Am I in the Right Room? I will be standing in the hallway by the door to my classroom ready to greet students on the first day of school. I understand it can be very daunting to meet new people and go to new classes, but I feel with good introductions on the first day of class, as well as reassuring them they are in the right place by checking their schedule and the room number. I will also greet them by saying Welcome to Precalculus for example. Where Am I Supposed to Sit? For seating arrangements, I will use an assigned seating style each grading cycle that will change. The desks will be numbered in their rows, and students will learn what number desk they are supposed to sit in on the first day of class. When a seating arrangement changes, students will receive new numbers of new chairs at that time. What Are the Rules in this Classroom? The rules and regulations for my classroom will be gone over in detail on the first day of class. In the dual credit courses, we will also have a syllabus which students will go over. In these syllabi, also lies a copy of some of the rules of the classroom that students are expected to follow. What Will I Be Doing This Year? As with the rules, the content and goals will be laid out in detail in the courses syllabus for the dual credit courses. If a course is not dual credit, then the teacher will go over the goals of the course on the first day of class. Students should know what they will be able to do mathematically by the time they finish the year in the course. How Will I Be Graded? The percentage weights of the types of assignments will be gone over in detail on the first day of class. They are also contained in the syllabus for the dual credit classes. Every time an assignment is graded, students will know what category they fall in. Who is the Teacher as a Person? For myself, I will introduce myself on the first day of class. In addition, my room will also be decorated and make use of the present bulletin boards. My desk will also have pictures and other things to kind of give slices of who I am as a person and what things I like to do.
Will the Teacher Treat Me as a Human Being?
Yes, I believe in treating students with respect. Even though it is true I am the adult and will be the teacher, I do treat students with respect, and expect the same in return. Students are human beings, not just subjects to teach to. I believe they all have feelings and students will receive detailed feedback on their work so they can work toward the goals for the year and feel a great surge of accomplishment.
