The 24th Annual Hills Garlic Festival will take place Sunday, September
11 at Centennial Park in New Denver.
Admission $5 or $4 advanced tickets

event will feature 160 vendors selling: organic garlic, garlic wreaths,
products and snacks; fresh organic
produce; plants and plant products;
local crafts of art, jewellery, wood,
flutes, furniture, pottery, textiles,
rocks; soaps, lotions and herbal remedies and great food. As well as live
entertainment and childrens entertainment all day.
The Garlic Festival is a local community fundraiser put on by local
volunteers through the Hills Recreation Society (a nonprofit society).
Over the years it has become one
of the highlights of the Hills/New
Denver/Silverton community and
has raised money to provide recreation facilities and services for the
area including basketball/tennis
courts, yoga classes, childrens recreation programs and local crosscountry ski trails.
What started as a small gathering of friends who decided to have
a garlic themed potluck supper in
Hills Community park. By 2003,

the Garlic Festival had outgrown
its home and was moved to Centennial Park in New Denver.
Vendors from all over the Kootenays, the BC Interior and farther
afield gather to sell the bounty of
their harvests: vegetables, herbs,
arts and crafts and, of course, GARLIC! The festival attracts about 6000
people of all ages with lively music,
great food, childrens entertainment
and old fashioned community fun.
Stop by the Hills Recreation Society booth and meet our volunteers.

several baskets filled with samples
of the fabulous items available from

Last MarketFest!
MarketFest is back for the last time this

year, on Baker Street in Nelson Friday, August
26 starting at 6 pm, until 10:30 pm. This is a
rain or shine event but with luck the weather
will be beautiful, the sun will shine and the
music will fill the streets. The musical lineup
will include many wonderful acts including
Alpine Conspiracy, Red Eyed Soul, Brian
Rosen and the WhatNow, Erica Dee, Jon Burden and more. With the Savoy Hotel taking

Falls Street Stage this year.
The July MarketFest event was a huge hit
and was one of the biggest and best attended
MarketFest celebrations in all of 10 years
that MarketFest has been running said Jesse
R. Woodward, EcoSocietys Markets director. Thousands and thousands of people
come out to take in and enjoy these wonderful annual street parties which I think really
strengthens and supports the local community, year after year, here in the Kootenays.

Selkirk Colleges Rural Pre-Medicine Program Joins UBCs
Healthcare Travelling Roadshow
This spring representatives from the
Rural Pre-Medicine program at Selkirk
College took to the road with UBCs
Northern Medical Program on their
Healthcare Travelling Roadshow.
The roadshow, which began in 2010
and is led by Dr. Sean Maurice, a
senior laboratory instructor with the
Northern Medical Program at UNBC,
travels to rural communities for a
week each summer showcasing a
diverse range of healthcare career
options available to rural high school
students. For the first time, the
Roadshow travelled to the southern
half of BC to host a tour through
Princeton, Merritt and Keremeos.
The Healthcare Travelling Roadshow
is an initiative designed to inspire
high school kids to consider careers in
healthcare. It allows students already
training in various fields to connect
directly with youth in rural areas and
share the passion they have for their
chosen field, says Elizabeth Lund,

Coordinator of the Selkirk College
Rural Pre-Medicine Program.
With a trade-show atmosphere,
a group of healthcare students
from BC universities and colleges
presented to small groups of local
high school students and offered
hands-on activities, such as learning
to take blood-pressure, trying out
occupational therapy equipment,
or reading an x-ray. The group
showcased a range of career options
from speech pathology to medicine,
midwifery, and more.
A natural fit for the Roadshow,
Selkirks Rural Pre-Medicine program,
the first of its kind in Canada,
encourages and enables rural and
Aboriginal students to pursue careers
in health care and prepares them to
apply to both medical schools and
other healthcare professional schools.
Rural Pre-Medicine looks forward to

joining with the UBC Northern and
Southern Medical Programs again
next year to connect at a grass roots
level with BCs often-overlooked rural
and Aboriginal youth. Plans are in the
works for the Health Care Travelling
Roadshow to come to the KootenayBoundary region in 2017.

in our local communities throughout

patrons are starting to see light at the end of the tunnel
now that weve set our opening date, said Marty Benson, Recreation Manager for the NDCC. This has really
been a typical renovation project so far. Weve uncovered unexpected damage where we didnt know it existed
and weve been pleasantly surprised in other areas of the
building where the structure is still in excellent condition
after 40 years of use.

Weve spent so long demolishing and reconstructing,

said Benson. By following a construction management
model for the project, Benson says
the RDCK has been
able to hire largely
local tradespeople
who have been
adaptable to meeting tight timelines
and completing discrete sections of the
project at a set cost.
All work within the original project scope is still on
budget with an expected total cost of $5.825 million. Any
money remaining in the projects $126,000 contingency
fund will go toward repairing the cardio room, estimated
to cost $175,000.
A detailed description of construction zone activities
and expected disruptions to service as a result is available
on the RDCK website and has been posted at the NDCC.
