GLOSSARY OF LIGHTING TERMS

Ballast
A device used to start and operate discharge lamps. It may include a dimmer.
Beam
A cone of light emitted by a luminaire.
Beam Angle
If youre into reading light-performance data, beam angle is the point at which the Intensity of a
source drops to 50% of maximum (center reading) measured in degrees of the full angle. Simply:
how wide?
Colour Rendering Index
Colour rendering relates to the way objects appear under a given light source. The measure is
called the colour rendering index, or CRI. A low CRI indicates than objects may appear unnatural
under the source, while a light with a high CRI rating will allow an objects colours to appear more
natural.
Binning (LED)
Binning is a way of measuring the difference between LEDs so that they are delivered to minimise
difference from one LED to the next. Macadam is often a unit used for measurement which is an
observation test observed by the human eye to distinguish the colour differences.
Colour Temperature, Kelvin Scale, K
Briefly: how red, blue and green the white light is. Films are white balanced by choosing the
correct colour-temperature source (daylight, about 5,600K; tungsten, usually 3,200K) or by filtering.
Constant current
In electronics, a constant current system is a system that can vary the voltage across an electronic
circuit to maintain a constant electric current.
Constant voltage
Constant voltage refers to the ability to fluctuate output current to maintain a set voltage. Constant
voltage can be used for applications where the workpieces do not have flat surfaces, e.g. crossed
wires, and where the resistance varies significantly, and for extremely short welds (less than 1
millisecond).
Dichroic
A vapor-deposited coating (usually on glass or metal) that reflects unwanted portions of the light
spectrum. A filter with such a coating, typically one that converts tungsten light to match daylight
sources or films.
Diffusion
A translucent material placed in front of a light to soften highlights and shadows, reduce contrast
and increase beam angle.

GLOSSARY OF LIGHTING TERMS

Driver
An LED driver is a device that manages power and controls the current flow for an LED lighting
product. LED lighting doesnt require high voltage so the driver converts the mainline current down
the voltage required by the light source.
Glare
Light reflected toward the camera from shiny or even relatively matte surfaces. In moderation, it is
one of the most useful ways to add life to drab subjects. If excessive, tame it by: moving the glaring
object, the light, or camera angle; using softer light, a polarizing camera filter (not on bare metal),
or dulling-type spray (not on bald heads).
GU10 lamp
Usually in 240V GU10s are a high intensity light source emitting a bright sparkling natural light far
superior to that of an incandescent bulb. The GU10 fits its lampholder with a twist and lock
mechanism.
Halogen
Denoting lamps and radiant heat sources using a filament surrounded by the vapour of iodine or
another halogen.
IES file
An IES file is a text file that describes the intensity of a light source at points on a spherical grid.
It provides more photorealistic lighting effects in rendered images than other types of light
distribution.
Incandescent Lamp or Light
A lamp that produces white light when electric current excites the filament. See: Tungsten
Filament.
LDT file
LDT is a light fixture, or luminaire, data file used by DIALux, a professional light planning software for
indoor and outdoor lighting. It stores lighting parameters for a luminaire, which include the number
of lamps, the light intensity, the light distribution curve, and the size of the luminaire.
Lumen
A unit of measurement of Incident light. Lumens, like lux, flux, candela, foot candles, foot lamberts,
and watt/seconds, were created by scientists and engineers to confuse artists.
LED
Light emitting diode: semiconductor that emits light when a conducting current is used.
Lux
A unit of measure of Incident Light. The video and European version of foot candles. Conversion
formula: fc x 10.8 = Lux.

GLOSSARY OF LIGHTING TERMS

MR16 lamp
The reflectors of some MR lamps have a smooth inside surface instead of facets, but they are still
called MR lamps by convention. The light source of MR lamps is a single-ended quartz halogen
filament capsule.
Transformer
An apparatus for reducing or increasing the voltage of an alternating current. Usually used for
converting 240V down to 12V in MR16 lamps.
Tungsten Filament
A lamp coil that emits light (and heat) when electricity flows through it. See: Incandescent Lamp.
Watt (w)
A measurement of power or the rate at which electrons move along a wire.

Do not connect to mains supply. Incorrect wiring will damage the LED. Only install with an
