Pupils go for a walk - on the bus A WALKING bus scheme is beginning this month at St Peter’s CE Primary School. In an effort to reduce congestion at the start and end of the day, the school is encouraging more pupils to walk instead of using the car. The school has been given the go ahead to operate a walking bus throughout June/ July. If successful, it is hoped that the scheme will become permanent in September. It will operate from the car park next to Heswall Hall, allowing parents to drop off safely. The children will be led down the Mount and down School Hill, using the top gate to come into school. The school will also be encouraging parents to avoid parking in School Hill to make this part of the route almost ‘pedestrian only.’ Champagne and scones AToMIC Kitten singer Natasha Hamilton held her recent baby shower at Roses Tea Rooms, in Heswall. Guests tucked into sandwiches and scones as well as champagne – served from teapots. Morris women’s busy weekend
THE early May Bank Holiday Weekend was a busy one for Mockbeggar Morris, Wirral’s Ladies North West Morris Team. They were host to Mersey Morris Men, Wirral’s Cotswold Morris Side and to guests from The Isle of Man, Manx Folk Dance Society. Rising at 4am on 1st May the members of the three teams went to Thurstaston to enjoy the traditional Morris custom of “dancing in the dawn” at Thors Stone. Following breakfast the sides travelled to Claire House to entertain some of the children. It was a beautiful May Day, just right for dancing and the rest of the day was spent at The Grand Entrance to Birkenhead Park. The Friends of Birkenhead Park and Anne Litherland, Head Ranger had invited the three sides to display their distinctive styles of dancing against the imposing Grand Entrance Archway. The evening was spent enjoying an informal Ceilidh at the Parish Hall of The Church of the Good Shepherd, Heswall where Mockbeggar practice every Thursday 8-10pm. Sunday’s weather was not so kind, as the three sides headed for The National Boat Museum, Ellesmere Port. Although they braved the wind for the first session after lunch they entertained visitors inside. on Monday the Manx Guests returned home having spent a tiring if fulfilling weekend enjoying a taste of Wirrral and promising to return. If anyone is interested in finding out more about Wirral’s Morris Sides website details are www.mockbeggarmorris.org or www.merseymorrismen.com

Improve your appearance without surgery

New cosmetic services at the Sandstone Clinic, West Kirby

WHen Wayne Roberts of the Sandstone Clinic invited me along to try out a new Laser Lipo treatment which would guarantee me inch loss I was a little bit dubious never having heard of it before, but thought give it a go “all I have to lose is inches”, writes Karen Schroder I arrived at the Sandstone Clinic and was met by Denise Roberts, a fully trained and qualified Laser Lipo technician, who very quickly put me at ease. After filling a medical questionaire it was time for the treatment to begin. I had decided to have my tummy area done as although I do sit ups every day, I still have a few wobbly bits to contend with. Taking a tape measure, Denise measured three areas around my stomach, I then lay on a bed with a cover over me whilst Denise explained the science behind the treatment which in itself is very simple, A belt with laser paddles was placed around my tummy, the laser beams then penetrate the skin to a depth of 9mm, to reach the layers of fat which then sets off a reaction which involves the fat being broken down and put back into the digestive system where it is then dispersed the natural way… After just 20 minutes the treatment was over and I was measured again, I was amazed I had lost a total of 21/2 inches off my stomach area. Denise recommended I go home and do 40 minutes of exercise to really ensure the treatments success. I have not put the inches back on and I would definitely recommend this treatment to anyone looking for a permanent and cost effective way to lose inches without having to resort to invasive surgery.

THE children of Heswall Primary School now know a little more about the workings of the human body. the dAWning oF the AWning
With the promise of record-beating temperatures this summer, awnings could finally come out of the shade and top the list of musthave items for alfresco living this year. That’s the view of the West Coast Local’s very own expert on interior design, window blinds and shades, Marc McQuilliam from Apollo Blinds. Marc says that modern awnings are packed with features that can enhance the outdoor experience and give any patio or veranda area a new lease of life. “First and foremost an awning is a shading product and provides respite from the blistering sun during the day,” he said. “Quality awnings have a high UV rating which means the sun’s harmful rays simply don’t pass through the material. This provides a cool shaded area where people can still enjoy being outside on a sunny day. “When the weather isn’t quite so good or the sun goes down the versatility of an awning comes into play. Modern awnings come with a variety of additional features including lights and heaters to create a shelter which helps to keep it a comfortable place to be for those underneath it. More always means worse – Kingsley Amis “And, for those who love their gadgets, awnings are available with sun sensors, which extend the canopy automatically depending on the strength of the daylight.” Conservatories have helped homeowners create another living space around their homes and Marc believes that if the sun shines and the UK has a long-overdue glorious summer then awnings could finally follow in the footsteps of conservatories. “We’ve had a couple of ropey summers and there’s a pent-up frustration from Brits who are desperately hoping this is the year of glorious sunshine because they want to get out into the garden and enjoy life outdoors,” he added. “And one thing that is central to them doing that to the full is having an awning. “it feels like the popularity of awnings is grown by stealth but they are finally breaking into the mainstream and topping the lists of things needed to have a great summer outdoors.” For more information about how awnings can help heswall Local readers make the most of their gardens this summer then please contact him on 0151 203 6160 or by visiting his website at www.apollo-blinds.co.uk/wirral.

JUNE is the month when shrubs and perennials are flowering at their best and the foliage is still fresh before the summer tiredness sets in. Trees such as Acer palmatum have wonderful coloured leaves in pale green, deep red or salmon pink depending on the variety. If you have a garden sheltered from strong wind, with a free draining soil that does not dry out, try one of the smaller varieties making sure to plant it well away from any buildings. The shrub, Weigela flowers in June and is easy to grow with a long flowering period. They have white, pink or red flowers and some varieties have purple or variegated foliage. This shrub will grow to 6ft or 2m in size but if it gets too large you can cut it back hard, preferably just after flowering. It grows best in sunny or lightly shaded positions. A smaller shrub for June is Cistus, of which there are many varieties both tall and lower growing. They are evergreen shrubs for sunny dry situations and have 2 inch flowers in white or pink, which look as though they are made of crumpled tissue paper. Lupins and delphiniums flower in June but can be damaged by slugs as they start to grow so keep a look out and grow them in drier positions that the slugs seem to favour less. The magenta purple flowers of the perennial Geranium Ann Folkard are striking and last for a long time. After the first flowering in summer, cut the leaves and dead flowers back and you should get a second flowering in autumn. Grow it in front of the yellow flowered Lysimachia punctata (Yellow Loosestrife) for a striking combination of magenta and yellow flowers. Although last winter was tough on plants, it may be worth considering the tender prostrate osteospermums Cannington Roy or Whirlygig. This perennial has wonderful white and pink daisy flowers and does well in the sun. I have it planted next to the slightly tender small shrub Convolvulus cneorum (no it is not bindweed but a small well behaved shrub!) that has silver leaves and white flowers at the same time as the osteospermum. Both made it through the winter in a sheltered position. Janet Heath, Garden Mentor Tel 01244 318258 www.gardenmentor.co.uk

A report by the national Consumer Council makes worrying reading for a lot of families. The report stated that around 27 million of us have not yet made a Will, and as a result, of those left behind, millions will suffer financial and personal hardship. The reason most people give for not having a Will is that it is something that ‘they keep meaning to do’. Unfortunately, not having got round to making a Will can cause untold complications after the death of a loved one. if a person dies without making a Will, then their estate is dealt with under the rules of intestacy. Most people assume that their spouse “will get everything anyway so why bother”. Under intestacy rules that is not necessarily the case. For non-married partners it is even worse, there is no such thing as common law wives or husbands, therefore they have no rights to inherit, no matter how long they have lived together. The above situations can be avoided with a simple Will. however, the ‘right Will’ for your own individual circumstances will enable you to make sure that your estate goes where you want it to go, to your loved ones. This includes helping to protect your assets against third parties such as Care Fees and inheritance tax. in home Legal Services will be pleased to guide you on how to make the right Will for your family in the comfort and privacy of your own home, so that you can leave love rather than potential misery, hardship and confusion.

DID you know that West Wirral has it’s very own classic car club? Triumph Appreciation (Wirral) and Friends’ has been meeting every month at The Cottage Loaf, Thurstaston for almost 20 years, has over 50 members and is very active!

Dave’s Triumphant love affair
HI I’m Dave Evennett and I like cars! My Dad was chief designer at Meccano, the original makers of Dinky Toys, so what would you expect. During the early years after the war when toys were scarce I was brought up on a diet of Dinky Toys, Hornby Dublo Trains and Meccano Sets. Small wonder I still like playing with things like that, except these days they are usually a bit bigger! Thirty five years ago I bought, second-hand, a Triumph 2.5 PI Estate car (PI stood for Petrol Injection, something Triumph pioneered). This car was incredibly

advanced and my love affair with Triumphs began. I found myself attracted to every model in the range and wanted one of each. Realsing my rescources and the demands of family life would seriously limit my scope I came up with a brilliant idea. I would get together with others folk of like mind and enjoy their cars instead....at their expense, of course. Sorted. I started by knocking on doors where ever I saw a Triumph on the driveway and to this day Bob and Peter are still amongst my best friends. A few years later we decided to try and attract more enthusiasts so we put a little invitation in the local rag and 35 people turned up! That night in the Cottage Loaf in Thurstaston ‘Triumph Appreciation (Wirral) and Friends’ was born. over the coming months I hope to introduce you to some of those friends and of course their cars.
