POWER FACTOR CORRECTION OF

INDUCTION MOTORS USING PWM
INVERTER FED AUXILLARY STATOR
WINDING

Introduction
 Induction motor works at very low power factor and
affects the transmission system.
 Use of fixed shunt capacitors cannot fulfill load
changes.

 If the reactive power of the motor is compensated
(from DC bus), then the power factor improves.

Proposed scheme .

Electrically isolated. .Proposed scheme Additional Stator Winding Wound along the main stator winding.

Equivalent circuit (For Conventional Induction Motor) .

winding.Equivalent circuit Rs2 – Resistance of Aux. Xs2 – Reactance of Aux. . Vs2 – AC Voltage given. winding.

Equivalent circuit Rs2 – Resistance of Aux. winding. Xlm – Mutual Leakage Reactance . winding. Vs2 – AC Voltage given. Xs2 – Reactance of Aux.

Modified Equivalent Circuit Equivalent circuit is restructured AC Voltage supply replaced by variable capacitor .

Simplified Equivalent circuit Xceq = Xc2-Xs2 Req = Re [ j Xlm + ( Rr/s + j Xr )//j Xm ] Xeq = Im [ j Xlm + ( Rr/s + j Xr )//j Xm ] .

.Simplified Equivalent circuit Condition for unity pf is Im [ Z1 + Z2 // Z3 ] = 0 Hence PF can be varied by varying Xceq.

Phasor Diagram For Conventional Induction Motor .

Phasor Diagram IS1 is the required current .

Phasor Diagram IS2 is the current to be added to IS12 to get IS1 .

Phasor Diagram IS2 cosθ = IS12 sinø .

Phasor Diagram VS1 = ES2 + IS1.(XS1 + RS1 ) .

Phasor Diagram ES2 = VS2 + IS2.RS2 .XS2 + IS2.

Control Strategy .

Economics of Transmission & Distribution system improves. Disadvantage Initial cost of the machine is increased . Peak Demand of the load center is reduced. Rapidly varying loads can also use this technique.Benefits     Quality of the power improves.
