FAL RIVER FESTIVAL
The Fal River Festival, which will run from May 28th to June 6th in 2010, is all about celebrating life on the River Fal in Cornwall. The 10 day festival includes a wide range of events from music and drama, the arts and heritage to swimming, rowing races and walking. The festival, established in 2006, is a celebration of life on the river and is a chance to really embrace the places, people, history and cultures that connect everybody to this very Cornish river. These 10 fantastic days of celebration will offer something for everyone and is a real chance to engage with life on the river while discovering some of its fascinating history.

The Cornwall Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty is one single protected area split up into 12 separate parts. These make up the very best of Cornwall’s dramatic coast and rugged moorland, ancient farmland, tumbling streams, hidden woods and placid creeks and estuaries. The AONB is studded with remote farms, small villages, ancient monuments and mining or quarrying remains. The Cornwall AONB covers an area of 958 sq km or 370 sq miles – well over a quarter of the County. www.cornwall-aonb.gov.uk

I am exploring the shapes and patterns that are formed in nature through a variety of media. I am interested in surface texture and the way it is built up in layers like contours on a map. Prices from £20. Refreshments; pleasurable grounds; family-friendly. Wheelchair access.

My interest in depicting the human figure has become more directed into themes that range from pregnant women, of different ages and backgrounds, to the more physical sport of archery, but landscape has begun to emerge as an element of my examination of colour. Prices from £20. Wheelchair access.

The time has come round again to celebrate the cream of talent emerging from Truro College’s Art and Design department. By now a popular event on the Cornwall arts calendar, there will be a vast and exciting range of talent on display. From Textiles to Graphics, Silversmithing and Jewellery to Fine Art and Ceramics, work from students of both full time and part time courses will be represented in the Marquee on the Piazza. “The aim of ‘Lemon Trifle’ is to celebrate the diversity and excellence of work produced by students of all ages studying art and design courses at Truro College within the centre of Truro,” comments Mark Dunford, Deputy Team Leader for Art and Design. “Using a temporary exhibition space, in the heart of the community, will provide visitors with a unique insight into the highly individual and diverse work produced by students from the art and design area. An exhibition of this kind can have a dramatic impact upon the students’ futures.”

Admission is free and staff and students from Truro College will be on hand all week to answer questions about the work, or help those looking to find the right art and design course for them, whether they be a school leaver wanting to enter full time study or an adult learner wishing to develop new creative skills on a part time basis. The college offers a range of qualifications in art and design ranging from A levels to International Baccalaureate, National Diplomas and HE Foundation Degrees. A visit to ‘Lemon Trifle’ might inspire you to follow your creative dream or you might be tempted to purchase a piece of the freshest art on the market to grace your home or office. TIME TRAVELLERS GO... SECRETS AND SPIES
Mon 31st May - Fri 4th June: 11am -5pm After several years out of the public eye, Peter Green is back with a new band. Now seated centre stage, what is obvious is that the show revolves around him, and that he is in the company of notably simpatico musicians. Peter Green and Friends is about the man himself enjoying the performance experience - this is not a Peter Green’s Fleetwood Mac greatest hits band. Naturally, no Peter Green appearance would be complete without a few of his classic compositions, but now the focus is on fresh renditions of Peter’s personal blues, R&B and soul favourites. The repertoire is an exciting, unpredictable mix and you can’t help but notice him smiling and laughing as his guitar and voice shine once again. The band’s longevity and success can be attributed to the virtuosity and dedication of the principal players - vocalist Baz Oldfield has enjoyed a recording career spanning 20 years, submitting several sessions for BBC Radio 1 and having over 50 of his own songs published in the process.

Trumpeter Cris Haines trained at the London College of Music, taught jazz at Swansea University, played sessions at Polydor Records and has appeared with Joe Tex, Georgie Fame and Eddie” Knock on Wood” Floyd. Bass player Julian Smith is another former session man, hitting the Top Ten with Flowered Up as well as touring with Rose Royce and drummer Rob Wilding, in his capacity as original stickman for The Racing Cars, enjoyed

Above all, however, the boys know how to deliver - classic Blues Brothers standards rub shoulders with Motown floorfillers - Everybody Needs Somebody, Soul Man, Gimme Some Lovin’, Shake A Tailfeather, Higher And Higher - the hits keep coming throw in a liberal dash of Rock’n’Roll, a pinch of Swing Jazz and you’re guaranteed an unforgettably energised party experience! The Booze Brothers have been riding high amongst the cream of international tribute bands since 1998, when they were formed from a South Wales musical collective with the twin imperatives of musical excellence and exuberant fun, and consequently, in recent years, have graced the stage at many of Europe’s major festivals and left a string of satisfied customers in their wake, including the Mayor of Liverpool, British Airways, Chelsea FC and the Liberal Democrats!

A veteran of countless live performances, he forged his reputation appearing with such luminaries as Jools Holland, Van Morrison, The Pogues and Jerry Lee Lewis. Let’s Get Cooking children’s challenge Let’s Get Cooking is a national network of cooking clubs for children, families and their communities across England. During its first five years, Let’s Get Cooking is using £20 million from the Big Lottery Fund to set up the first 5,000 clubs. Two teams from Marloborough school’s Let’s Get Cooking Club will each demonstrate how to cook a seafood dish with help from local chefs Sanjay Kumar and Mark Puckey. Let’s Get Cooking has three key targets: • by the end of the five-year programme 1,106,300 children, family members and members of the local community will increase their food preparation or cooking skills as a result of Let’s Get Cooking Compered by:

• 70% of participants who learn a new healthy eating skill through Let’s Get Cooking will replicate that skill at home • 50% of children, young people and families who participate in Let’s Get Cooking will increase their intake of nutritionally healthy food. Learning to cook ‘good food that is good for you’ gives club members the knowledge, experience and practical skills to enable them to cook food for themselves, friends and families. Cooking is a great way of developing social and personal skills; many clubs have reported improved behaviour and confidence in students. As they become involved in making decisions about club activities, serving food at events and using their cooking skills, club members gain confidence and enterprise skills. They develop a sense of responsibility and team work. www.letsgetcooking.org.uk

Mark Puckey: Summer Cooking Sit back and relax as you watch Mark Puckey, head chef of Rick Stein’s Seafood School, demonstrate three summer dishes. He’ll be talking you through what’s in season as well as sharing tips and techniques.

LIVE MUSIC CELTIC NIGHT GALLOWGLASS & 3 DAFT MONKEYS
Gallowglass Gallowglass are 3 guys from St Austell, 1 from Mevagissey, and 1 from Lower Stenalees, playing loud, stompy folk rock, with too much guitar! 3 Daft Monkeys A veritable melee of musical styles are all evident within the 3 Daft Monkeys’ music - a unique brand of rousing vocals, frenetic fiddling, 12-string guitar, dancing bass and foot drum produce a ‘style’ which is far too diverse to be pigeonholed into one genre. Cornish trio 3DM create a stunning blend of upbeat, danceable music which, despite all its world influences, remains undeniably British. Whatever your taste in music, 3 Daft Monkeys offer something special and their unique blend of high octane, funkedup folk is guaranteed to get you dancing!
