birch. These are all common
names for one of the most recognized trees in New England,
Betula papyrifera. Even folks
who arent familiar with tree
species can usually name the
white birch, with its white bark
that up close can look like peel-

Modern uses of birch bark are

mostly decorative, but in the
past it was used for many utilitarian purposes. Native people
used the bark to make canoes,
hence one of the trees common
names. There are still a few
people who keep the art of birch
bark canoe-building alive
today, and one of the most wellknown builders is from here in
New Hampshire. The bark was
also used extensively for containers of all shapes and sizes.
The bark was shaped into a container with the sides stitched
together, or it was cut into strips
and woven into a basket.
Containers made from birch
bark were used to collect maple
sap in pre-colonial times. The

established after a large-scale
disturbance such as a fire,
clearcut, or wind event. The
small, light-weight seeds can be
blown for a fair distance, and
become established on exposed
mineral soil. It is often found in
conjunction with aspen (a.k.a.

another

more shade tolerant species

that looks like a burnt cinder.
Another name for it is cinder

medicinal tea, and is believed to
have immune-enhancing properties. It was also used to start
fires. It has been used by eastern Europeans, Russians, and
Native Americans for centuries,
and, like birch sap, is gaining
popularity with modern North
Americans.

And of course the wood of the

A good example of forest succession and the shade intolerance of birch is the Shelburne
Birches in Shelburne, New
Hampshire. The Birches are a
well-known stand of white
birch trees along Route 2.
When I lived in the Gorham
area in the 1990s, I was familiar with this patch of woods.
The birches were becoming
quite mature and were starting
to decline. Growing underneath them was a stand of
maple, spruce, fir, and other
shade tolerant trees. If forest
succession continued on its
own, the birches would have
faded from the scene and the
famous Shelburne Birches
wouldve been no more. They
would have to be called the
Shelburne Maples, or the
Shelburne Spruces, or something like that. So, in order to
perpetuate the white birches,
some patch clearcuts were put
in place in order to create the
conditions white birch need to
regenerate- openings with sunlight and exposed soil. At first
the patch cuts were colonized
by the usual raspberries and pin
cherry.
The white birch
saplings were in there, but the

other species were most visible.

But over time, the white birches
emerged and today there are
vigorous saplings and small
poletimber size trees that will
eventually develop into the
iconic large white birches the
area is named for.

Bermans Bits
Okay, I have an amazing column this week. Its great! Trust
me! This is a fantastic collection of incredible thoughts. My
ideas here are tremendous! Itll
be very, very interesting.
Believe me! It will be not boring.

So, this week I open with a multiple-choice pop quiz (oh, no!).
After reading the next two Bits,
please answer the question that
follows. (1) A conservation
biologist
at
Australias
University of New South Wales
recently said that his team was
headed to Botswana to paint
eyeballs on cows rear ends. Its
a solution to the problem of
farmers who are now forced to
kill endangered lions to keep
them away from their cows.
However, the researchers
hypothesize, since lions hunt by
stealth and tend to pass up kills
if the prey spots them, painting
on eyeballs might trick the lions
to choose other prey. [Sydney

stuff. (c) A mix is good. (d)

a Fenway Frank? That too
sounds pretty official to me. So,
which is it? If I want to enjoy an
OFFICIAL Red Sox hot dog, I
should be able to, but which
one is it??? By the way, I ran
into a major problem recently. I
had two hot dogs and buns left
but found the buns had developed a darl-green fuzzy patina.
I threw them away. I solved the
problem by buying a six pack of
buns and a four-pack of
Schonland dogs at Shawnees.

Test Question: Bit 1 is typical

of the old days where I collected and shared weird Bits from
here, there, and everywhere. Bit
2 is more personal, a look into
my ordinary (yet sometimes
strange) mind and way of seeing things. Over the past several
months, I have slipped more
from the first to the second.

that this exorbitant salary

increase was, in fact, not justified by the MRI Report. We
were told that the other large
pay increase was recommended by a committee that is
charged with providing oversight for that employees
department and then approved
by the three towns.

I believe that these actions may

constitute a fraud upon the residents of Franconia and that
this fraud was orchestrated by
the previous Chairman of the
Select Board, someone who was
denied another term by voters
earlier this year.
It is my opinion that the current
Chair of the Select Board and
one other Selectman are seeking to carry on a tradition of
playing fast and loose with
Right to Know and Open
Meeting Laws, rewarding political cronies at taxpayer expense
and acting as though they have
limited or no accountability to
the residents of our town.

I believe that this was demonstrated recently when, behind

closed doors and against the
recommendation of a study
committee, they voted to create
a new supervisory position and
then awarded it to one of their
cronies (the same person who
received a 5% raise in the last
Budget).

No open and competitive hiring

process was conducted in
regard to this job. It should
also be noted that the town
employee to whom this new
position was gifted will now be
supervising work that they are
not competent to perform themself.

Adventures in
Homesteading

Impermanence

The thing about a perfect woodpile is that it cant stay perfect

for long.

Through the spring and now the

summer, we have been - and,
really, Ryans done most of the
work this year - felling, splitting, moving, and stacking
cordwood for the coming winter. Weve piled it in a new
location this season, on the
northeastern edge of our clearing, just beyond the garden and
the root cellar. Theres more
sun and less shade, and though
theres a marginally longer
walk around the herb garden
and old apple tree to reach the
new pile (compared to our previous stacking site by the toolshed), its proving to be a good
choice thus far. Wood felled in
the spring is already cracked
and dry; more recently cut
wood is well-along in the transition from green to seasoned.
Plus, being on ever-so-slightly
higher ground than the rest of
our clearing, we have a direct
view of it from the cabin and
gardens. It looks good!

This firwood stack, as with

those of years past, is perched
atop old pallets, then protected
from the elements by a covering
of salvaged sheet metal. The

Beth
Weick

motivation in choosing this new

site comes from future plans,
when we hope to construct a
real woodshed (next year? the
year after that?). That will certainly make stacking easier, and
keep out the weather more thoroughly. In the meantime, nevertheless, its pallets and sheet
metal that were working with.

Right now, the rectangular rows

of cordwood, the log ends of
ash, oak, beech, and yellow
birch forming a pleasant mosaic
of wood tones, the precise and
sturdy posture of the wood pile;
all this is visually pleasing and
psychologically comforting.
Satisfying as it is, however,
experience assures us that such
backwoods beauty is no more
permanent than the flowers, the
warm temperatures, and the
lush green of the summer
months.

Sometime in November well

switch from our summer woodcookstove to the woodstove of
the winter, meaning that well
also transition from burning
brush wood & limb wood to
cordwood. As we get deeper
into winter, well get deeper
into the woodpile...and thus the
geometry of a perfect pile will
break down. The sheet metal
might sag as the wood supporting it is burned. A February

thaw might drip some melt

through the old fastener holes in
the metal, leaving the cordwood
below encased in ice once
freezing temperatures return.
Perhaps the wood at a rows end
will need to be used, thus a
hodge-podge selection of grade
stakes or garden markers will
find winter employment serving as the spindly columns
holding up an end of sheet
metal. For one reason or anoth-

er, the woodpiles summer perfection will decompose, piece

by piece, into slightly controlled mayhem. We know its
coming. Its okay.

Its okay, because this blatant,

obvious, overtly simple lesson
in impermanence is just the sort
of thing we love so much about
our lifestyle. These moments of
profound philosophy rooted in
our daily doings remind us to

relax, enjoy, and lighten up.

Like the buddhists sand mandala - beautiful artwork whose
destiny is to be destroyed the
moment it is completed - the
woodpile, the flower garden,
the weeds taking over the vegetables, our very lives, are brief.
The beauty is in the process, the
use in the moment. What is, is;
whats to come, has yet to
arrive.

Dear Friends, Do you ever wonder if God

is there? If He hears your prayers? If He
sees you in the midst of the millions of people on
the planet? Does He even know you exist? The
answer is YES! Joshua 1:9 Have I not commanded
you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be
terrified; do not be discouraged, for the LORD
your God will be with you wherever you go."
Romans 8:2839 And we know that in all things
God works for the good of those who love him,
who have been called according to his purpose.
For those God foreknew he also predestined to be
conformed to the image of his Son, that he might
be the first born among many brothers and
sisters. And those he predestined, he also called;
those he called, he also justified; those he
justified, he also glorified. Read the Bible. God
bless you.

Students Transform Warren Village School Playground For Wildlife__________________________________

US Fish and
and shrubs.
Wildlife
biologist
Ted
Kendziora, along with 3 of his
colleagues, drove up from
Concord to help with the project. Ted taught the students
about soil texture, water retention, composting, and how to
care for the new plants and
beds. Three high school students from East Haverhills
Oliverian School also volunteered to help with the project.
Twelfth graders Chase Thomas
and Matt Horvitz and tenth
grader Simon Wolkoff helped
with much of the heavy lifting
throughout the day.

The project began in April

when the school was chosen by
NH Audubon to receive a
$1000 Schoolyard Habitat
Exploration Grant. Soon after,
the
Grafton
County
Conservation District donated a
variety of wildlife supporting
native shrubs to the project
including red osier dogwood,
American hazelnut, shrubby
cinquefoil, ninebark, and nannyberry. Eager to assist the
children with their garden project, the Warren United
Methodist Church, whose property abuts the school playground, agreed to allow the garden beds to overflow onto
church property.

When the schools 21st CCLC

Summer Program began in July,
the students worked each day to
design the beds and choose
native NH plants that support
birds, pollinators, and other
wildlife. The students visited
local nursery JM Landscaping
to meet and choose their
favorite plants.
VanBerkum
Nursery in Deerfield, NH, a
specializer in native species,
also supplied many of the
perennials. With help from the
two nurseries and to accompany
the shrubs donated by the
Conservation District, the children chose many wildlife supporting perennials included
lowbush blueberry, yarrow,
wintergreen, bearberry, purple
coneflower, phlox, and purpleflowering raspberry.

The students work culminated

on July 20, when the youngsters, summer staff members,
