Course Description
Biology is a discipline in science that studies organisms, living things. Students will conduct laboratory
and field investigations utilizing the scientific method and are expected to make informed decisions
using critical thinking and problem solving.

Students are expected to participate in their biology classes. Students earn participation points each
day they are in attendance.
Homework
Homework is assigned on a regular basis. The assignments offer students an opportunity to explore
biological concepts that have been or will be presented in class. Students who do not submit
homework as scheduled will need to report to Homework Tutorials after school to complete it.
Tutorials
Tutorials are held on Thursdays from 2:45 – 4:00 pm. Tutorials provide additional support to advance
student achievement and growth. Students receive notifications of their scheduled tutorials.
Supplies
All students are required to bring a backpack daily to school. In addition, students will be required to
maintain scientific notebooks that will be provided for them. Lastly, students will need to supply their
own pens, pencils and other supplies as deemed appropriate by their teachers.
Attendance
Maintaining good attendance in the ninth grade is a top priority. When students miss school, they miss
vital instruction. Tutorials and make up work do not replace any classroom time missed. If a student
skips a class, that counts as an absence. After the second absence, in a class, a parent contact will be
made by the teacher. After the third absence, a parent conference is required with an administrator
and the teacher.
*The order of topics and assessment dates may be changed to better meet the needs of students.
*Additional assignments such as, but not limited to, lab reports and a science fair project will be
required for GT/Pre-AP students.
Nine weeks’ grades are calculated using the
percentages below.
