Goal: Students will practice the target grammar (present perfect) through listening,
writing and speaking activities.

We have talked about the form of present perfect as well as

past participles in previous lessons. SS will practice the
form through the following activity.

Present Perfect Bingo (Worksheet available to download)

Rule: SS will be given a 4X4 bingo sheet, on which was
written phrases like have never smoked before, have
been to California and have watched a Broadway show.
SS will mingle and ask each other questions in form of
Have you ever? For example, Have you ever smoked
before? They will cross out the phrase once they get an
affirmative answer. The first 3 person who cross out 4
phrases in a straight line win.

1.1 Pre-Stage:
Introduce when do we use the present perfect
(T writes example sentences on the board, and has students
tell the rules.)

An action that started in the past and is still unfinished

today. (An unfinished action)
1. She has lived on 120th street since 2010. (She still
lives on 120th street.)
2. I havent finished my homework. (The homework is
still unfinished.)

An action that happened sometime in the past but we

dont know the exact time. (A finished action, but we
dont know the exact time)

1.2. During Stage: Make contrast with the simple past.

T has students read paragraph 1 on page 84.
Underline sentences in simple past tense and present
perfect tense. Did you find any differences between these
two tenses?
T writes these on the board as SS read:
1. In 2004, an energy company discovered natural gas.
2. Many people have found new jobs.
Here are two sentences I took from the text. We use simple
past tense to talk about a finished action at a definite time
in the past. Why do we use present perfect in sentence 2?
(We dont know the exact time. We only know it has
happened.)
Ask students Which countries have you been to? and
When did you go there? to distinguish the difference.
T has SS do practice 3 on page 163
Lets try something and see if you can tell when to use
present perfect and when to use simple past. Please turn to
page 163 and look at practice 3. Compare your answers
with your partner once finished.
T elicits answers, and have SS explain why.
Please read the whole sentence, and try telling us why.
T has SS do listening on page 85.
Now were gonna listen to an interview of an engineer
from a gas company. Please read the 4 questions in Q8 first.
Please pay attention to the tenses as you listen.
T elicits answers, and has SS explain why. Move on to Q9.
Did you notice that the interview is in simple past and
present perfect tense? I want you to take a look at Q9.
There are 8 incomplete sentences taken from the listening,
and your job is to put them into complete sentences.
T plays the audio again for final check / Ask 1 volunteer
from each group to write 2 complete sentences on the board.

1.3 Post-Stage: Speaking
Look at Question 12 on your book. There are 6 topics.
Now work in pairs, see if you can ask and answer questions
on these topics using the present perfect and simple past.
Danning and I will give you an example.
For example: languages.
Me: Danning, have you learned Arabic?
D: No, I havent. But I study English.
Me: Really? How long have you studied it?
D: For about 10 years.
(Topics include: traveling experience, languages, work,
family, hobbies, and movies.)
