6th Grade Mathematics Common Core Syllabus

Mathematics is not a spectator sport. You must do mathematics to learn mathematics!

Course Description: The sixth grade mathematics course focuses on 1) algebraexpressions and
equations, 2) geometry, 3) number and quantityratios and proportional relationships and number
system, and 4) statistics and probability. Students will develop understanding of these four domains as a
tool for thinking and communicating across all the strands of mathematics.
Course Goals:
100% of students will demonstrate progress in mathematical achievement on the STAR postassessment in January 2017.
100% of students will earn an 80% on every exit ticket, quiz, and test.
100% of students will receive a meets or exceeds on the Georgia Milestones Assessment.
Course Themes:
All of the units presented below correspond to one or more of the following course themes:
Number System Fluency
Rates, Ratios and Proportional Reasoning
Algebraic Expressions
One-Step Equations and Inequalities
Area, Volume, and Surface Area
Statistics
Rational Explorations: Numbers and Their Opposites

Course Expectations:
Students are expected to follow the core values as well as abide by all school rules while in class. Should
there be any question to school rules and expectations, please refer to your student handbook. Students
are expected to follow all classroom culture expectations.
Grades:
A = 90-100%

B = 80 89%

C = 70 79%

Grades below a C: Any work that does not demonstrate standard mastery of at least 70% does not get a
passing grade. Students who earn below a C in a course will earn an F.
Grade Breakdown:
Homework: 10%
In order to practice concepts just learned, students will receive homework at least two to three times per
week, and should take an average of 20-30 minutes to complete. Neat, legible, complete and accurate
homework will be expected in order for homework to receive full credit. If homework is incomplete or
not legible, students will not receive full credit. This grade documents students completion of nightly
homework assignments. Homework grades will be calculated using the following system:
Homework checks: At the beginning of class, the teacher checks that homework is completed
according to given instructions. Pencil only. Homework may or may not be collected.
Late homework: Homework that is turned in at the end of the day which it is due will receive
a grade of 80%. Homework turned in the next day will receive 50%. Missing homework will
receive a 0.
Projects: 20%
Projects will be given per unit at least one week in advance of the due date. The focus of projects is to
allow students demonstrate mastery of a standard creatively and collaboratively. Projects are also used to
broaden students' mathematical literacy by exposing them to mathematical concepts that may not be a part
of the sixth grade standard, such as fibonacci numbers, pi, mathematicians in history, et cetera.

Quizzes: 20%

These grades assess skill and content knowledge development leading up to summative assessments, and
may be also referred to as formative assessments. Formative assessments are collected in class, graded
within 4 days, and returned. These may include (but are not limited to) weekly quizzes on unit standards,
exit tickets, and selected homework assignments.
Tests: 25%
These assessments are designed to measure student mastery of content knowledge and skills at the end of
a major unit.
Classwork: 25%
The classwork grade is calculated through the completion of assignments completed in class.
Makeup Work Policy:
Students that miss a day of class are expected to complete both the class work and the homework from
that day. It is the students responsibility to determine the missing work and turn it in. Please contact
your teacher before or after class to receive any missing assignments. The student is responsible for
setting a plan in place to complete & turn in the work. If a student misses a quiz or test, the student must
complete the assessment before or after school as soon as possible.
Supplies:
Students should bring the following supplies to class every day:
Multiple Sharpened No. 2 Pencils
Lined Paper
Homework due that day
Previous Day's Guided Notes
STUDENTS WILL BE NOTIFIED IN ADVANCE WHEN THEY NEED ANY SUPPLIES OTHER
THAN THE ONES LISTED ABOVE.
A few Classroom Culture Pieces
Warm-Up at the start of each class, reviews previous material, gets the mind in math mode and helps us
set a strong tone for our class.
Collaboration a chance to meld the minds and work with purpose to make sense of our world with
math
Independent Work- is for YOU to perfect your practice and as such, the expectation will always be that
you work alone, quietly and do your best with a positive attitude; questions will be answered by the
teacher only to respect others work time and focus
Awards there are monthly nominations for students that exceptionally model the RMS Wildcat Way,
demonstrate mastery on assessments, and show perseverance and hard work in the classroom; there are
both grade level and in-class awards
Presentations in small groups or individually, youll be asked to communicate your results from a
project or problem to the class

This syllabus is a general outline of the course and is subject to modification.

BINDER.
