FLEISCHMANNS RED LETTER NAMES
Fleischmanns Red Letter Names from
the Greater Fleischmanns Museum of Memories
In January of 1969, a really big celebrity visited Fleischmanns.
Star of stage and screen, he made quite an impression. The Catskill Mountain News account of his visit reports that he stayed at
the Northland Motel, and
visited Belleayre Ski Center. The News also reported that he was scared of
the crowds at Belleayre.
He also spent time up at
the Reynolds Farm in Halcott.
This visitor was none other
than Mr. Jiggs, pictured here on a snowmobile at the house on
the corner of Main Street and Wagner Avenue. He and his handler, Ron Winters, worked together for some 30 years, appearing
on TV and doing his 'human chimp' act for many conventions and
fairs. Winters taught him to roller skate, mix cocktails, light and
smoke cigarettes. He apparently made quite a hit with youngsters in Fleischmanns and Halcott; reportedly later on Saturday
he had a drink at the Northland.
(The Museum wishes to thank Tom Shamro for his donation of
this material.)

Greater Fleischmanns Museum of
Memories in Need of Volunteers
One of our more important attractions is the Museum of Memories. During the summer months it is
open Thursday through Saturday. The Museum is completely managed and run by volunteers. Peggy Kearney says “one
of the most interesting things
about being at the Museum is
hearing visitors stories of how they know Fleischmanns.” Here’s your opportunity to be a part of
Fleischmanns ‘oral history.’ Volunteer to man the
Museum. Peggy will tell you all you need to know to
open and greet visitors. Call her for more information and to volunteer at 254-5311.

Skene Memorial Library
Summer Kid Programs
Children attended two Skene activity programs for children aged 5-12 last week. The first on Wednesday was
dedicated to circus arts; attendees
learned to juggle with scarves and juggling balls, got to try their hand at walking
on stilts, riding a unicycle and writing,
telling and performing magical tales.
Over 10 children attended and as the
pictures show they were enthralled by
their new skills. On Friday an intimate
group explored the art of writing fairy tales.
The next program is to be held at 10:30am on Friday
August 26th at Skene and it is a clay modeling workshop. Ways to use Fimo clay will be explored. See you
there!

Great Catskill Mountain BBQ
Comes to Fleischmanns August 27th
Expect to see activity in Wagner Avenue Park on Friday, August 26th as
competitors in the first ever Catskills sanctioned Kansas City Barbeque
Society event arrive and fire up their grills. Judges will be on hand on Satth
urday, August 27 and will begin deliberations at noon in order to select the best in each of the following categories;
chicken, ribs, pork, and brisket . There will be professional as well as backyard competitors in separate competitions
and a show down between the Fleischmanns, Margaretville, Andes and Arkville Fire Departments for the best BBQ
chicken.
Although attendees other than judges will not be invited to taste the BBQ entries, plenty of food concessions will be on
hand and in the park for your dining pleasure. They include Peekamoose, Hungry Traveler, Off the Hook Food Truck,
Woods’ BBQ, La Ruta de Sol, Black Hart BBQ, The Meadow Golf Center and All American BBQ, Sam’s Country Store and
many more. Over 60 vendors have reserved space to date and every day’s mail brings in more applications. Expect to
see craft vendors as well as food booths.
Two bands will provide music throughout the day at the stage next to the Beer Tent where both micro brews and hard
cider will be available for purchase by those 21 or older. IDs will be checked. Picnic tables will be available under a tent
as well.
Although there is no entrance fee, organizer Kim O’Brien is hoping to see the donation box overflowing with dollar bills.
All net proceeds from the event will go to the Fleischmanns Pool Fund.
Come one and all and bring the whole family….there’s a kids tent as well!

Halcyon Garden Days of August, 2016
A tribute and thank you goes out to all those who support and contribute the necessary funds in support of the annual
Flower Barrel campaign and to those who volunteer effortlessly for the setup and maintaining and watering though out
the Summer season. It’s a huge on-going effort of coordination and planning to order, plant and sustain the 30 flower
barrels throughout the village. The annual cost is just over a thousand dollars a
season and it is all by donations collected early in the season.
The flower barrels add so much to our local summer landscape along Main Street
and Village Park.
This year we want to thank the following financial contributors: The Tinderbox,
Community Bank, Fleischmanns First and individual donors: Marilyn Ringel, Milt
and Agnes Laub, Muriel Stone, Pam and Carl Grocholl, Peter and Margaret Churuti, Rob Alverson.
Many thanks to Pam Grocholl and Corky Johnson for their constant oversite and
care with the watering, replacing and maintaining the plants.
This year’s helpers with the set up and plantings under the direction of Pam
Grocholl were, Winifred Zubin, Michelle Sidrane, Carol Birnbaum, Yvonne
Reuter, Victoria Quesada, Patty and Rob Warfield, Marilyn Ringel and Rob
Alverson.
Special thanks to the Village and Corky Johnson for barrel storage each year.
Should you wish to help out by making a donation to the fund or help with
watering or garden maintenance, please contract Pam Grocholl or stop by the
Village Clerk’s office. Help is always appreciated during the growing season.
