ARTS TRAIL 2016
What is SHAF?
The South Hams Arts Forum (SHAF) is an
active association of artists and craftspeople
from across the region. Over the past
decade, SHAF has staged a number of Arts
Trails and exhibitions in the South Hams.
Rather than being a high-powered
organisation, SHAF comprises a group of
talented and enthusiastic individuals and
always welcomes new members, whether
they are experienced or new artists. Visit

Yearly Present Maker Christmas Exhibition (photo 2015)
Every year, SHAF members have the

opportunity to take part in a number of
exhibitions, notably Contemporary Passions
in the spring, a December Christmas event
(Present Maker)both held in Harbour
House Gallery, Kingsbridgeand, of course,
The Arts Trail in October.
Membership of SHAF includes a number of

regular meetings, talks and demonstrations,
as well as social gatherings at which
members may meet and network with likeminded artists. Most importantly, each
member artist is invited to enter a prole,
with images, on the SHAF website Gallery
which serves as a useful promotional outlet.

Welcome to
the Arts Trail 2016
This year the SHAF Arts Trail runs from
October 15th to October 23rd and features
a total of 51 artists in 18 venues across the
South Hams.
SHAF membership is extremely diverse, so
while some artists create in purpose-built
studios, others produce their work at the
kitchen table. Consequently, the Arts Trail will
lead visitors to artists working in their home
studios and to others exhibiting in galleries
and exhibition halls.
At each venue, visitors will nd artists happy to
discuss their art-form, explain the processes
involved and provide the opportunity to view,
appreciate and buy unique pieces of work.
Following the Arts Trail also enables visitors
to explore the glorious South Hams as they
map their route and discover more and more
venues.

Present Maker 2016 - Christmas Exhibition
Present Maker is a not-to-be-missed exhibition with
a Christmas theme. It will take place from the 29th of
November to the 11th of December at Harbour House
Gallery, Kingsbridge.
Present Maker features a variety of both 3-D and 2-D
art pieces specially selected to make the most original
Christmas gifts.
Contemporary Passions 2016

Contemporary Passions is one of our main exhibitions held at Harbour House Gallery, Kingsbridge,
each year featuring the latest work and current passions of a number of
SHAF members.
The 2016 exhibition was
a great success, featuring an impressive amount
of talent and welcoming a
great many visitors to the
Gallery at Harbour House
last September.

All works will be for sale and visitors will also have
an opportunity to meet the artists, some of whom will be
on-site throughout the exhibition.
Visitors to Present Maker will discover a variety of unique
gifts, from paintings to prints, unusual jewellery from 4
different makers, origami art, textiles from 3 different
artists and exquisite stained glass lamps.
Two evenings, two artists

One evening, one curator
During the past year, SHAF members enjoyed two
evenings with two artists.
Martin Brooks from the University of
Plymouth gave a stunning demonstration of his method of portraiture
in the summer of 2015, using SHAF
member A. Ventura as his model.
And Ian Carr took his audience from
conception to (almost) nished abstract painting in November, 2015.
Recently, in September,
2016, SHAF members
were also treated to a
lively and informative
talk by Elaine Dye, curator of the Byre Gallery in
Cornwall.
