Inquiry Questions Answered:
Are professional lives and personal lives kept separate or are they one and the same?
Do people consider their careers part of themselves or just something to do?
How does a professional life affect a person's life?
Do professional lives take over people's lives completely?
Do people identify themselves with their professional lives?
Keywords: Survey
Summary:
Based on the responses I have so far I concluded that people like who they are professionally and
dedicate themselves to their jobs a bit more than they do to their personal lives, however they
don't see their jobs as who they are and try to keep the two separate, additionally I have mixed
responses about whether or not people Identify or want to be identified by their jobs, but see their
jobs having a positive effect on their lives.
Comment: I expect to receive more responses soon and that might change the results I acquired
from my summary, however I believe that's highly unlikely.

Inquiry Questions Answered:
How do people balance their professional and personal lives? Are professional lives and personal
lives kept separate or are they one and the same?
How does a professional life affect a person's life?
Keywords: Balance, Work, Personal
Summary:
In this article Work and Life, the authors here discuss the balance between work and life,
and how managers should deal with this balance. They discuss the role of the manager in helping
an employee balance their professional and work lives to help them reach their fullest potential
in their work, because if the balance is disrupted it could hinder a person's ability to work, and
the authors use many real life examples in order to discuss this subject.
We begin with the authors Friedman, Christensen, Degroot. Telling us about how
managers should not push their employees to make their jobs their purpose in life but rather one
of the most important things in life, keeping a good balance between the two. By scheduling their
lives to support and fulfil their personal goals and professional expectations, and the authors
illustrate this with an example, a man named jim was devoted to his work putting his work ahead
of everything including spending time with his son, until he got injured and jim realised how
little time he spends with his family and so in collaboration with jim's manager steve in order to
reschedule jim's time and work procedure which eventually lead to jim having enough time with
his family and work, and that also lead eventually to increasing jim's performance in work.
Comment: They discussed tactics in order to balance the lives of the employee, as well the
stories of these employees, shows a great deal of how professional lives affect their personal
lives and vice versa, In addition to the ways that people create this balance, the basics of this
article is that people should try to balance their professional and personal lives, and gives ways
to help managers help their employees do that in a way that helps increase productivity.
Further Questions:
Do these tactics work for everybody or just in these cases?
Are people truly able to balance their lives or is this just a temporary solution?

Inquiry Questions Answered:
How does a professional life affect a person's life?
Keywords: legacy, work, change
Summary: This blog mentions ways to leave a legacy behind, one of the two that interests my
research is first, leaving a lasting result, which he describes as something making a change that
helped people, which can be accomplished in many ways, such as financial success in your
company. And the second thing is passing on knowledge which can be coaching employees to
help them in their jobs.
Commentary: even though the blog is very vague and general in its word usage, it had a very
good message and properly was intentional to leave it for interpretations since the topic is very
wide. However he does mention some specifics which helped in my interpretation of the text.
Further Questions:
Does a legacy fulfil a person's life?

Inquiry Questions Answered:
How does a professional life affect a person's life?
Does professional lives take over people's lives completely?
Keywords: work affecting life.
Summary: in this article we see the author talking about how work can affect lives negatively,
and even though he never specifically says the word, the author is describing burnout, which is
when physical or mental exhaustion, and he talks about how that can affect your life and some of
the tactics that can be taken in order to cure a burnout, which can be seeking help and changing
some of your life style choices, and work habits.
Commentary: The article was mainly a help article however it does address the negative effects
that work can have on a person, and it gave a pretty good look about how bad the negative affect
can be, roding friendships, making relationships stressful, and taking a toll on our mental and
physical health.
Further Questions:
Would leaving your job is a viable option for burnout?

Summary:This article mostly discuss how work and relationships go, and how partners in a
relationship try to handle both careers, and it goes about that in many ways. One of the things
discussed is the psychological effects on the partners in the relationship, how when one partner
brings work home or being unable to spend time together, the author Jarrett Christian does give
suggestions on how a couple could handle some of these issues.
Commentary: This article does give a very real look on some of the problems that many people
are highly likely to face, since they involve employment and relationships, which many people
would have at the same time.
Further Questions:
Many of these problems are stress related which could go away on its own, so is taking action
necessary?

Reflection:
So far I have collected a variety of sources, some form websites, blogs, articles, survey. And they
have painted a pretty clear image on what the situation is in the real world regarding how work
affects life, and now I do feel confident about my heading into my presentation, since my
research has yielded some pretty sizable information that I can work with. Of my resources the
top would be my survey Survey About Life and Work, Harvard Business Review, and the
Work/Life Separation Is Impossible. In that order, mostly because of the amount of information
that I can work with from these sources. I think that having sources from all over really helped
me get a wide range of information ,and there was a big difference from the results that I had
from source to source. I designed my survey in a way that I wouldn't trouble the people that I am
interviewing, since the topic has very profound meaning and everyone deals with it in their own

way, but I also made sure to receive answers that would cover all my inquiry questions which are
listed below.
Inquiry Questions:
1-How do people balance their professional and personal lives?
A-Are professional lives and personal lives kept separate or are they one and the same?
B-Do people consider their careers part of themselves or just something to do?
2-How does a professional life affect a person's life?
A-Does professional lives take over people's lives completely?
B-Do people identify themselves with their professional lives?
Also while researching I tried to find a book but unfortunately I couldn't find one that had what I
needed so mostly I resorted to the internet, and since this was a personal matter that many people
struggle with I had no problem finding sources.
