Just as alignment is essential to long term business success, individual course alignment
is critical to progressive student learning. X100 learning outcomes are linked to the
Kelley School of Business learning goals. The Kelley learning goals are listed on an
appendix as the last two pages to the syllabus. The linkage of each X100 learning

X100 is designed to create an awareness of practical, conceptual & connected
fundamentals of business, creating an understanding of the interrelated & increasingly
complex global world of business & the responsibility each student has to society & the
economy. This Class Is Designed For Everyone Who Is Part Of The World
Economic System! That is Anyone Who Makes, Spends, or Invests Money!
X100 has two primary focuses. First, students are taught the conceptual historical
relevance, structure, & design of business & the economy as defined in introduction
textbooks. Second, (the nucleus of the course design) is teaching students the factors &
methods that will allow them to achieve celebrated future results. In the fast paced
evolving global economy, students must be trained to focus on, plan for, & create the
future. The world in which students will compete, 2025 & beyond, will be increasingly
complex, including: increasing growth opportunities in developing countries, the rate of
market changes will be exponential (time frames will be condensed), an increased
number of competitors, increased innovation & creativity, & moving from a world of
defined controls to collaboration with all stakeholders.
This course is useful to any occupation or person. It is especially valuable as a
foundation for students to become inspired, excited, & ignited about business as a

Be passionate about the organizations products & markets. Those with

Think of every dollar spent as an investment to be optimized, not as a cost
to be minimized.
Executive intelligence consists of three factors: 1) superior intellect (to
deal with the increasing complexity), 2) understanding how others receive
communications (to achieve alignment), & 3) recognizing/accepting
reality, both personal & organizational.
Proactive decisions deliver superior results compared to reactive
decisions. Reactivity makes an individual a subordinate to each issue that
arises & procrastination eventually overwhelms.

In a rapid paced environment, business minds must be trained to focus on

crisp, to the point communications.
The productive business mind should be trained to: 1) respond to a
question, 2) state why the response was
given, & identify the impact.

X100 will provide an overview from the point of view of a CEO/President
regarding basic business concepts including: leadership; the importance of the human
equation in business; marketing; innovation; production & operations management;
technology; information systems; accounting & finance; the stock market; & an
overview of the current business environment, including major economic challenges
posed by both change in general & the growing global macro-economic community.
The ENGAGEMENT (Lecture) SCHEDULE is more specific regarding the range of topics
to be discussed in the course. The schedule will be followed strictly (except for weather
or other emergencies) & should be your guide for class & exam readiness. If & when
schedule changes are made, the changes will be announced in class, by e-mail & posted
through Canvas. Students must check
e-mail & Canvas routinely, if changes are
posted & students miss the changes that does not alleviate students from the
responsibly described in the posting.
Knowledge will be assessed utilizing two methods:
4 Exams will test the knowledge of students presented in the textbook & in
the Monday & Wednesday engagements.
Knowledge/understanding will be assessed in 4 areas.
How students can identify the basic roles & functions of the business
disciplines of marketing, supply chain, finance,
accounting, strategy, information, innovation, & human resources in an
increasingly global business economy & solve problems presented.
How students identify the leadership skills to attain great results.
How students can solve business problems.
How students can articulate how technology & globalization will impact future
There will be four (4) non-cumulative exams, as indicated in the ENGAGEMENT
SCHEDULE. Exams 1 & 2 will consist of 55 multiple choice questions. Exams 3 & 4 will
consist of 60 multiple choice questions. Each right answer is worth 4 points toward a
students final course grade, of 1000 points. (55 question exams are worth 220 points & 60
question exams are worth 240 points)
Exam 4 is finals week, Wednesday 12/14/2016 at 12:30 to 1:45 PM in HH 1000.

Subject matter for exams will include engagement slides, e-textbook material, & other class
discussions. Approximately 80% of exam questions will come from the engagement slides
& the e-textbook. The other 20% will come from class discussion.

Make-up exams will be given in emergency situations. Valid reasons for make-up
exams include:
Documented Illnesses
Documented Family Emergencies
Family Related Deaths
Religious Observances
Representing University
Exam at same time

The make-up request must have detailed documentation. Doctors notes must include
details of the absence including dates & explanations of why the student was unable to
attend exam. It is the students responsibility to notify Moe prior to exam time that they
will miss the exam. It is the students responsibility to include an explanation for the miss in
writing. Failure to make-up an exam within one week will result in a zero score, unless
approved by Moe.
Portions of this course may be subject to electronic proctoring. Video cameras may be used
to monitor the room during student assessment activities, including but not limited to,
exams, tests, and quizzes. Video recordings may be used to investigate or support
disciplinary action. All access to and use of video equipment and recordings will follow
applicable IU policies.

In X100 we do not do any individual grade rounding. As a general practice we will

Grades are not curved & are based solely on the above %s. There will be
no further rounding. Students should not contact us requesting a higher
grade. We know students all feel they work hard, but X100 grades are like
the real world & based on results not effort. Also, if we would round the
grade for one student we would have to round the grades for every other
student to be fair.
Exam grades are normally posted on Canvas within 96 hours after the exam. Any Canvas
grade postings believed to be inaccurate must be contested within 10 days of posting.
If students wish to check which questions they may have answered incorrectly on a test,
tests will be available for your review for 14 days after the scheduled date of the test.

5 times during the semester, attendance will be randomly taken. Each time up to 4 times, a
student is in attendance 20 points (up to a max of 80 points) will be added to their final
course points. Attendance is taken via completing a scantron in class.
Credit will be given to students who miss for the following reasons:
Documented Illnesses
Documented Family Emergencies
Family Related Deaths
Religious Observances
Representing University
Exam at same time

Students wanting to challenge their attendance scores, Contact Moe, & find their names on
filed scantrons. Only one scantron can be turned in for each student. Any student
attempting to turn in 2 scnatrons will have both scnatrons discarded & the points not
Responsibility & Accountability Bonus:
X100 teaches both responsibility & accountability as well as project management skills.
To facilitate project management awareness & skills, X100 sections must establish a
plan, organize efforts, establish responsibilities, become accountable, & monitor
progress for face & body painting for sporting events for X100 in total. In this project
students learn to become responsible & accountable to something greater than selfinterest. Students who become accountable & responsible to paint to a Level 5
definition & attend a sporting event will earn 10 bonus points.
If a student adds IU, Indiana, Hoosiers, a player, or coachs name to their painting
scheme & get any of those words prominently displayed on the jumbo-tron, 10
additional points will be added to their final grade.
A Level 5 fan requires the complete coverage of any of the following body
parts: face, arms, chest, midriff, or legs and IU related words; such as a
players name, the coachs name, Hoosiers, IU, or Indiana.
Body parts with just words painted on them without being completely
covered, will not receive the bonus credit.
Grade Challenges
Any challenge to the R&A Bonus, Exam #1, 2, or 3 & class attendance must be
completed during the normal engagement time of 11:15 AM on Monday 12/5.
After that date the only grade that can be challenged is Exam 4.

Violation of the code of ethics is a serious violation in X100. Any violation of the Kelley
School of business student code of conduct while a student in X100 will result in an
action being taken up to and including course failure. Any suspected violations even if
no discipline action is taken will be reported to the office of student ethics & added to

the students IU record. Please make sure that all work is the students own, tests are to
be taken without assistance of notes or electronic devices, words in term papers are the
students own, & not taken from another student or copied from a published materials
or reports.
To avoid suspicion,

Electronic devices are not to be out of backpacks, purses, of pockets during

exams. Should a student require a translation device during the exam or a
calculator please sit in the front row & they should raise their hand to request
to use the device each time they desire to use.
Caps are to be turned around backwards during exams so eyes can be
No talking in the exam room, except to Moe or proctors, after the exams have
been handed out until the last exam is turn in.
The proctors have the right to request students to roll up their sleeves or pull
up knee length shorts during the exam or upon exit from the classroom.

Please Note:
Moe is normally only on campus on Mondays through Wednesday. The best way to
communicate with him is through e-mail or in person before or after class, or during
office hours. If a student needs to speak to him personally outside of posted office
hours, e-mail him with a suggested time. Should students choose to e-mail, make sure
to include X100 in the e-mail subject to make sure it is not deleted as spam. Likewise,
somewhere in the e-mail the students X100 section color, course number, or time of
section should be included.

E-mails to Moe should be sent to his IU e-mail address through

Outlook Web Access.

The Method to the X100 Madness!
2025 & Beyond Moe will provide a vision of the time frame 2025 &
beyond. He will utilize this future vision to frame the challenges the
students generation will face, the organization design to meet these
challenges, & the leadership qualities to lead competitive organizations
Asking a selected student a question elevates the level of attentiveness
& helps ease student fear of speaking in groups.
Attendance points (20 points 4 times a semester80 total)students
learn more when attending & listening reward students for being
accountable & responsible to be in class the real world rewards for
accepting accountability and responsibility & achieving results. Great
results start with responsible & accountable students. (8% of course
grade)students trying but struggling with the classwill have
attendance taken into account for final grade.
Books reviews the text cannot cover all the important knowledge to
business successmany authors of non-text books have great thoughts &
insight to share. As Terry Hoeppner, former football coach of the IU
Hoosiers, said your future is shaped by the books you read & the
people you know, these reviews help shape student futures.
CEO for the Day Students will be selected randomly in each class section
to be CEO for a given day. These selected CEOs will lead the class
discussion of current events on their assigned day and will be go to person
to answer questions when the class does not volunteer answers. In the

real world the CEO gets put on the spot when others do not accept their
responsibility & accountability. It also helps ease the fear of speaking in
CEO presentation/visit bring real world into classroommore than Moes
viewsviews of proven economic value adding CEOs.
CEO Think Like a Successful CEO X100 covers all topics successful
CEOs must understand and be able to apply. It is one of the few classes
offered that is covers a wide range of conceptual topics that lends itself to
cover application of conceptual theory.
Current events link what is going on in the world around to the
engagement materialhigh results CEOs look outward.

knowledge is more effectively conveyed by engaging and challenging

request for a recommendation letter must be submitted at least 3 weeks
prior to the date due.
