PROPOSED TITLE OF THE RESEARCH PROPOSAL/PROJECT

Teaching and Learning

of Storytelling in Enhancing Language Proficiency

Among The Year 3 Pupils of SJK (TAMIL) RRI, Sungai Buloh.

2. INTRODUCTION
Research Method In Language Learning is important in getting the findings of the
Teaching and Learning field. One of the methods of enhancing language is via storytelling. Children love stories as they make interesting images in the minds when
listening to a story. Story telling is one of the best methods of teaching, the teacher can
employ in any lesson presentation.
Storytelling is a unique way for students to develop an understanding, respect and
appreciation for other cultures, and can promote a positive attitude to people from
different lands, races and religions.
Therefore, the title that I have chosen for this research is Teaching and Learning of
Storytelling in Enhancing Language Proficiency Among The Year 3 Pupils of
SJK (TAMIL) RRI, Sungai Buloh.

From the research and observation, I found out that students have an innate love of
stories as stories create magic and a sense of wonder at the world. Stories also teach
us about life, ourselves and others.
As a Language Teachers of Year Three, I like to know "why" and what make the pupils
to be interested in stories besides introducing any new skill or curriculum component,
and

rightly so. As a full-time teacher I was astounded when I incorporated storytelling into
my curriculum. Undoubtedly, working up tales and performing them took time, but the
benefits
affected the reading, writing, speaking and understanding of my students in so many
ways, I felt it was well worth the time. Even in a short visit, I can see students' increased
confidence and facility with language because of storytelling.

3. OBJECTIVES OF THE RESEARCH PROPOSED/ PROJECT

There are several objectives of that have been formulated to execute this study which
is:I.

To explore English primary school teachers perception/ interpretation about

the use of storytelling as an educational tool.

ii.

To explore the extent to which storytelling is being used in teaching students

to improve their speaking skill, vocabulary, comprehension skills, and
composition

iii.

To investigate the influence of storytelling in teaching students and feedback

from the students.

iv.

To encourage the students to speak in English Language in their daily life.

v.

Students will develop and enhance vocabulary through listening.

4. THE PROBLEM STATEMENT

As the statement of Problem, the students as audience are unable to conceptualize the
facts

from

teachers

note

until

they

experience

the

scenario.

Storytelling

technique/method will help students to conceptualizing facts with the techniques of

transfer of experiences from the teacher to students. Stories are effective as
educational tools because they are believable, rememberable, and entertaining. Stories
help information easy to be remembered because they involve us in the actions and
intentions of the characters. Story develops the landscape of action and the landscape
of consciousness - the element of human intention.

5. LITERATURE REVIEW
Storytelling has more benefits as an effective method of instruction, because it involves
many mediums of communication for example use of gestures, song and dance. It also
moulds characters and provides enjoyment. Stories broadens the knowledge of the

children and the cultural beliefs and activities. It also establishes good relationships
among pupils and their teacher.
This method researchers involved in the educational process gain insights into
storytelling and seek to improve it over time. It also encourages further research, which
in turn, may lead to the enrichment of the field of storytelling in general and language
teaching and learning in particular. It helps teachers to better understand the issue and
integrate storytelling into their classroom routine. The information gathered in this study
will aid proponents of storytelling in better understanding the educational effects of their
craft. As a result of this study and of other studies, practitioners of storytelling will be
welcome in schools not only as entertainers, but also as partners in the educational
Process.
Hopefully, this method answers a few questions and create awareness on the
importance of observation. The researcher hopes that this study can be used as a guide
and assist teachers of ESL to overcome problems related to teaching of vocabulary,
writing and speaking. Thus, the researcher hopes that the materials, models, methods,
and strategies can improve the effectiveness of teaching and learning in the classroom.

learners.

The reason to choose Story Telling in the classroom is one of the ways in uprising in
learning English. The teacher is expected to choose different ways for narration which
will be chosen randomly.

The instruments that will be used in this research ae basically observation forms,
questionnaire forms, pre-test, post-test, interview forms and field notes to elicit
information. The respondents will fill the task sheet / survey form to enable the
researcher obtain their profile and information on their background as well as to gather
information on their attitude towards learning English. Whatever been observed during
teaching and learning, will be recorded. The teacher who is also researcher will record
the observation during the teaching and learning process in the classroom and to
answer a self-administered questionnaire. It is to elicit information on the teaching
method used by the teacher and information regarding pupils attitude and behavior
towards the method used. Students will be tested too to determine the pupils word
knowledge in relation to the lesson designed for this research.

Sharing tacit knowledge between teachers and students by using storytelling

will help students to understand more and later will improve the process of
teaching and learning.

iii)

The student can be motivated by using storytelling.

8. THE EXPECTED RESEARCH/ PROJECT OUTCOME OR CONTRIBUTION OF
