Introduction

lassroom response system (CRS) is an innovation in communication

technology capable of transforming student engagement, learning and
teaching in large classes by facilitating classroom management tasks.
CRS first came to be introduced in Stanford University, USA in the year 1966 which was
expensive and difficult to use. In 1985, a much less expensive prototype was tested and
well received by the students and teachers at Christopher Newport University, USA.
Education at all levels saw a paradigm shift when extensive use of CRS began in 2003.
Today, numerous secondary schools, colleges, universities and especially B-Schools use
this tool worldwide. And 'Pulse', is our sincere and passionate attempt in making India see
the same paradigm shift in education that the world has seen.

How does it work?

Technically, CRS is a set of hardware and software that works in a simple manner where:
A teacher poses a question to his or her students via an overhead or computer
projector.
Each student submits an answer to the question using a handheld transmitter
(responder) that beams a radio-frequency signal to a receiver attached to the
teacher's computer.

Software, which is a simple

this case, on the teacher's
computer collects the students'
answers and produces a bar
chart which can be saved for
future references, showing how
many students chose each of
the answer choices.

The teacher makes on the

fly instructional choices in
response to the bar chart by, for
example, leading students in a
discussion of the merits of each
answer choice or asking
students to discuss the question
in small groups.

Key Benefits

Maintains students' attention during a lecture and encourages participation from each
and every student in the class.
Creates a safe place for shy and unsure students to participate in class.
Makes it easy for teachers to gauge the level to which the students have done their
homework: For example, posing questions on pre-reading to the whole class and
gathering their responses.
Enables faculty to fine-tune their instructions in real time and give instant feedbacks
upon identification of misconceptions.
Increases engagement and knowledge retention in students irrespective of class size.
Brings down tendency in students to answer based on crowd psychology.
Enables initiation of student group discussions helping in peer learning.

There are much more benefits to using a CRS, which the teachers across the world are discovering
everyday by putting in creativity.

Quotes
Putting up your hand in class is pretty complex thing, kind of dangerous, socially and
academically. But everyone is willing to give anonymous answers. Everyone is equally involved
and the answers are honest. And fast.
Victor Edmonds, Educational Technology Services, University of California at Berkeley
Sometimes students will have questions that as an instructor you might not have
thought of. And I use them the next day in class by just bouncing them back to the students.
Instead of explaining to them what the answer to the question is, I just pose their question [to the
class using a CRS]. I've had some students come to me at the end of the lecture saying, 'Professor
Mazur, that question you asked me, that was exactly the question I had.' And I look at the student
and say, 'That was your question!'
Eric Mazur, Professor Physics at Harvard University
"Overall I think CRS increased student satisfaction and participation in the course. It
also allowed me instant feedback on student comprehension. They also seem to engage
students more fully in a large lecture course. They can also stimulate discussion in a class where
that does not occur often."
- Faculty user at Wisconsin University
