ’ L l ā himi ns ha y ’ i n:t hef i r s tmi ni se x pl i c a t i v e. then the weak. sally forth to God (wa-ba r a z ū:t hi s . we do not have any a s y l um’ . They. [ a ny ]r e f ug e( mi nma hī s . [all] creatures. the followers. Juza’ [13]. t heone sf ol l owe d.‘ I fGodha dg ui de dus .wewoul dha v ec a l l e d you to [right] guidance.t hos ewhower ef ol l owe d:‘ I nde e dwewer ey ourf ol l owe r s( t a ba ‘ a ni s t hepl ur a loft ā bi ‘ ) . tafsir. It is the same for us whether we rage [impatiently] or patiently endure. while the second one is partitive).          ‫ﭐ‬                                                                                            ‫ﭐ‬                       ‫ﭐ‬          ‫ﭐ‬                       ‫ﭐ‬          } {                               ‫ﭐ‬                                                                                                         ۤ                          Taken from.

says. Juza’ [13]. tafsir. whereas I promised you.[ no]powerorc a pa c i t y . [I cannot] bring aid to you. that this would not be. for having responded to me.a bi di ng( k hā l i dī nai sac i r c ums t a nt i a lqua l i f i e rofa ni mplied situation) therein by the leave of their Lord. God. and between t he ms e l v e s :‘ Pe a c e ! ’ . from God and from the angels.Tafsir al-Jalalayn. exalted be He. the disbelievers.r e g a r di ngr e s ur r ec t i ona ndr e quital.t oc ompe ly out of ol l owme . I cannot heed your [distress] call. and they [the people of the Fire] have gathered round him: ‘ T r ul yGodpr omi s e dy ouapr omi s eoft r ut h.I bl ī s. So do not blame me. for over you I had no warrant ( mi ns ul t ā n:mi ni se x t r a ) . and the people of Paradise are in Paradise and those of the Fire are in the Fire.L o!Idi s be l i e v e di ny ourma k i ngmea na s s oc i a t eofGodf or me r l y ’ . then failed you. but blame yourselves. {        ‫ﭐ‬                                                                           ‫ﭐ‬                    } Taken from. nor can you heed mine (read bimusrikhiyya or bi-mus r i k hī ) .e x c e ptt ha tIc a l l e d you and you responded to me. when the issue has been decided. they are admitted to gardens underneath whi c hr i v er sf l ow. during life on earth. fulfilling [it] to you. {                                                                ‫ﭐ‬                                     ‫ﭐ‬                              ‫ﭐ‬             } And those who believed and performed righteous deeds. ar-Ra’ d & Ibraheem 47 AndS a t a n. their greeting therein. there shall be a painful chastisement. says: Truly for the evildoers. Surat Yusuf.com .

that is.k a l i ma t a nt a y y i ba t a n] ) :ag oodl ys a y i ng .com .whi c hi s . Juza’ [13]. uprooted from upon the earth. Similarly. their religion and their Prophet.i sa sa goodly tree. how God has struck a similitude? (mathalan is substituted by [the f ol l owi ngwor ds . {                        ‫ﭐ‬                    ‫ﭐ‬                                             } And the similitude of a bad saying. are in heaven. Similarly. the word of unbelief. its branches. in the grave.t he Taken from.Tafsir al-Jalalayn. in the ground. [no] fixing or foundation. be admonished. a palm tree. in the life of this world and in the Hereafter. is as a bad tree. that is. by His will.a ndGods e ndsa s t r a yt hee v i l doe r s . and therefore believe. the profession of [His] Oneness. Surat Yusuf. as [reported] in the ha dī t hoft het woS ha y k hs[ a l -Buk hā r īa ndMus l i m] . his works are raised up to heaven and he receives the blessings and reward therefrom all the time. namely. so that they might remember.‘ t he r ei snog odbutGod’ . its fruit. And God strikes. having no stability. {                 ‫ﭐ‬                      ‫ﭐ‬       ‫ﭐ‬               ‫ﭐ‬               ‫ﭐ‬          ‫ﭐ‬            ‫ﭐ‬          ‫ﭐ‬                   ‫ﭐ‬       ‫ﭐ‬          } God confirms those who believe by a firm saying. and its shoots. similitudes for mankind. tafsir. the word of unbelief has no foundation. every season by the leave of its Lord. when the two angels question them about their Lord. He makes clear. and no shoot or blessing. its root set firm. a colocynth. {                                      ‫ﭐ‬        ‫ﭐ‬                                            ۤ       } it gives its produce. observed. ar-Ra’ d & Ibraheem 48 Have you not seen. and they respond correctly. the words of faith are set firm in the heart of the believer.

admitted — an evil place to settle! {      ‫ﭐ‬                                                                                          } And they have set up rivals to. t ot he m:‘ E nj oy ! .a ndt he r e f or et he ya r enotg ui de dt ot hec or r e c tr e s pons e . S a y . a ndGoddoe swhat He will.com . y ourr e t ur n. secretly and openly. before a day comes wherein there will be neither bargaining. functioning as an explicative): to which they shall be exposed. t hi swor l dofy our sf or a short time. tafsir. obs er v e d. t ha ti s . a s[ r e por t ed]i nt heha dī t h. t hos ewhoe x c ha ng e dGod’ sg r a c e . God. caused their people to take up residence in the Abode of Ruin? {        ‫ﭐ‬                               } Hell (jahannama: a supplement.‘ Wedonot k now’ . For lo! your j our ney ’ send. {                                                                                                            ‫ﭐ‬                             ‫ﭐ‬                  } Tell My servants who believe that they establish prayers and expend of that which We have provided them. 49 {         ‫ﭐ‬                                        ‫ﭐ‬                            ‫ﭐ‬                } Ha v ey ounots e e n. for unthankfulness — these were the disbelievers of Quraysh — and who. by leading them astray. t her e l i g i onofI s l a m. Surat Yusuf. that they might lead [others] astray (read liy a di l l ūorl i -y udi l l ū)f r om Hi swa y . associates [with].Tafsir al-Jalalayn.s a y i ngi ns t e a d. Juza’ [13]. ar-Ra’ d & Ibraheem di s be l i e v e r s .

Lo! man. 50                             ‫ﭐ‬                     ‫ﭐ‬                                ‫ﭐ‬                                   ‫ﭐ‬                   ‫ﭐ‬      ٰ    ٰ  ‫ﭐ‬              ‫ﭐ‬       ‫ﭐ‬  } {       ‫ﭐ‬  God it is Who created the heavens and the earth.y ou would not be able to count it. [laden] with passengers and cargo. And He has disposed for you the ships. is verily a wrong-doer and Taken from. that they may run upon the sea. Juza’ [13]. that you may seek of His bounty therein. that you may rest therein. according to your [individual] best interests. Surat Yusuf. nor befriending. ar-Ra’ d & Ibraheem ransoming. tafsir.com . by His leave. {                       ‫ﭐ‬                       ‫ﭐ‬                                                           } And He gives you of all that you ask of Him.y ouc oul dne v e rnumberi t . and He sends down water from the heaven and with it He brings forth fruits as sustenance for you. and He has disposed for you the night.Tafsir al-Jalalayn. that is. moving in their courses without pause. at His commandment. and the day. and He has disposed for you the rivers. the disbelieving [man]. {        ‫ﭐ‬         ‫ﭐ‬                              ‫ﭐ‬         ‫ﭐ‬            } And He has disposed for you the sun and the moon. [when there will not be] any friendship of any benefit: this is the Day of Resurrection. And if you were t oe numer a t eGod’ sg r a c e s .me a ni ngHi sbe s t owa lofg r a c e s . constant.

                   ‫ﭐ‬              ‫ﭐ‬               ۤ             ‫ﭐ‬                        ‫ﭐ‬        ‫ﭐ‬                              ‫ﭐ‬                                                           ۤ            } {         Our Lord. 51 {        ‫ﭐ‬                               ‫ﭐ‬                   ‫ﭐ‬     ٰ           ‫ﭐ‬                             } And. verily belongs with me.bec a us eoft he i r[ ma nk i nd’ s ]wor s hi p of them.s ec ur e— God granted him this petition and thus made it [Mecca] a sanctuary in which no human blood is shed.‘ MyL or d. truly You are Forgiving. Surat Yusuf. {                                                                      ‫ﭐ‬                                   } My Lord. prey is not hunted and one which is never deserted in any of its parts — and turn me and my sons away from serving idols. Ishmael and his mother Hagar. by Your Sacred House. which had been there Taken from. that is.Me c c a . So whoever follows me. Juza’ [13]. belongs with those who follow my religion.ha v el e dma nyofma nk i nda s t r a y . ar-Ra’ d & Ibraheem unthankful!. indeed I have made some of my seed.whe nAbr a ha ms a i d. Mecca. tafsir.ma k et hi sl a nd. ever wronging his own soul through [acts of] disobedience and ungratefulness t owa r dsGod’ sg r a c e . and whoever disobeys me. namely.com . to dwell in a valley where there is no sown land. believing in the Oneness of God. no person is wronged.Tafsir al-Jalalayn.me nt i on. idol s . truly they. Merciful: this was before he was aware of the fact that God does not forgive idolatry.

make me an establisher of prayer. tafsir. ar-Ra’ d & Ibraheem 52 since before the Flood.a ndwha twepr oc l a i m. of my seed. for [the town of] al-T ā ’ i fwa st r a ns f e r r e dt ot ha t[ l a nd] . Juza’ [13]. So make some of the hearts of men yearn.Tafsir al-Jalalayn. despite [my] old age.k e e ps e c r e t .‘ ofmys e e d’ ]i sbe c a us eGodi nf or me dhi mt ha ts omeof Taken from.Y ouk nowwha twehi de . and. {         ‫ﭐ‬                                                ‫ﭐ‬                     ‫ﭐ‬               ‫ﭐ‬  } Praise be to God Who has given me. {        ‫ﭐ‬            ‫ﭐ‬                   ‫ﭐ‬        ٰ                                                          } OurL or d.Andnot hi ng( mi ns ha y ’ i n: mi ni se x t r a )i shi dde nf r om Godi nt hee a r t hori nt hehe a v e n:t he s ema yc ons t i t ut eGod’ swor dsor the words of Abraham.t heBy z a nt i ne sa nda l l ofma nk i ndwoul dha v ey e a r ne dt owa r ds t he m’ . {                                              ‫ﭐ‬                 ‫ﭐ‬     } My Lord.Andpr ov i det he m wi t hfruits. those who will establish it (the us eof[ pa r t i t i v e ]mi n[ i nmi ndhur r i y a t ī . Ishmael — born to him when he [Abraham] was 99 years old — and Isaac — born to him when he was 112 years old.com . towards them — I bn‘ Abbā ss a i d.‘ Ha dHes a i d:“ Ma k e[ a l l ]t hehe a r t s ofme n…” . incline and long. that they may establish prayer. that they might be thankful: and this [petition] was granted. Surat Yusuf. Lo! my Lord is indeed the Hearer of supplication. make.a s s ur edl yt hePe r s i a ns . our Lord.

says: {      ‫ﭐ‬                                                      ‫ﭐ‬                             ‫ﭐ‬               } And do not suppose that God is heedless of what the evildoers. Taken from. their gaze. but it is also said that his mother submitted [to God]. Surat Yusuf. without chastisement. do. He but gives them respite.[ t heda y ]i t shall be effected. became clear. ‘ mys on’ )a nd[ f or g i v e ]be l i e v e r sont heda ywhe nt her e c k oni ngs ha l lc omet opa s s ’ . God. exalted be He. {       ‫ﭐ‬                                                        ‫ﭐ‬         } 53 Our Lord. their sight. the [supplication] mentioned. Juza’ [13]. the disbelievers from among the people of Mecca. Mighty and Majestic. devoid of any sense. Our Lord! And accept my supplication. until a day when eyes shall stare wide-ope n. returning not to them.or[ y e ta not he rv a r i a ntr e a di ngbe i ng ]wa l a dī .com .Tafsir al-Jalalayn. t o the heaven. tafsir. (the alternative r e a di ng[ he r e ]be i ngt hes i ng ul a rwā l i dī [ ‘ myf a t he r ’ ] . and their hearts as air.be c a us eoft het e r r orofwha tt he ys e e( ones a y ss ha k ha s aba s a r uf ul ā nt ome a n ‘ heope ne dt hem[ hi se y e s ]a nddi dnots hutt he m’ ) . {                                                                                   } a st he yc omeha s t e ni ng( muht i ‘ ī nai sac i r c ums t a nt i a l qua l i f i e r )wi t ht he i rhe a dst ur ne dupwa r ds . ar-Ra’ d & Ibraheem them [his seed] would be disbelievers). because of their being terror-stricken. forgive me and my parents — this was before their enmity towards God.

made clear. i nt heQur ’ ā n. the Day of Resurrection.I ti st he n s a i dt ot he mi nr ebuk e :‘ Butdi dy ounotus et os we a rf or me r ly. Surat Yusuf. and their plotting. tafsir. buty oudi dnott a k ehe e d.Tafsir al-Jalalayn. by way of punishment — but you were not restrained [thereby] — and We struck.com .f orabr i e fwhi l e . of the day when chastisement will come upon them.byr e t ur ni ngust ot hewor l d. s i mi l i t ude sf ory ou.bya f f i r mi ng[ Y our ]Onene s s . in the dwelling-places of those who wronged themselves. the disbelievers. in the world. but that they are Taken from.wi l ls a y . mankind. {         ‫ﭐ‬                                                  ‫ﭐ‬                                 } And verily they plotted. and those who did evil. that is to say.g i v eusr e s pi t e . O Muhammad (s). their plot — when they desired to kill him. in it. namely.‘ OurL or d. ar-Ra’ d & Ibraheem {                                              ۤ                     ‫ﭐ‬                                         ٰ                        ۤ               ‫ﭐ‬                    ‫ﭐ‬                         ‫ﭐ‬           } 54 And warn.a ndf ol l owt heme s s e ng e r s ’ . was not such whereby mountains should be moved. Juza’ [13]. meaning that it is not of any importance. make [them] have fear. even though it be great. that for you there woul dbenopa s s i ng[ a wa y ] ?( mi nz a wā l i n: mi ni se x t r a )f r omt hi s[ wor l d]t ot heHe r e a f t e r ? {        ‫ﭐ‬                                                                    ۤ               ‫ﭐ‬    ٰ                   } And you dwelt. [those] from among communities of old. who disbeliev e d. knowledge or the requital thereof [is with God]. through unbelief. or detain him [in his house] or banish him — but their plotting is with God.t ha t wemi g htr e s pondt oY ourc a l l . and it became clear to you how We dealt with them. against the Prophet (s).

Surat Yusuf. to His messengers.a nd[ t he i rpl ot t i ng ]wa snots uc h …) . it is also said [to be a reference to] the laws of Islam. Juza’ [13]. {                    ‫ﭐ‬                    ٰ    ٰ  ‫ﭐ‬       ‫ﭐ‬           ‫ﭐ‬                  } And mention. Lord of Retribution. they shall exit from [their] graves. the day when the earth will be changed to other than the earth and the heavens.I ti ss a i dt ha t‘ pl ot t i ng ’he r ei s[ a c t ua l l yar e f e r e nc et o]t he i r unbe l i e f .I ti ss a i dt ha tt heus eof‘ mount a i ns ’he r ei sme a ntt obel i t e r a l . however. ar-Ra’ d & Ibraheem 55 onl yha r mi ngt he ms e l v e st he r e by .“ Wher ewi l lpe opl ebeont ha tda y ? ”Hes a i d.‘ v er i l y ’ ] . the Day of Resurrection: mankind shall be gathered onto a white clear earth. the Almighty. Mus l i mr e l a t e st hef ol l owi ngha dī t h:‘ T he Pr ophe t( s )wa sa s k e d.“ Ont heBr i dg e( s i r ā t ) ”’ . {          ‫ﭐ‬                 ‫ﭐ‬                                   ‫ﭐ‬               } So do not suppose that God will fail [to keep] His promise. of victory. as [reported] i nt heha dī t hoft het woS ha y k hs[ a l -Buk hā r ī a ndMus l i m] . to God. alternatively. the One. against those who disobey Him. one should read it as [if it were] wa-māk ā na . Victor. tafsir. which are likened to these [mountains] in the way that they are established and fixed (a variant reading has la-t a z ūl u[ i ns t e a d of li-t a z ūl a ] . Truly God is Mighty.a nd they shall come forth. according to the former [reading].Tafsir al-Jalalayn. namely.T hi ss e c ond[ r e a di ng ]i sc ons ona ntwi t h[ God’ ss a y i ng ] :Wher e byt hehe a v ensa r ea l mos t torn and the earth split asunder and the mountains fall crashing [Q.in which case the intended meaning is that [the e x t e ntof ]t he i rpl ot t i ngi sg r e a t . nothing able to escape Him.

chained together with their [individual] devils.i not herwords. because it ignites fire more intensely. {       ‫ﭐ‬             ‫ﭐ‬                                ‫ﭐ‬           } that God may requite (li-yajziy ai ss e ma nt i c a l l yc onnec t e dt o[ t hev er b]ba r a z ū. {       ‫ﭐ‬                                   ٰ                      ۤ                                                  ٰ     } T hi s .Tafsir al-Jalalayn. by way of the arguments contained in it.‘ t heys ha l lc ome f or t h’ )e v er ys oul f orwha ti tha se a r ne d. is One God. namely. God. Surat Yusuf. Juza’ [13]. the sinners. in chains. T r ul yGodi ss wi f ta tr e c k oni ng— He shall r e c k onwi t ha l lc r e a t ur e si na boutha l fada yoft heda y soft hi swor l d.a soneha dī th states to that effect. possessors of intellect.com . {      ‫ﭐ‬              ٰ                                } their shirts [made] of pitch. Taken from.Qur ’ ā n.i saPr oc l a ma t i onf orma nk i nd. tafsir. manacles or collars. and that they may know. ofg ooda ndev i l . the disbelievers. and that people of pith. and so that they may be warned thereby. ar-Ra’ d & Ibraheem {        ‫ﭐ‬                                    ‫ﭐ‬         } 56 And you shall see. that He. O Muhammad (s). it was revealed in order to proclaim to them. on that day coupled. and their faces are engulfed by the Fire.
