Good morning everyone and a very special good morning to the bright, young faces

here, on whom so many have pinned their aspirations. Many institutions and colleges
invite me to deliver lectures, conduct workshops, train the teachers, etc., and normally, I
do not carry any papers with me. But today, this occasion being very important, I
thought I should not miss out any minor point to the assembled young engineers here
and hence I have the script with me.
Thank you, Dr. Anand, Principal, RGIT for inviting me to join you all on this special day. I
should also thank my colleague Mr. Srinivas who suggested my name for this days
Guest of Honour and Associate Prof. Somashekar who interacted with me.
Let me first extend my heartiest congratulations to these young boys and girls who
have successfully passed out the entrance test in getting the engineering seats in this
prestigious institution. So, let us put our hands together to congratulate them.
The word engineer is derived from the Latin words ingeniare ("to
and ingenium ("cleverness") and this shows that you are all clever.

devise")

With a simple example, let us see how the engineers think cleverly. You have a glass
half filled with water. How does a pessimist see the glass? The pessimist sees the glass
as half empty. And how about an optimist? The optimist sees the glass as half full. And
the engineer? He says that the glass is double the size of water it is containing and had
it been half its size, the glass would be full with water.
The engineer approaches the world by asking two questions: What is wrong and, how
can we fix it?; and What is right, and how can we do better?; In other words, how do
we apply knowledge to solve real world problems?
Arise to the challenges of the day and dedicate yourself to the building of strong India. I
have high hopes from all of you and I call upon you to lead the way in shaping our
countrys future. With you as bright engineers, we need not worry about a challenging
tomorrow but rather we can be confident that we are better-placed to a secure
tomorrow.
Thank you very much.
